@gabs2502 - TIMBUKTU was a revival (& revised version) of KISMET. The score was by Robert Forrest & George Wright, adapted from the music of Alexander Borodin. The music was still in print the last time I checked. Just search for it under the title KISMET, by Forrest & Wright. However, this arrangement is quite different from the one you'll hear on the original cast recording of KISMET with Richard Kiley in the role of the Caliph. Alfred Drake was the star of the original production.
I was there. In August 1978. That was when I was attending the University of New Haven as a music major. It was an awesome play. It was the night I also ran into Bernadette Stanis . She was FINE!!!!...took my breathe away. I had an opportunity to go on stage after and speak with Melba Moore. She was very gracious.
As a friend of Bruce Hubbard (and companion of Gilbert Price for some 25 years), I can say without hesitation that the voice is definitely that of Gilbert Price, who was not absent in any performance. True, Hubbard was his understudy and there was a definite difference in their timbres. It's not clear ahy "aeichler" would make the undocumented statement.
Wow I remember one of the performers dressed in some kind of beaded costume and I reached out and touched him. I was just a kid but I was awe struck just the same. ONly a handful of B'way plays can match what this play did.
May I tell Persebra something. When you saw Timbuktu! at the Fisher, the prince was played by the late Bruce Hubbard, another brilliant singer. It also starred Vanessa Shaw and Gregg Baker who is now an international opera star. If you saw "Margaret Garner" at MOT, it was Gregg who played Robert Gardner. But Gilbert Price remains the most glorious voice I've EVER heard. And I've heard them all over the world..
my family had wonderful seats when this show came to detroit, ( it was a huge smash hit here in detroit)i was seating at the end of the aisle. when the prince and his entourage came off the stage down to thru the theather aisle, i had such a huge smile on my face, the prince bowed to me and the audience clapped!
i have been heartbroken that not even a broadway album came out for the show, it was like the whole thing was a mirage until i found your clips, thanks so much!
can anyone help me find the sheet music for this piece x
