Unbelievable!!!! I beat all the Ghouls and Ghost series in the arcade (and home console too!), and I thought NES version is just human impossible, let alone do it with no death. The problem was that red gargoyle. I could easily kill it using any weapon in the arcade (just need to get close) , but NES version he's just way too fast!! As a diehard fan of GG series, I can finally rest in peace =)
Who among you players back in the day found out solely (as I did) that secret where you can get the key while in the ladder, then the character would go past the door and walk in that lost world?
@1200com u can do that in level 4 and 5. And if i am not wrong if u do it in level 4 and wait 4 at least 30 min arthur will find the door and get to the next level. i remember doing so as a kid

Played this game at an A-kon gaming zone. I gottta say that this was a difficult game to master. Took me 2 hours to get the timing all down just for the 1st stage. And yeh red imps were the worst....3 hits! xD
Wow man, very nice. I just recently played this game again and it took me an entire day with an emulator (on my homebrewed Wii) just to get to the 2nd go around (it takes you 11 minutes... lol). What was up at 2:30 (why did you stand there and jump and get hit?)
@Modokun the dissapearing is a common nes fault from too much things on the screen for the nes to compute, so it compensates by reducing the pixels on the enemies and other stuff like that. A good example is in Mega Man 3 in that stage with the hardhat bulldozer things that are really tall, two of those on the screen and they will flicker.
Just started playing this again for the first time in about 20 years. Previously I couldn't even get past level 2. Now level five is where my game ends. How finishing this game in under 22 minutes is possible is beyond me. Awesome effort. Ghosts N Goblins: Hardest game ever.

Anyway, I thank you heartily for this video for helping me figure out how exactly to get past that stupid red demon just before the two vamps at the end of Stage 6. Now I'm more than halfway through the second playthrough (no cheats or savesates of course). I also laughed pretty hard when that burrito ghost screwed you out of the dagger you miraculously found mid-speedrun.
@kareshi did you ever have to restart the whole game because of the instant death-glitch at the end of level 3? If I ever wanted to quit playing Gng it was by the time I finally survived all of the arremers, approached the level boss in fear and excitement combined, and got killed by... NOTHING, or so it seemed... Might have been the dragon that flickers around the edge of the screen before I even reached it. Terribly annoying however...
that is really impresive i have about 600 nes games and ghost and goblins is my favourite but my console is broken and i cost me alot to buy in the first place nice video :)
Absurdly difficult game. Funny to think that many of the difficult games (e.g., Rush'n Attack, Ghouls n Ghosts, etc.) could be beaten more easily by ignoring most enemies and just running like mad. I'm off to see whether a speedrun exists for my all-time hated game, Kid Icarus...

This version is so much better than the arcade. The big red guys are at least killable with the shield. It takes a lot of practice but in the arcade getting through level 6 is all luck.
good run but I do feel this is a really flawed game with level design that just consists of paths filled with tons of enemies that have very erratic patterns...having to play through it twice is dumb too, it should have just had more levels. it's not like these levels are all that complex, and they could have thrown in 3 or 4 more. that goes for the sequels to this game too. this is an early nes game sure, but super mario didn't rely on this bullcrap.

@Modokun That because of the sprite limitations on the NES. The console could only have a set amount of sprites displayed at a time.
