Dc doesn't know how to handle minority characters? Mr terrific, Static Sock, black lightning, cyborg! and if you have watched every episode of young justice you know aqualad is a bad ass he's the leader and not like Aquaman doesn't need water around to fight because he uses magic i believe so he's not so much of a wuss! ! RIP Dwayne McDuffie founder of Milestone Comics
I get queezy hearing him call Aquaman "my King." They need to axe that character and focus on Bronze Tiger. How many times has he owned Batman? Sheesh!
I know how to handle minority Supra-Heroes: Rad Lightning Atom Cue and their proteges G-Ray Phoenix Caz and Tuffenuf Watch for my book and follow my blog
Man this Aqualad is the boss, I love this new series I hope they contiue with this series. They need to put two black people on this team, well ill count Miss Martin.
Also the main question. Can DC handle minority characters? To a limited degree. I have yet to see DC or Marvel make a minority character a household name. Spiderman, Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, the Hulk, Iron Man.. etc etc At most they will switch up a main streamer who is weakest in sales and give him a new black persona Green Lantern, Aqualad. So as I said they can handle minority characters but only to a limited degree.
@Lazydainty To comic book fans. Also people do not picture Storm taking out the Hulk, Spiderman, or any main powerhouse in the Marvel Universe. Also would your grandma know who she is? Or a friend who doesnt follow comics? Do you know more then 2 people who have read more then 2 Storm title comics as opposed to reading about her in a team like the X-men etc etc. Batman, Superman, Wonderwoman, Spiderman, The Hulk, are all household names that people who dont read comics can even recognize.
The big 7 in the DC universe Superman, Bats, wonder woman, flash etc etc are all reflective of American Main stream culture. Yet they are supposed to be the WORLDS heros. Last time I checked people with brown skin, Asians, etc etc make up the bulk of the planets population. Yet the Demigod heros of planet earth are all white. Its not racist but they are marketing to their reader base who is mainly in the States. I just think DC needs to add in rival power/coolness heros from around the world.
The reason that there aren't many Aquaman-based group of characters is because he's a lame superhero. Granted, he's important to the JLA, but how many stories can you really create around Aquaman and his family and allies?
Saying that, i've seen the new Aqualad and I think he's pretty cool. He's got many more powers and abilities than Aquaman has. I think he'll work out.
Minority is that how u label African Americans u ppl r sickening there's barely enough black hero's n u hve the never to complain I mean wat the hell do u ppl want the whole damn comic book universe inversed wit caucsians
Does DC know how to handle minority characters? At this moment, they're doing a better job of it than Marvel. They've been pushing Luke Cage hard and doing a good job. Black Panther is on hiatus and they killed off Bishop. I love JSA, Mr. Terrific is an excellent character. Lightning was promising when she joined, hope they don't cast her aside. I want to see how they handle this new Aqualad, the look and the costume has me interested.
I agree with you dude, they shouldn't have killed off Ryan, Garth and Red Devil. But like you said, you never know with DC. Garth could come back one day. I still don't understand why they killed Garth off. They even put him in a One-shot Titan issue and they made me feel like they was going to do something big with him, but instead they killed him off. The bastards
The deaths don't bother me as much as the bringing the dead back 2 life does.. As far as the handling of minority characters go, DC does o.k.,I guess, but its the marketing of those characters where they hit a roadblock
The bottom line is...who is the primary target audience 4 most of these comics? Once that is realized, it's no wonder why minority characters don't do better than they do, but that's just me.
At least they are making the effort. I'm not sure that you're aware of this, but the original Teen Titans introduced the first black heroic character in comics, Mal Dunkin. Karen Beecher (aka Bumble Bee) was comics first black super heroine. Cyborg, John Stewart, Black Lightning, Vixen, Steel, and the Milestone characters have all been taken out of the scene, but each has endured, and re-emerged.
Good stuff Zip I was read about this on Comicvine. Hopfully they this guy does bite the dust. Having said that I agree why called him Aqualad? And as for the kills no doubt not necessary.
Well it seems that DC knows how handle african american characters just fine but what about mexican, asian, or characters of other minorities? Most of them like Bushido and Ryan Choi have been brutally killed off while others like Cassandra Cain have simply ruined or in the case of the New Blue Beetle, had his title canceled.
@raporfest I see your point I was shocked when they killed off Ryan Choi and Karate Kid. Karate Kid is a better fighter than batman, but batman is still alive and Karate Kid is still dead. They should of kept Blue Beetle series even though he is still with the teen titans. Im still not sure why cassandra cain character is not batgirl anymore, I was getting use to her being batgirl. Cain was replaced by Stephanie Brown you gotta be kidding me.
Is that Static Shock? I saw Raporfest's video on this subject. I don't have a problem with different-race characters in a book, just give the characters some substance and don't stick them in a story just because of they're a certain race, sex, religion, etc.
