  • Hes the only artist that can wear sweatpants, and play his ass off, and hear no critisism. #swag

  • he should've stayed with this look

  • LOVE THIS SONG......\m/(~_~)\m/

  • i bet Bruce Willis wasn't expecting such a great performance :)

  • @nugentkj ....Dave Matthews can't even...you know what never mind, i'll let someone else take this.

  • @KickerNumba2 agreed

  • @KickerNumba2 take what exactly?

He's influenced by Matthews... and Tim Reynolds...

You can hear it in his earlier work, he even says Dave Matthews is one of his idols...

And he should be, Matthews is a genius. And so is Mayer, of course...

  • @KickerNumba2 The first show which John Mayer has ever been was a Dave Matthews one, at Jones Beach. Dave is a great musician, listen to "You and me" and then listen to JM, he influenced john

  • this song is still awesome

  • Is this his first time on letterman?

  • this dude is straight up MY hero not yours

  • oh john how much you have changed. i miss this john

  • Definitely influenced by Dave Matthews

  • @nugentkj where did that idea came from ?

  • Why is bruce willis the one to shake John's hand at the end?

  • @RaptorJesus720 i think they're the cutest faces lol

  • His guitar is a Martin OM-42 a gem.

  • Is he drunk? He moves and sings like he is hammered.

  • great song..

  • OMG GREATEST SONG EVER

  • Lots of improvement from then to now. I mean, regardless hes an amazing musician but theres some off vocal parts in this but latley he is FLAWLESS live.

  • @DakotaY12 I believe its an OM sized body

  • Hi everyone! I just started my music career. Check out my life performance of this song if you are interested and leave a comment of tips and pointers.

    Search: Justin Huffman Georgia

starts at 6:50 if you don't want to listen to my eagles cover and my original, Holiday Babe. Thanks so much!!!

  • Watch my videos for John Mayer covers!! :)

  • 13 ppl don't appreciate how good a guitar player he is. Kinda like a gay version of stevie ray vaughn but still an awesome guitar player either way.

  • @knuckleballer187 I wouldn't call him a gay version of SRV. He's a good singer and musician that happens to have a large female following. Stevie was a lot more raw than Mayer. I like them both, as they're both different styles for different moods.

  • @PettyPettyWoodChuck Bruce Willis is a big music fan, I think he plays in a jazz band actually so I'm not surprised that he would dig JM's stuff.

  • when you look at him, you just cant help but smiling. i can't stop.

  • Comment removed

  • so gorgous!t :'(

  • omg, he so wanted to be dave matthews at this stage!? the clothes, the acoustic band leader etc .

  • wtf is that paul shaffer on the keys?

  • @gozertje567 well it IS david letterman...........

  • Add a little lust to the funky ass John Mayer

  • wow... shit sound this time

  • This side of john mayer is long lost and gone.

  • @titihen what side?

  • @titihen

maybe, but i'm still grateful for him to lose the baggy trackies, but yeah you are right.

  • @titihen so true

  • @titihen ?? no

  • @titihen i won't like it, cause i don't like it

  • John Mayer = the best concert EVER

  • the drums sounds like someone's beat boxing

  • Great video. I really love John Mayer. Seen him twice about to be 3 times. BUT....does anyone wanna explain why Bruce Willis was hosting the Late Show? lol. Willis: "Great job man" Mayer: "Hey than..you're not Dave!"

  • anybody notice this is not his signature guitar but an om 42

  • I think he owns over 50 different martins he owns him self and has over 200 different jm martin signature guitars out in for sale

  • @GravityBlues92 I'm pretty sure this vid is a few years old and he didn't have his sig model yet.

  • Respect for a guitarist and a song writer but as for the voice i gotta be that guy...

  • wut u mean

  • In my opinion i think his singing is lower than whale snot.. But music is out there for interpretation and im glad people enjoy his music.

  • Baggy trousers!

  • Def not his band - you could tell even if you couldn't that they were Letterman's...his guitar is turned up so loud you can barely hear them.....the young Mayer...before his life of superstardom

  • He does make some pretty ugly faces. He would be cooler if he didn't try so hard to be so panty dropping with his breathy ass vocals etc.

  • maybe hes not trying like you suggest.maybe thats just how he sings, ever wonder why christina aguillera, mariah carey etc throw their hands around when they sing, the higher the note the higher their hands go. i bet they do that without any thought either

  • I agree with you his singing is sooo breathy. I would probably enjoy him more if he sang with his pure voice. But that breathy sound is part of the john mayer package lol

  • @oarcrazy2802 he used to sing like this it's easier to sing in key for some people..now he's more comfortable with his voice and he doesn't sing like that at all now

  • @dougsusername I would be interested in hearing it. I also understand where your coming from with the "staying in key".

  • i rated 5 stars for his ridiculous facial expressions. gotta love John Mayer

  • He's chill man. love it!

  • John Mayer is so talented. He has such a great voice and is a great guitarist.

  • good but the backup singing is horrible

  • dude if bruce willis loved this then i loved it even more than i did before :)

  • So weird to hear him singing the bridge @ 2:45

It sounds amazing but so rare to see it happen!

  • are those nike's hes wearing?

  • He's incredi...no...he's amazin...no...someone help with me with a good superlative for him. I can't think of anything good enough for him.

  • i think either god or genius, try godlike genius and that works.. i think...

  • amazing performance.. i definitely have a crush on john mayer!!

  • This Dude is straight up my HERO

  • @jesusRules4eva

    no its's my hero!

    i don't share xD

  • and awesome musicianship from John and Paul's band!! these people are playing with soul!! i can feel it!! dayumm

  • John's and Felicia's acoustic guitars harmonizing is killing me! so beautiful!!

  • love the tone of his guitar

  • where the hell did bruce willis come from??!?!

  • It was when Dave went in for his bypass surgery I think. Bruce hosted as a sub.

  • oh i see, didnt know that, thx mate

  • Oh I take that back, after thinking about it. Letterman has his bypass way before this performance. It was one of the other times he was out sick... maybe the time he had shingles in his eye, or maybe he was just on vacation. He did use guest hosts for a while.

  • lol at the end "Woah, fucking great job man."

  • it looks like hes hihg as fuck

  • sub par performance.....and appearance

but considering he looks hung over and like he just rolled out of bed, he's still awesome

  • he probably looks like this because, IIRC, this was a stop in the middle of his tour promoting his album, Room for Squares, and him and his band were touring around in a ford van...it's on the Room for Squares DVD

  • i wanna be him when i grow up lol

  • You can start by making retarded faces as you sing! :P

  • hey he sounds great when hes singing :)

  • Oh no doubt, he's written some real gems. It's just the silly faces he makes...looks like Jim Carrey in agony.

  • haha soooo true

  • @RaptorJesus720 You are totally right !!!! Jim Carrey in agony, PERFECT ahahah

  • @RaptorJesus720 can't argue with you there! However, if you've ever played live it is amazing what you like when you see yourself filmed! :-)

  • @RaptorJesus720 it's called epic face LOL

  • love john!

  • Nice pants...

  • lol

  • I see an Erection in his pants !

  • He is sooo good looking here!

  • I still love him. I love his ability to perform he's so fun to watch

  • his face looks funny

  • Nah. Still think the best performance of this is on Where The Light Is.

  • no way the AGT of this shits all over the WTLI version. Its too refined and clean or something in the WTLI version. I know that sounds silly but i actually like the old band better for his older songs.

  • you're right. sounds silly ;)

  • Bruce WIllis????

  • thought the ssame... it was he right?

  • John's great. Letterman is a sarcastic smart-ass prick.

  • Classi John

  • simply amazing,and adorable

  • The guy doing the higher harmonies in the chorus needs to be shot. I've seen way better performances of this, still good tho! Great artist

  • He looks nervous.

  • I wish I looked that good when I'm nervous;-)

  • John is great whatever any body comments on him .......

  • LASSEboy

    ummmmm...

I hate to break it to you, but you don't need a comma in your sentence.

...being a little hypocritical are we now?

  • If you think all jazz is simple.. you're a fucking moron who has never played it.

  • His face goes so funny on the high notes xD xD

Simply Beautifull though :) I'm not dissing... Just makes me rofl :)

  • Actually...if you dont like John Mayer...then dont even bother clicking on this video..because its clearly John Mayer. Go back under your bridges you trolls.

  • Honestly, why are you guys commenting? All of you are being immature and distasteful, with the exception of two or three of you that are actually commenting on John Mayer's music and not busy insulting other people with lame and overused insults. As for me, I'm gonna sit back, listen to some great music, and maybe sing along. Grow up.

    Peace out...

  • P.S. Most of you are grammatically incorrect, and need to learn how to spell most words in the English language.

  • Guys, if you don't think John Mayer is a good guitar player, watch him jam with the CBS orchestra on Letterman.

  • back when i was a noob playing jazz i thought the exact same thing but then i began to realize that for it to be simple doesn't mean its bad. There are plenty of facets this music that you can enjoy and think about not so simply. what music do you listen to? you are obviously still in the noob stages.

  • we're not talking about the damn guitar playing, just the shit composition and wankey lyrics, the tried and raped and bored structure, shit music for bored mothers and uninteresting blond celebrity gazers. glad you could make the assumption of me being a 'noob' on the sole basis of my comment. you are an epic failure, but if you want you can win this time. ... oh and jazz? please thats the first thing any wannabe hipster sheep retard would say.

  • you obviously didn't realize my comment. i did not say anything about his guitar playing. and in any case, haha, whats wrong with a couple hot chicks who want to suck your dick for playing the guitar? haha? and what the fuck means the wannabe hipster sheep retard who likes jazz? are you saying jazz is simple? beause if so you cannot win anything because you are a complete retard. if jazz is simple what is not?

  • i assumed you were talking about his guitar playing as thats the only thing worth talking about in this terrible song. he has a nice lick at the beginning, then it just turns into BILLBOARDS TOP 100 PIECES OF GARBAGE. jazz is simple as hell, damn, its based on the listeners co-operation and repetition of melody structures, its beefed up pop music. I like jazz if its done an interesting way or is by someone like Coltraine, Monk or Davis or Pastorious. Americans like this music because its safe.

  • uuhhh..... and who else would i be talking about? jazz music is NOT pop music beefed up. Jazz music is classical music and blues beefed up. Where else to you get 2 -5's? if you want to find intricacy in jazz look at blues in the abstract truth by oliver nelson. what do you mean based on listeners co-operation? that really doesn't make much sense. sand there isn't any repitition, thats why theres IMPROVISING. and listen to cats like Kenny Garret art Pepper and Lee Konitzt. Thas some good shit

  • you don't know music, it's better for you if you just don't talk about it.

  • (in response to the failure lukeashmoore)

  • Well spoken you John Mayer loving dickfart . Peace out listening to shit music.

  • if you don't like it don't watch it simple as that.

  • well aren't you just a ol' bucket of sunshine

  • i never said i am a john mayer fan. i just said you don't know music, which you don't. so what's your point again?

  • i dont know music? thats the fucking dumbest accusation ever. you think you know music as if its some guy who delivers mail to you.

  • woah woah jazz is simple u stupid fuck think before u fucking talk man

go and search grant geissman, wes montgomerry, pat metheny or john scofield

and if you no so much about the freaking guitar why the fuck arent u on letterman right now showin up john mayer

  • Jazz is simple, your either born with the feel for it. or you say: ''woah woah jazz is simple? u stupid fuck think before u fucking talk man

go and search grant geissman, wes montgomerry, pat metheny or john scofield'' and are a retarded simpleton with anger issues.

  • oh and why arent i up there? because im too busy writing better songs that playing shit ones on a shit american show.

  • shut the fuck up

  • how about i keep talking and you can go back and listen to fucking snow patrol and celine dion.

  • best comment ever

  • far out John's guitar looks so fucking good in this perofrmance!

  • I would imagine that "where the light is" was mastered and EQ'd for DVD distribution, where as this is probably in more of a "raw" form. Regardless.... Mayer is still my idol.

  • His voice is not as warmed up as it could be. A shame, but otherwise a great song indeed.

  • Yeah its really breathy. But pretty good performance

  • The backup singer was a bit fuzzy

  • Word Dawg!!

  • i love the sound on that drum kit

  • .... was that bruce willis?

  • yeah, when dave had his heart sugery a bunch of different celebrities filled in while he was gone.

  • interesting to see where the light is, the differences are big in this performance

  • this kid can fuckin rock.

  • Down with paul!

  • letterman's band is amazing...they nailed it...great feel...no music in front of them/prob one rehearsal in the afternoon/should take the band on the road

  • i agree..Paul's band is amazing!! the lady on the 2nd acoustic guitar and the bassist killed it along with Mayer of course..Mayer is dope himself!

  • the girl on the second acoustic?? she was backup acoustic to john, with her volume turned down to 2 probably.. I couldn't hear her anywhere in the song

  • yes probably her volume was turned down..shes playing the same chords as John most of the time..so its kinda hard to hear her..but she can really play various instruments..multi talented

  • Her name's Felicia Collins and she is a talented guitarist, in her own right. She was holding back to let JM shine.

  • Mayer is a music god..bu that was prolly the worst performance of him ive ever seem. But it was still okay.

  • i don't think it was bad at all...and i've seen him in concert like 7 times...it's not the best performance, i've def seen worse

  • its crazy how much his vocals have come around...id like to know what he changed.

  • yeah even though he's good here his new stuff is far better

  • He can't, though. There's an innocence to his music here that he can't, for better or for worse, reclaim. The John Mayer now is weatherbeaten by fame, touring, and age. I have high hopes that he will, in his next record, emerge with the stunning technical prowess we've seen lately AND his ever-enlightening insight.

  • That's a great point. I certainly wish for his next album he would go back to his roots so to speak, come back with some older stuff like this.

I do know that alot of critics panned him as being some poppy guy and discredited his first bubble gum pop. Clearly it was not, but I do know that John felt the need as if he had to prove something to them. Which is why he has continually gone further and further away from the sound of his first album.

  • yes, well said.

  • All musicians change over time. The more time you spend with your instrument (for John Mayer, thats years and years and years of touring/being pressured to write new songs/learning new things from more experienced musicians), the more your sound changes. I'm hella proud of John, haha.

  • I do enjoy John's transformation as an artist however I sometimes wish he would take a step back into the prespective he wrote from during this stage in his career.

  • JM is skilled. Really. I've seen comments about him being a bad musician and song writer. Did u listen to the rhythm of the song, as a musicain myself, hes good. Overall a great lead player and an excellent rhythm player. He has a lot of soul in his playing. As for song writing, he writes about his life. He aint like clapton cuz he has a diff life. Hes true to what he writes. He writes about whats happening around him and not some fiction that never happened like being opressed

  • and hes is bbeing said to be together with john fruscicante and derek truck the greatest guitar player wich you very much can see on the where the light is Dvd

  • he will be better when he matures

  • i think he's done maturing, john mayer is already friggin good

  • Please dont get mad at me ,but this reminds me of jim carey doing an impression.I do wish I could play and sing as well as he can.

  • I wish I could play and sing as well as Jim Carrey too...

It's a very good analogy, because an impression is exactly what it is.

    It is also a disappointment.

  • From what we have read about Amy, at least...but that is the cost of true artistry, of being the 'real thing'. Picasso was a real prick. Judy Garland was bonkers. Leonardo Da Vinci used to throw cherry bombs in church's outhouses. Jasper Johns used to go into people's homes and completely unroll all their papertowels and toilet paper, then giggle. True creativity has it's side effects, and it ain't often pretty.

  • Musician & passion. I don't intend an attack on JM, it's more commentary. Maybe JM could write about the emotionally wrenching trauma of having his cable/internet service go out in addition to writing about broken hearts. I know: send him to sing about his broken heart to the troops overseas; grunts coming in from seeing people blown to pieces - broken hearts, broken skulls, twisted brains, etc.

But you could send Amy Winehouse.... see my point?

  • amy winehouse is a poor excuse for a person

  • the best musician made

  • i love john mayer so much, but im not gay
