It's fairly common knowledge that when programs face cuts, Fine Arts programs are often the first to suffer. How would even more emphasis on the Science and Math-related disciplines assist in making Canada a world arts centre? How would it be possible to improve those programs without it being at the expense of the Arts?

i think sharia is as reasonable a starting point in the formation of a fluid modern legal tradition as english common law or the napoleonic code. Obviously, it isn't up to the task of dealing with modren problems in its raw form but, as you said, Rome wasn't built in a day. Where did this come from?

In order for this extrapolation of sharia into a useful form to occure, its invasive emphasis on personal matters (including sexuality) must be shed. As it stands, many of the most retrograde aspects are cloaked in superfine legal distinctions- for instance, adultery is not punishable unless the penetration is witnessed by three other people. this is counter productive

I stand by all of my rhetorical decisions, thank you very much. My point (for those of you in need of a man-child friendly gloss) was that the most islamic proscriptions of sharia are no longer consistent with the mores of muslim societies, if, indeed, they ever were. Legal evasions such as the one already described are very very common...it would save a lot of energy to streamline the code, and make it more forthright.

thanks, octavian, I found your video refreshing. And I agree that many of the ideas inherited through sharia law have no place in the 21st century. I resent the hands off approach assumed by many 20 something liberals, and consider it to be just another face of eurocentrism- it's easy to wash your hands of something if its not your freedoms that are in question.
