There were 2 types of tournaments. Nationals and Internationals. Justin won the US Nationals against Mike Ross to represent the US, but for this International one with the champions of Japan, Korea, and US, Daigo won it all. Funny thing is he was kind of a guest and not a champion.
Pretty much, yeah. Some say he's a level above top players. I consider him to be the best even though his combo list isn't as crazy as Poongko's, or that he can lose to a lot of Japanese players like Mago. I wish I can get trained by him, though.

The first Street Fighter game was released in 1987. Street Fighter II was released in 1991. Art of Fighting was releasing in 1992. I was at the event, they were limited to the first 16 characters. Justin had to go through the whole american tournament and fight the Korean and Japanese champ, which he won all. Although he lost to daigo, he had a really intense night. For those who think Japan is still outclassing US, Justin represented well.

Admittedly SF4 is the most well balanced of the SF's but if you're really into studying the metagame of SF you'll know it wasn't wise to go with Rufus in this match. I presume Wong did so only because he felt most comfortable with him. But look at his other match with Daigo where he used top tier Chun-Li in SFIII, actually put up a fight in that one didn't he? Yeah, wonder why....
AceFondu: Justin had already beaten a top-class Ryu with Rufus (Poongko). I think he did the US proud, but with Iyo AND Daigo at this event I think that whatever character Justin had gone for, Japan's class would have shown through.

You're probably right, chances are any character he picked would have lost to Daigo. But I still think he'd have fared better with another character. And I'm all for breaking down the walls of the metagame but normally you just can't. Also, Poongko almost beat Justin. Judging by their skill level he would have either been crushed by Justin with a "Sagat" level character, or Poongko was just flat out confused by Rufus (which happens if they don't understand the match-up well enough).

Daigo is a monster though. They don't call him "The Beast" for nothing. He reads people like no other, and has been playing just as long as Justin has, if not longer. They are both good players, however Daigo got the better of him this time.
Face it, against American players, he can afford to be aggressive and triangle jump his way without being punished. But against some of the highest quality players, he's forced to take that aggressive Rufus and turn it back into a defensive standpoint. We saw in the tourney that offensive and aggressive doesn't work in international play, because someone with reflexes can pull off amazing punishers.

Anyone got any vids of Justin actually using Sagat? I think it's great he's using Rufus and making a new character so popular (check out the "raised hands" Ultra salute from the crowd)

You're probably right, chances are any character he picked would have lost to Daigo. But I still think he'd have fared better with another character. And I'm all for breaking down the walls of the metagame but normally you just can't. Also, Poongko almost beat Justin. Judging by their skill level he would have either been crushed by Justin with a "Sagat" level character, or Poongko was just flat out confused by Rufus (which happens if they don't understand the match-up well enough).

Daigo is a monster though. They don't call him "The Beast" for nothing. He reads people like no other, and has been playing just as long as Justin has, if not longer. They are both good players, however Daigo got the better of him this time.

Face it, against American players, he can afford to be aggressive and triangle jump his way without being punished. But against some of the highest quality players, he's forced to take that aggressive Rufus and turn it back into a defensive standpoint. We saw in the tourney that offensive and aggressive doesn't work in international play, because someone with reflexes can pull off amazing punishers.
I wanna see him play with a Chun internationally.

His emotionless face pisses you off because he is a person with immense concentration. And you feel deep down inside, you couldn't be that way in a major tourney. That's whats fueling ur "Who the hell does he think he is!?" attitude towards someone like him. But everyone feels pressure in a big tourney. Some people choose to ignore or surpress it (Daigo) and others embrace it and sharpen their senses during a match.

I'd like him more if he showed a little bit of emotion when he won. He can be clutch and sh*t while playing, but when he wins the finals, he should celebrate a little.

But on a serious note, that was a good match. I like to play as Rufus too, and I will say that projectile users give me the hardest time because they will always control the pace of the match.
