  • Phopto,

I remember seeing Roy buchanan at the old Circle Star theater in Redwood City around that time.

  • I think I saw this show at Slims in S.F. I am ever so grateful I got to hear Danny live. Saw Roy Buchanan too in the early 80's.

  • สุดยอด

  • Lol Fender beer too

  • WOW...

  • I wonder what kind of towel he used?

  • @luvzmocha Remember kids use genuine Fender towels for that great tone!

  • @lunsj

    Great comment.

  • @luvzmocha

Does it really matter? Dude could play through a shit filled pair of underwear!

  • Just curious what kind of f***wit wouldn't like this even if you don't like music or totally sick guitar playing why would anyone post a dislike? I mean really?

If you like this check out Jeff Healey, he too has passed on to the great jam session in the sky, wow what a talent and a great guy as well!!! R.I.P. Jeff and Danny we all love you guys!

  • wow i love this

  • That's what they call...

    ...TOWEL N ROLL

  • Amazing

  • Fuckin' amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Damn.

  • he works the guitar so hard it sweats

  • HE IS JUST THAT GOOD ! what a player.

  • This shows how you can f*ck with a towel

  • Danny rocks. He and Roy Buchanan are problably jamming together now in blues paradise

  • I wish I could have a bottle of beer at my job

  • that towels got great tone!

  • I thought the frets went to infinity? It makes me sad when it doesn't go higher.

  • Who wants a nice cold one? Ahhhhhhhhhh

  • Danny's the man!

  • Fuck...Me...Sideways...With a telecaster...

  • I saw Danny play with the Radiators at the old studio 54 just before he died, I ran out the next day and bought "Crusin Deuces!" Bar NONE the greatest ax man I have ever seen live! And THAT is saying a ton!!!

  • the beer jizzed all over that tele

  • Wow!

  • my kinda guy

  • How can anyone copy that..... Incredible

  • The last virtuous, now, brother play your TELECASTER for the DEVIL.

  • His is stunt pilot hammering some death defying tricks.......you in the back seat while he does it. No fear when he had that axe in his had.

  • Probably the best rockabilly guitarist there ever was.

  • @steelguitartim Probably?

  • @JimmyDeLocke

I share your enthusiasm about Mr Gatton's unquestionably exquisite ability. The adverb "probably" was introduced because of my restricted knowledge and lack of musical experience, which in no way prevented me from being taken aback by this gentleman's astounding gifts.

    Respectfully yours,

    Tim.

  • @steelguitartim Frankly, I never thought of it before, since guitar playing isn't really a competition and there are so many GREAT players out there, but when I read your comment, I thought about it, and when I tried to think of another rockabilly guy who's better than the late great Danny was I couldn't' think of ANYBODY! All I meant to say was that you could probably leave out the "probably"

    Respectfully yours,

    JImmy

  • @JimmyDeLocke

Yes, we can both agree to the fact that by removing "probably", this reinforces my conviction that I have never in the register of Rockabilly heard the deployment of such unbridled and effortless imagination, perfect timing - no notes wasted. I had never heard anything like it; to the sensitive listener, it is almost like a demonstration from a guitar teacher who never taught, because he wanted to play and earn rightful recognition, which came too late.

    Respectfully Yours,

    Tim.

  • @steelguitartim Search "Danny Gatton Licks and Tricks" on the tube -- It's a series of lessons he recorded.

Very good close-up and slowed down shots of his right hand as he demonstrates the picking patterns he uses.

    guitaristically yours,

    Jimmy

  • @JimmyDeLocke

Woops, my mistake! It looks as if shall have to shift my attention to Mr Gatton's inheritance, although before being able to play so much as a snippet from this sky-high style, I would need a serious extension to my life expectancy. Nonetheless, thank you very much ideeed for handing on this intelligence. I shall attempt to put it to the best of uses, and I insist upon the verb "to attempt".

    Tim.

  • John Candy sittin' in on keys!

  • Danny, you're one of the best of all time ! I cry since the day where you're gone. WHY ?

  • Kind of genious isn't it ?

  • it puts the beer on the strings! This amazes me every time I watch it

  • danny beats all, but he couldnt capture the audience. too good. too introverted. rip master of all time and space.

  • That slide playing was brilliant!!

  • AWSOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • In a word...WOWWWW!!

  • chaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  • He got beer all over his guitar, and then cleaned it while still playing an amazing solo! BRAVO!!

  • Duane WHO!??!?? DANNY FREAKIN GATTON HOMIES

  • @Guitarist2098 "Duane who?" Why would you write such a silly thing? Duane Allman died at age 24, and is considered by most experts to be in the top 5 of all-time guitar greats. In fact, Rolling Stone Magazine rated him as # 2 behind only Hendrix (Gatton was ranked # 63). Danny Gatton was a true legend but he lived to be 49. Don't you think DA would have added to his legacy had he lived another 25 years? Can't we appreciate the greatness that was Danny Gatton without putting DA down? Peace

  • @luv4allmusik Whilst I don't approve of anybody putting down Duane, I have to say, what the hell do Rolling Stone know about guitar? ;oD

  • There's no comparison between Danny & Duane. I first heard Danny play on an old Guitar Player Magazine soundsheet record about 20 years ago. When they rated him the best all round guitarist based on skill and technique. I still have that record somewhere if anyone is interested in hearing it.

  • nice dish rag harmonics!

  • lol 4 people suck dick and wish that bottle went up their ass.

  • ya know, it's things like this that, if i didn't have it on good authority that he was a sincerely sweet and wonderful guy and had absolutely NO idea how good he was, i'd hate his freakin' guts! :)

  • A telecaster and a bottle of beer

    good times

  • and this is how real man clean up a guitar

  • hey his is verry good hes i som of the best guitar player i know

  • I think that is called 'playing' the guitar...

  • That bottle and that towel should be in a friggin museum.

  • @RIGUSGACA Amen to that, mate.

  • I haven't been drinking, Officer, my Tele has.

  • @xjamesxreedx then why are YOU pissed? :P

  • that guitar is fuckin faded!

  • Why haven't I heard of this guy before?

  • I love how he wipes down the neck and keeps playing with the towel on his hand

  • No! He's getting guitar on the beer! STOP DANNY!!!

    ...Beautiful.

  • Meu Pai curtiu muito esse video no tempo do VHS e eu aindo curto, rsss

  • just me, or does it look like a blue ghost is attacking his guitar at 1:53?

  • DITTO

  • simply GREAT

  • He figured lots of this out in elementary school. Really, while the rest of the kiddies were watching the Mickey Mouse Club and Howdy Doody he was communing with his Muse.

  • Not a knock against any guitarist who ever played, but I fail to see how any of them could be considered better or more talented than Danny. Absolutely stunning, jaw dropping, and makes it look so easy.

  • @Rusfi16: I am one of the biggest Danny Gatton fans around, but he isn't the only inhumanly good guitar player we're blessed to hear... check out Scotty Anderson and Johnny Hiland. Danny definitely had his own thing going on, though; I really miss him and his crazy sense of humor. What a musician he was!

  • Never seen anytthing like this.... the beer dripping off the neck made me thirsty then playing with a towel to dry it... better than I play without one... I might have to burn my guitar. lol

  • In Telecaster Heaven, Danny's runnin' the show.... RIP Danny. You are the best!

  • I'm from Maryland and had the pleasure of meeting Danny at a gig. We sat in his truck and talked one on one for some time before he went on. He absolutely CRUSHED that night! We talked about guitars and he could not have been nicer. God bless you Danny.

  • @PRECBS I used to hang with Danny a lot in his early days. Most humble person I ever met. A crew of us would go back to his place after gigs and shoot the shit till dawn. Shame I lost touch with him when I moved out of the area in the 80's. Miss ya Danny. RIP my brother.

  • WOW

  • I "hate" to watch this. Loose my confidence...

    This is awsome !!!

  • wow! thats awesome

  • Talk about Alcohol Abuse!!

Danny - your beer is leaking all over your Telecaster!

  • well you can keep this...sounds like he is well smashed

  • jesus

  • Why have I not heard of this great player until now?

  • @Butzopower He's dead, Jim!

  • @Butzopower Don't feel bad...a lot of people haven't heard of him yet either!

  • @Butzopower you really must get out more . . .

  • @Butzopower I've been playing guitar for 38 years and I only found out about Danny Gatton a couple of years ago. But I don't mind because I'm just glad I found him and I can listen to the wickedness of his awesome playing. finally. lol

  • lol

  • the personality of beer comes out through this bottle of brew!!

  • I loved Danny. I am from Northern Virginia, so I got to see him a few times. I have seen Danny and Big Al from NRBQ play slide like this with a beer bottle. I remember a stoy abouy Danny Gatton challenging Roy Buchanon to cut heads one night in Washington, DC area and Roy decliened. He was scared and Roy could surly plan. But, noy many played like Danny. He si Missed, so is Roy.

  • Is that George Lucas playing Keyboard?

  • Genio.

  • Comment removed

  • RIP Danny, Hope you've found peace and hapiness eternally.

  • thats it ive had it with mainstream music. Danny should have got the recognition he deserved instead of the usual stuff everyones heard of, and this poor guy comitted suicide. thank god for youtube, no wonder TV and radio are flooded with commercials upon commercials they know theyre dealing with "customers" anyway. as if we mind all these stupid fucking Ads shoved down our throats 24/7

  • He is good but he is no Duane Allman

  • @markjohn35 Yeah, nice one mate. lol.

  • The famous "towel muted" hell yeah!!!!

  • found this video while searching for a slide solo, my life will never be the same.

  • RIP Danny. You left us way too soon.

  • I lived in DC in '70-71 and saw him do all that stuff a bunch of times, and it always blew my away.

  • Very nice...

  • He quotes "Flight of the Bumblebee" at 1:00. Even more awesome.

  • My work mate was a big fan and was always trying to get us out to see him live. We were just about to go, when he shot himself. I remember the look on my friends face when I told him about his death. It was like part of him had died.

  • AMAZING!!

  • when i saw this, i tried it myself and now i've been doing this when i play live ever since. Awsome trick and impresses the crowds too.

  • F#@kin awesome what a player..Peace..jake

  • WHAT??!!?!?!!!

This is the most amazing thing I've ever seen =O

  • Genious.

  • My head was spinning before...now it stopped...

    Great!

  • tab that you motherfuckers

  • @terotele hahahaha...GREAT comment! :)

  • @terotele YEAH BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @terotele If the tab notes are in brown use the bottle, and blue means use the towel. Half the time when I get through with stuff in tableture I wind up playing differently anyway. Gatton and Buchanan use to room together. Imagine that much talent in one place just kicking back jamming. I sure wish they were still alive.

  • @Satchmoeddie talented people always dies first, is god's will...

  • @terotele if god's will is to kill yourself..... -.-

  • @Satchmoeddie

I read somewhere that Buchanan didn't have a driver's license so Gatton would call him from whatever bar he was playing his set in and Buchanan would listen to him over the phone. Funny story, even if it isn't true (though it might be).

  • @terotele BWUAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHA!

    Win

  • And that's why they called him "The Humbler"........

  • i think i saw this at the end of back to the future

  • Well gypsy, I say pull out a beer grab a towell and throw up a video of you rocking out.

Now if you could play as good as Gatton I would believe you woulden't be posting her on the tube.

  • I discovered this video clip about 4 years ago...and I've been playing guitar for 15 years. And honestly, I've looked and looked...and I've yet to find anything that's impressed me from a showmanship point of view more so than this performance. Rest in Peace Danny.

  • oh no! He's getting all that beer on the tele!

  • ONE BAD MO FO! R.I.P.

  • Master of the Telecaster....the Humbler... musical genius Danny Gatton

  • WOW...i'm inspired... wanna learn that...any idea on how long it will take me...lol

  • How in the hell....

  • Yep. Dat's good.

  • effortless genius of the highest order

  • Clapton Hendrix.

  • @RebornGuitarLearner u got it, mate ; )

  • if anybody mentions clapton or hendrix i'll put the towel on their face and pour a piss

  • my tele hero!

  • L E G E N D ! !

  • I love playin' slide cause you can go higher than the frets

  • That was amazing

  • I was fortunate enough to see Danny Gatton at the Lone Star. The bit with the foaming beer bottle was entertainingly funny, but it just blew my mind to watch him towel off without missing a note.

  • I dont know a lot about slide but that is some of the craziest slide playin ive ever seen-thats as high as it goes!:)

  • ok, the beer bottle act, not bad at all, but not too impressive.. the fucking towel on the other hand.. no damn way to explain how impossible it is to get tone like that with a TOWEL ON YOUR HAND.. god damn thats impressive, too bad he somehow killed himself for some reason.. ah, r.i.p danny the telemaster/humbler gatton.

  • that beer bottle must get loads of pussy, what a player! better than Duane Allman

  • @dan32113 nobody's 'better' than Duane. Duane did his thing, Danny did his thing, I'm gonna do my thing. Better is not relative to these types of players...

  • @dan32113: Better than Duane? Nope, just different. Danny had his thing, and Duane had his.

  • @dan32113 I wouldnt say "better than Duane." Duane is a legend, and so is this guy. That is all.

  • That's what I call being influenced by the hitchiker's guide to the galaxey.Never forget your towel;)

  • this should be illegal, what a talent! i"m gobsmacked....

  • TELL HIM I BELIEVE!!!!!!

  • there was a thread on 4chan's /mu/ about this

  • I knew towelie could play guitar!

  • i grew up in DC, close to him in age, used to go see him all the time, actually got bored with it after a while--i know, just shoot me--and truly did not appreciate him at the time, just like everyone else, what a fool i was, AND he had a guitar repair shop in forestville, MD at one time and he used to set up my guitars for me,

  • washed, rinsed, then dried off

  • crazy good player.

  • the best!

  • he's a magician

  • That thing he does at 2:30 makes my head spin...listen to how musical that weird thing he does is

  • @hotrodius Yeah dude, ... let's go quit guitar

  • Danny Gatton was the best guitar player to ever live..

  • Danny is God

  • Danny was, is and always will be the man, wherever he is.

  • Any guitar player with any experience at all knows that what he makes look so effortless is insanely difficult. Only a true master of the instrument can do so much and make it look like no big deal

  • how is that even possible! ha, ha! i thought the towel would kill the notes!

  • chris isack used to say that you could cut three of his fingers and he still be greatest guitarist ever

  • Lonnie Mack and some guy on Guiding Light both referred to Danny as the man with 10 fingers.

  • @gattonmaster: Hi GM, this is PF. Howyadoing? Lonnie Mack, now there's a fine, fine player and singer. We gotta see him live one of these days... he's getting up in years.

  • one of the best vids i have ever seen

  • WHAT THE FUCK, greatness

  • This is absolutely crazy! But I love it! :-)

  • I tried this one night.... I failed big-time... lol This just makes ya laugh and as a player wanna give up because it's so dam crazy.... To Danny Gatton it was effortless. I am betting all the players up in the sky were mad as hell that day.

  • Quite undoubtedly epic. Bought his anthology album, its fantastic.

  • Can't imagine anyone else to do that. Crazy but thats ok.

  • thats some wild shit thats for sure

  • What in Gods name you might pull something not even a quarter as good as this now have the balls to play it in front of a crowd,,,,, This is whats missing from music today we need more showman like Danny.

  • Sol Opi from Hawaii used to do that too I think and then Jeremy from Fleetwood Mac.

  • XOXO

  • He plays the guitar while he cleans the beer off it. I'm through lol AWESOME!

  • God Bless Danny

  • Watch Gatton at Gallager's on youtube for an encyclopedia of jazz, country, rock, and out-of-the-galaxy licks seamlessly put together for some great music. I've had this and the Gallager video long before youtube and I'm still an old player that is in awe everytime I see them. First time I saw DG was playing behind Roger Miller, who also ha
