Just curious what kind of f***wit wouldn't like this even if you don't like music or totally sick guitar playing why would anyone post a dislike? I mean really?
If you like this check out Jeff Healey, he too has passed on to the great jam session in the sky, wow what a talent and a great guy as well!!! R.I.P. Jeff and Danny we all love you guys!
I saw Danny play with the Radiators at the old studio 54 just before he died, I ran out the next day and bought "Crusin Deuces!" Bar NONE the greatest ax man I have ever seen live! And THAT is saying a ton!!!
I share your enthusiasm about Mr Gatton's unquestionably exquisite ability. The adverb "probably" was introduced because of my restricted knowledge and lack of musical experience, which in no way prevented me from being taken aback by this gentleman's astounding gifts.
@steelguitartim Frankly, I never thought of it before, since guitar playing isn't really a competition and there are so many GREAT players out there, but when I read your comment, I thought about it, and when I tried to think of another rockabilly guy who's better than the late great Danny was I couldn't' think of ANYBODY! All I meant to say was that you could probably leave out the "probably"
Yes, we can both agree to the fact that by removing "probably", this reinforces my conviction that I have never in the register of Rockabilly heard the deployment of such unbridled and effortless imagination, perfect timing - no notes wasted. I had never heard anything like it; to the sensitive listener, it is almost like a demonstration from a guitar teacher who never taught, because he wanted to play and earn rightful recognition, which came too late.
Woops, my mistake! It looks as if shall have to shift my attention to Mr Gatton's inheritance, although before being able to play so much as a snippet from this sky-high style, I would need a serious extension to my life expectancy. Nonetheless, thank you very much ideeed for handing on this intelligence. I shall attempt to put it to the best of uses, and I insist upon the verb "to attempt".
@Guitarist2098 "Duane who?" Why would you write such a silly thing? Duane Allman died at age 24, and is considered by most experts to be in the top 5 of all-time guitar greats. In fact, Rolling Stone Magazine rated him as # 2 behind only Hendrix (Gatton was ranked # 63). Danny Gatton was a true legend but he lived to be 49. Don't you think DA would have added to his legacy had he lived another 25 years? Can't we appreciate the greatness that was Danny Gatton without putting DA down? Peace
There's no comparison between Danny & Duane. I first heard Danny play on an old Guitar Player Magazine soundsheet record about 20 years ago. When they rated him the best all round guitarist based on skill and technique. I still have that record somewhere if anyone is interested in hearing it.
ya know, it's things like this that, if i didn't have it on good authority that he was a sincerely sweet and wonderful guy and had absolutely NO idea how good he was, i'd hate his freakin' guts! :)
He figured lots of this out in elementary school. Really, while the rest of the kiddies were watching the Mickey Mouse Club and Howdy Doody he was communing with his Muse.
Not a knock against any guitarist who ever played, but I fail to see how any of them could be considered better or more talented than Danny. Absolutely stunning, jaw dropping, and makes it look so easy.
@Rusfi16: I am one of the biggest Danny Gatton fans around, but he isn't the only inhumanly good guitar player we're blessed to hear... check out Scotty Anderson and Johnny Hiland. Danny definitely had his own thing going on, though; I really miss him and his crazy sense of humor. What a musician he was!
Never seen anytthing like this.... the beer dripping off the neck made me thirsty then playing with a towel to dry it... better than I play without one... I might have to burn my guitar. lol
I'm from Maryland and had the pleasure of meeting Danny at a gig. We sat in his truck and talked one on one for some time before he went on. He absolutely CRUSHED that night! We talked about guitars and he could not have been nicer. God bless you Danny.
@PRECBS I used to hang with Danny a lot in his early days. Most humble person I ever met. A crew of us would go back to his place after gigs and shoot the shit till dawn. Shame I lost touch with him when I moved out of the area in the 80's. Miss ya Danny. RIP my brother.
@Butzopower I've been playing guitar for 38 years and I only found out about Danny Gatton a couple of years ago. But I don't mind because I'm just glad I found him and I can listen to the wickedness of his awesome playing. finally. lol
I loved Danny. I am from Northern Virginia, so I got to see him a few times. I have seen Danny and Big Al from NRBQ play slide like this with a beer bottle. I remember a stoy abouy Danny Gatton challenging Roy Buchanon to cut heads one night in Washington, DC area and Roy decliened. He was scared and Roy could surly plan. But, noy many played like Danny. He si Missed, so is Roy.
thats it ive had it with mainstream music. Danny should have got the recognition he deserved instead of the usual stuff everyones heard of, and this poor guy comitted suicide. thank god for youtube, no wonder TV and radio are flooded with commercials upon commercials they know theyre dealing with "customers" anyway. as if we mind all these stupid fucking Ads shoved down our throats 24/7
My work mate was a big fan and was always trying to get us out to see him live. We were just about to go, when he shot himself. I remember the look on my friends face when I told him about his death. It was like part of him had died.
@terotele If the tab notes are in brown use the bottle, and blue means use the towel. Half the time when I get through with stuff in tableture I wind up playing differently anyway. Gatton and Buchanan use to room together. Imagine that much talent in one place just kicking back jamming. I sure wish they were still alive.
I read somewhere that Buchanan didn't have a driver's license so Gatton would call him from whatever bar he was playing his set in and Buchanan would listen to him over the phone. Funny story, even if it isn't true (though it might be).
I discovered this video clip about 4 years ago...and I've been playing guitar for 15 years. And honestly, I've looked and looked...and I've yet to find anything that's impressed me from a showmanship point of view more so than this performance. Rest in Peace Danny.
I was fortunate enough to see Danny Gatton at the Lone Star. The bit with the foaming beer bottle was entertainingly funny, but it just blew my mind to watch him towel off without missing a note.
ok, the beer bottle act, not bad at all, but not too impressive.. the fucking towel on the other hand.. no damn way to explain how impossible it is to get tone like that with a TOWEL ON YOUR HAND.. god damn thats impressive, too bad he somehow killed himself for some reason.. ah, r.i.p danny the telemaster/humbler gatton.
@dan32113 nobody's 'better' than Duane. Duane did his thing, Danny did his thing, I'm gonna do my thing. Better is not relative to these types of players...

Any guitar player with any experience at all knows that what he makes look so effortless is insanely difficult. Only a true master of the instrument can do so much and make it look like no big deal
@gattonmaster: Hi GM, this is PF. Howyadoing? Lonnie Mack, now there's a fine, fine player and singer. We gotta see him live one of these days... he's getting up in years.

What in Gods name you might pull something not even a quarter as good as this now have the balls to play it in front of a crowd,,,,, This is whats missing from music today we need more showman like Danny.
Watch Gatton at Gallager's on youtube for an encyclopedia of jazz, country, rock, and out-of-the-galaxy licks seamlessly put together for some great music. I've had this and the Gallager video long before youtube and I'm still an old player that is in awe everytime I see them. First time I saw DG was playing behind Roger Miller, who also ha
