Even though VH didn't exist when this was video was done, they did not want it to be made. The company did not want to be sued and had to play it as safe, which meant no original VH music. While this limits the documentary there is still a ton of great stuff that has never turned up elsewhere, namely original bass player Mark Stone, as well as others who were close to the band and saw them in the earliest days. It's flawed but still essential for any hardcore VH fan.
Interesting comment at 6:30, when Tony Codgen stated; Eddie asked me "does that fuckin' guy play the guitar". Funny why Eddie would ask that. He didn't want (or need ) someone else to play guitar in the band, let alone the man they were looking for to be their bassist. Just thought that was kind of weird he would even ask that. It just didn't make sense to me.
@flipper79able, I agree man. Hagar seemed more down to earth to me but Roth was stuck on himself. It seemed to me it was all about him and not the group just what I have heard from band members and interviews.
@rmtdrums first of all you cant compare freddie mercury to daimond dave, theyre 2 different kinds of entertainers, where freddie had class and and an unbelievable voice, dave didnt, but he had attitude and sex appeal to the girls that freddie, cause he wasnt the best looking dude, didnt have, with dave its not about his talent as a musician but his ability to get the crowdgoing and project a serious rock god attitude! dave said it best, WE DONT WANNA CHANGE THE WORLD, WE JUST WANNA ROCK!!
great band but man alive, could the people they interviewed for this be anymore brain dead? "dude" should cease to be in your vocabulary after you reach 25
i wish house's n back gardens in northern ireland wer as big as the 1's in the usa so i could through parties like these. i've always grew up with that idea even tho i never knew things like this went on dave is a king sadly sammy was more of a entertainer 4 slow soppy songs, but he's still good just not as good as dave. hats off 2 both :)
I completely agree with the comment about Dave's voice. Yeah, he's not the most technically proficient vocalist but this is rock music, not classical. And his voice does sound great within that context. I can't imagine a more perfect vocalist for the band during their early years
@ritter89, agree 100%. I personally think people place WAY too much importance on vocal range. Having a high range doesn't necessarily make a singer good. Dave has a cool voice, end of story.
@slpmbp7469 Van Halen not Van Hagar......Dave rules. I probably couldn't spend more than five minutes in room with him without wanting to kill him but as far as a front man for a Rock and Roll band......no one comes close.
@slpmbp7469 early 80s at least and late seventies, van hagar is not classic VH. but not the whole 80s id say Guns N Roses had the rest of the 80s after VanHalen had their run

Freddie Mercury pissed all over Roth: Voice, Musician, Frontman, Song Writer. Mercury owns Roth in every department.
