  • love that horse, can watch it over and over, sends chills, what a horse!!!!

  • get a new announcer!

  • i dont have to watch the overview to truly respect Mine That Bird. that race gets me evertime:)

  • ride the rail

  • This definitely should have been the NTRA moment of the year!

  • i remember the whole talk about mind that bird over here in el paso and in new mexico because we were so happy a horse from our neck of the woods was going to be in the KENTUCKY DERBY! then when he won i was in shock everyone couldnt believe it. even though mind that bird didnt win the preakness or belmont he is still a great little horse.

  • mine that bird was awesome. had a ton of heart

  • BUDDYSMOTH1015 is a little loser douche

  • I Still Think The Best Horse Didn;t Win

I Think Pioneerof The Nile Was

he Was Up There With That Quick Pace , Not Allowing Him to Get Many Breathers

And Not Allowing Him To kick On Again ,

  • anyone that knows alot about racing? do you think borell was keeping this horse on the driest part of the track, against the rail, knowing the other horses would fade running in the slop/ He said after the race that the other horses just quit, maybe they were worn out running in the slop?

  • the horse is a mudder dumbass.

  • how often do you love boys? maybe 25 times a week, i will look for you on the sex offenders list, dont go to prison if you want to keep what manhood you have !

  • it;s called making fun of people like I am doing to you. Be SMART

  • Dope ?

  • yeah stop smoking it asshole

  • for obvious razon this race has to be call it or nominate a THE BEST RACE IN HISTORY DON'T YOU???????

  • thats a hell of a horse and one of the worlds smartest and greatest jockeys

  • I love this video with the comments! Never get tired of watching this race. It is the best one I've ever seen.

  • This is one of the BEST videos of the Kentucky Derby!! I love technical analysis and overhead shots. MTB is one in a million!!! What a crazy horse with an incredible heart!!!

    Thank you for this!!!

  • Did you all hear Bo-Rail actually made contact with the rail! He had paint left on his boot! And, during a recent workout at Churchill, he made contact AGAIN in the same spot as Derby day - INCREDIBLE!

  • Might be the strangest Kentucky Derby of all time: Not only did a fifty-to-one longshot win, but not a single "favorite" finished in the money; in fact, none of them even came close. Whew! And consider this: Those horses that looked like they were running in quicksand at the end weren't some rinky dink animals- they were the best horses in the world.....

  • Actually, "Pioneer of the Nile" WAS one of the favorites, and Pioneer of the Nile was IN THE MONEY, placing 2nd. Even Gary Stevens was quoted to say that he thought Pioneer of the Nile would win the Derby.

  • But looking back at MTB's record in Canada, it shouldn't come as a surprise. MTB had won all his (4 of 4) races in Canada as a 2 yr old. Perhaps he just needed some time to adjust to his new environment. He was running on synthetics up there in Canada, and he went from being 1st to 12th when he switched owners mid October 2008.

  • It was reported he ran the last 3/8 of a mile of the kentucky derby 2nd fastest of all time.Second only to the one and only Secretariat, so just knowing that should of told the people who said he was fluke that he wasnt and that in fact he is for real and in the preakness even though he didnt win he was charging like a freight train from last place again 18 lengths behind all the way to the heels of that awesome filly RA..

  • Wow, great comment!

  • This is the greatest video of that horse. The overhead really does him justice

  • Thanks!

  • best win ever!!!!

  • Smith wasn't bad at all, but still wonder if Borel had been on top if MtB would have won Preakness.

  • IMO the jockey would not have made a difference, unless of course Borel could have magically parted the horses like Moses did the Red Sea. Borel had good fortune on his side, Smith didn't have the same ideal path to glory.

I agree with you about there being a concerted effort to impede MTB's progress by the other jockeys. He probably ran 1 1/4 mi. on a 1 3/16 mi. track when you take all the zig-zagging he had to do into account, and still had kick left in the tank at the finish line.

  • i LOVE THIS HORSE. I was at the KEENLAND watching this and this is a great horse. Clearly it would have won the preakness if it just got little bit way inside to move. All the horses were blocking. But, I felt sad that Calvin Borel ditched that horse to go for Racheal. Still Smith did a great job.

  • Well it was obviously no fluke, as this horse was clearly the best in the field at the Preakness too. This time however it was boxed in a bit too much and couldn't quite get there. Another 1/16 mi. and he clearly would have overtaken R.A., despite having to zig-zag his way up there through traffic.

That Filly is a sprinter, but the Belmont is more like a marathon. MTB should be the clear-cut favorite. R.A. will lead for 1 1/4 mi. or so then fade fast and end up near the rear.

  • There definitely was an awareness of MtB's great speed, and there certainly was an concerted effort to shut him out.

  • The only thing the announcer said about MtB before he took the lead was "Well behind the rest of them is Mine that Bird" at 1:02. LOL! At 1:57 the announcer hesitates w/a WTF kinda, "uh." He was trying to figure out who the hell just came thru to take the lead. MtB was already several lengths ahead of the rest when he finally spit out his name.

I can't get enough of this. Even w/your wonderful graphics, it's STILL hard to follow such a fast horse. Thanks very much for posting.

  • What a great comment -- you are exactly right! Thank you for the compliment. It definitely is really hard to track MtB through all the traffic -- killer speed. You really have to see the overhead view.

  • Obviously, only Secretariat has run a faster final half-mile here.

Awesome race by Mine That Bird.

  • Yeah, Secretariat was amazing. I really would like to have seen Man O'War, War Admiral, and SB run without the extreme weights they were hc with.

  • Thanks,

This is truly historic footage and great commentary!

  • I LOVE the announcer! Man, he sure makes you want to cheer!

  • The announcer does make it exciting . . . he definitely has a great voice. He just totally blew the call -- can't say I would have been any better, MtB was a huge long-shot, the announcer wasn't looking for him, and his move from last to first was very sudden.

  • Things like this are truly uplifting - reaffirming why I know this game is far better than any other spectator sport. Basketball and baseball players cannot possibly be considered as pros, compared to this.

  • This is the best video replay to watch . . . you are spot-on with the text comments in the video. Still don't know how a horse can pass horses like they are standing still like this -- truly amazing and inspiring.

  • Yes the 9-10 minute video officially posted is painful to watch. Glad you liked the commentary.

  • Just a note to say "Thanks for posting." I was at the Downs that day and wasn't able to see the aerial camera shot. It was indeed amazing and a race that will live forever in Derby lore. Thanks again. Just terrific!!!

  • You're welcome -- glad you were able to be at the Derby; hope you have some memento of the occasion, it will definitely go down as one the greatest races over run.

  • I've been looking for this angle. If you don't see it this way it's impossible to understand how this horse did it, especially because the announcer totally blew the call. Still hard to believe. Thanks for posting.

  • Thanks for the comment -- the announcer just had no clue that "Mine that Bird" was moving up the through the pack like rocket.

  • Thanks! When watching the race I don't remember seeing "Mine That Bird" during the race until he took the lead -- and TV guy calling the race missed him too. I had to go back and watch on video to see just how suddenly he jetted from last to first. You have to see the overhead replay to really appreciate it. I haven't witnessed such a great combination of very good jockeying on top of a horse with amazing heart in a long, long time.

  • Amazing video! Thank you for posting. From near Saratoga Race Track, NY, I am a betting clerk that was working a window at the derby. I have a pet bird and always bet "bird" horses. Yes, I won some good money on this beautiful horse. I didn't get a great look at the race so I really appreciate this video!

  • wow thats cool. Save your stub or whatever you have. part of history.

  • Hope you won a bucket of money -- defintiely save your stub -- appreciate your comments!

  • i did not watch it live, for i was at school, but when i saw the over head shot, it inspired me, i find so much enjoyment when under dogs pull it off,

we had another inspiring performance not long ago with Susan Boyle, and now this,

    remarkable!!!!!

truly remarkable, it will stand the test of time indeed

  • i can only imagine that burst of adrenaline
