@brands1 The "Apollon's axle" is two inches thick in the handle, as opposed to just over one for an Olympic bar. It also has non-rotating sleeves, thus the lifter must rotate the weights along with the bar if he attempts to clean it. These features of an Olympic bar in distinction to this bar enable one to lift much more weight.
Wait a moment... this is more than the Apollon Axle: you can see that it has 1 metallic disc at the extremity: the original Apollon Axle weights "only" 365 lbs. and Misha lifted it in various occasion.
Now dont misstake me, I understand the difficulty of the apollons axle, but also Misha seams to be a lesser oeverheadpresser nowadays than he was before?
What i have seen of him he has abandoned the clen and jerk style to do the more common "strongmanstyle" with more calfs and shoulders involved. This technique should limit hes performance compared to when he jerked the weight instead of pressing it.
Remember that Rezazadeh lifted more than Misha with really unorthodox technique (basically all backswing and hardly breaking parallel on the drop under). Granted, that doesn't mean he would have been able to complete the clean either, but if he had the press would have been a joke.
Moron, Rezazadeh could press that! World Record holder in the clean and jerk. 581 lbs over head! Misha would have pressed that if he could have cleaned it. Those axles have non-revolving bars. Makes it harder to clean.
@thrashmetal1029 Yep, but he can not deadlift 420 like Koklyaev, I assume. BTW Rezazadeh 263 kg is the world record, but is not the absolute record. Before they fiddled with the weight classes, official record was Taranenko 266kg. And Kurlovich did 265kg. Rumor has it, Taranenko c&j 280 in training, and cleaned 300 (!!!).
@democratusnostradams The label "continental clean" is frequently given to this exercise, but the term is actually oxymoronic. A bar is shouldered either clean or continental but not both. A clean, as the name implies, must be a swift single movement, whereas a continental involves hitching it up gradually on the belt and belly. "Continental" was a style of weightlifting that existed up until early last century, where this was an acceptable form of shouldering the weight.
too bad misha couldnt have cleaned this. He would have won this event. I'm pretty sure he did 190kg appolons axel before in 2007 IFSA finals.. wonder what happend here :(
Just shows that Derek is in a class of his own. If there was any other people I'd have thought could clean and press that, Koklyaev would be one of them.
I've always wondered how oly lifters would do in this event. He obviously has the power and strength to do it just not the technique. I've also wondered how strongmen would do in the c&j. Maybe if lbstone or ortmayer got in the olympics America would finally have a place in weightlifting.
i dont think strongmen will do extremely well in olympic lifting unless they train really hard and specifically for olympic lifts ....Olylift is combination of strength power flexibility technique speed
First of all is there any rotation of bar like Standard Olympic bar ? and there is no bending of bar like olympic bar ....this bar is stiff and thick......bcoz of thickness its difficult to rotate elbow and get it under the bar fast enough
shouldve laid down under it, pressed it and done a turkish get up

@Friday13thTaurus you're right, he could probably press it but not clean it.

doesnt misha have the world record for this event? 429?
razegfx 2 years ago
@razegfx he did 462 on 2010's Arnold I think, but Zydrunas could do 474 or something like that

@spagnot That's not sure. I mean, I think Misha can press it for sure, but he has no belly to clean it on. Rezazadeh does have the belly :p
Joohris 9 months ago
@spagnot I dont think olympic lifters are suited for strongman type events like this.
They call there "cleans" , the "Continental clean".
Simple put the bar was too thick for him to get a real dip underneath it without doing a continental clean.

i bet he has never tried continental before. He certainly pulled it plenty high for the clean though.
I bet he'll be training continental from now on

Looks like it was just a technique issue with Misha. He tried to start if off overhand instead of mixed.
