To anyone who says that this is pointless because it is not likely to happen, I would point out that many of the TMA techniques people learn also seem pointless very often as well. But people eat those up no problem. Conversely, this video shows that grappling is not just important, but NECESSARY skill-set to have for anyone serious about self defense. There is no grappling Vs Standing debate, because ideally you should be highly trained in BOTH or you suck. A coin has 2 sides. Always.
These are all great ideas, though not very practical. You may be controlling the direction of your attacker's gun but at the same time, that attacker is panicking and firing the weapon rapidly. I highly doubt you'll be able to hang on to that barrel with a lightning-fast slide bolting back and forth. I wish I could say these were more practical, but gun disarms should deal with control of the wrist before the gun is even at a point where you can grab it. Otherwise, there's too much at risk.
@joey20112 *Psst* Your lack of familiarity with the subject is showing. It is pretty common knowledge at this point that pistols can't cycle if the slide is being held by a hand. If there is something blocking the slide, (a hand) it will not cycle, which means that it can only fire ONE shot, not multiple. The slide isn't going to be "bolting back and forth", it's gonna be stuck in your hand and that is a FACT that can be easily tested. And going for the wrist gives you NO control of the gun.
I dunno. Everything seems to hinge on getting a hold of and controlling that barrel first. What about other scenarios where you do not have such a chance? Also the possibility of an opponent drawing a hidden knife in a grapple is very real. He would not have to stab you, but merely a direct cut to your legs, limbs or a major artery could be fatal.
I like this...but I can't think of a reason the guy with the gun would come in close to you..it would have to be a start fighting, THEN pull the gun out while fighting and in guard.
I would like to see some of these applications with a knife though..it would make more sense. Great video though man..I like alot.
@Wahi91 1.You are just seeing a small amount of footage here so don't assume that the long range aspect wasn't covered during the course, I have been on a course with Southnarc and he did indeed cover that aspect of firearm training. 2 You will be surprised just how many shootings occur from close range for example a 'mugger' will most likely get extremely close to their intended target and then pull a weapon (gun or knife) which they will then intimidate by jamming it in their face.
@jiujitsu1011 The point is that many fire fights can occur in extreme close range and chances are you could end up rolling in the dirt with someone who is armed with a gun or knife so Southnarc is just showing how to adapt something like bjj into a weapon based environment.

It's nice to see that someone is answering this question.

While these ideas are nice in theory, I can't think of a situation where an assailant armed with a gun would be in my guard or even on his knees.

@jamespohh I guess you'd better learn to defend against knives in the grapple too, then. :]
VideoGameBandit 8 months ago
@VideoGameBandit Yes we'd all have to. They do that already in my school. Stickfighting while grappling and knife fighting while grappling.
jamespohh 8 months ago
@jamespohh Then what's your point, exactly?
VideoGameBandit 7 months ago
@VideoGameBandit the point is this aspect shouldn't be ignored

That's ridiculous. If your oponent has a gun, he won't get closer, he just will shot you when he got a chance, when you can't touch him.
This would be nice if none have a gun, if they were fighting in the floor only with their bodies
