so he takes lessons for jazz at 4 but doesnt show a bit of jazz technique he just plays 4 counts and nods his head alot and wears cool bandanas and makes his kit unique and makes music with rappers the day travis puts money aside and makes a jazz influenced album ill give him the respect until then hes showed me nothing except excessive speed and basic rock counts to let you know questlove will destroy travis and im not even a fan of questlove but i know where he stands in the drumming world
they are different style drummers, there is no real way to say who is better. and in drumming, the person who is better, is who can keep beat while still doing the most amount of shit. he doesn't have to make a jazz influenced album. he does what he likes, and for you to say he isn't good cuz he doesn't play jazz drums, is fucking dumb. each genre has best things in it. jazz and blues has bass, ska/punk/pop, has vocals, and rock/metal has the guitar. drums are pretty universal.
The best drummer is not the person "who can keep the beat while still doing the most amount of shit." If anything I prefer working with musicians that know when not to play and don't clutter the song with too many notes. I do agree with you on the artist should play what he or she enjoys and shouldn't be judged for it though.
These 2 men have some SERIOUS talent. Makes me wish I had learned an instrument of some sort. Would love to see these 2 men go head 2 head on some type of MTV special or something.
Wanna see some real drumming? Check Art Blakey or Tony Williams on this site. These cats have finesse AND can bang too. Travis and Quest can bang, but their skills don't come close.
