The AIM-54 phoenix was a truly exceptional missile, and it was always unfortunate that no other aircraft could mount these weapons. Even fighters like the F-15 probably could have benefited greatly from equipping the world's longest-ranged air to air missile with its own active radar.
The radar system on Iranian F 14s are brand new radars much better then the original F 14 who already in those times could target 6 different targets at long range but todays fighters like 1the F 16 -F18 or F 15s can only target 4 not even at that range of the F 14 .The F 14s radar are huge and thats why the air plane is so huge and the Iranian Phoenix missiles have much longer range then 120 AMRAMs .

@callofdutyguy9 The F-14 is a very capable fighter given that it gets updated from time to time. The F-14 was retired from US service due to political reasons, and maintaining a heavy fighter on a carrier was a cumbersome job. That's why they brought in the F-18 Super Hornet and now planning for the F-35.
@callofdutyguy9 Thanks for asking. I am not sure exactly, might be due to the costs of maintaining it. It was probably in their interests to reduce the burden on tax-payers money. Also, a military would always go for cost effective solutions. The F-18 SH is very maintenance friendly. As a rule of thumb, the cost of the aircraft is 1/3 the cost of the its entire life-cycle. But then again, the F-35 program isn't cheap. Fully implementing the F-35 is gong to take a while.

Too bad Iran stuck with 25 F-14A Tomcat which are old. Iran F-14 have no longer have spare parts. When there are no spare parts all the F-14 are all dead and number size of F-14 going down. These F-14 could easily be shot down by Israeli F-15C/D, F-15I, F-16C/D, and F-16I.

also, we all don't know the true specifications and capabilities of this modified/modernized Iranian F-14s, so don't underestimate them.
@itom95 sence they got those F14s they dident recived any spare parts... the only way they could maintaince a few of them operational is buy taking parts from other F14s to keep atleast few fliable... if the Aim54 was so strong US would still use it.. it maybe have long range but i dont think its that accurate and hard to avoid missle, Aim120C is the same as Aim120B only a version of smaller missle to fit the F22 small storage inside the plane, and the Aim54s range is 150km not 180.

AIM-54 was the best long range AA missile the US had, the reason they retired it becoz it was EXPENSIVE. actually Iran had problems making them too, so they took a HAWK SAM, and turn it into a AIM-54 alternative. it has about the same range, but more accurate and maneuverable than AIM-54 (supposedly), and can only fire 4 simultaneously instead of 6.

@davidds0 i'm sure they can, F-14s are not some 'shitty' jet. furthermore, Iran also equipped those F-14 with new Russian techs. in fact, their F-14's AN/AWG-9 high powered radar's range/capabilities has increased by half.
e.g. AN/AWG-9 could detect a cruise missile at 150km. now they can do around 220+km.

@IknowJohnLear Correct, but these aircraft are only detectable for a short amount of time with low frequencies. Low frequency waves also pick up a lot of crap is what I've been told. The F-14 is a very great aircraft. Kills at long ranges. We can't say any aircraft is better than the other because we have to see it to believe it.
How ever, at 40km, I was able to fire one sparrow AIM-7, and one Phoenix missile at f-22. After that I had to quickly do some maneuvers to counter and confuse AIM-120 which was fired by f-22. Unfortunately, Sparrow missile went boles tic because of its pour radar trackers, but Phoenix missile was so close to hit f-22, but because of stealth, high maneuvers, and high ECM frequencies it managed to confuse Phoenix missile very easy. After that we both got in to dogfight, which f-22 won,.......
How ever, in this highly accurate simulation, I discovered that F-14 radar can track and detect any hostile air threat in 340 to 700 km depending on the enemies radar cross section level, and the size of the air craft. F-14 was not successful against stealth fighters like F-22 raptor, cuz stealth reduced the radar detection, and by then f-22 was already with in the range to fire AIM-120 ( which was 50km) , and its was very difficult to scape form that missile or confuse it..............
JohnLaer, SR-71 is not a complete stealth air craft, read more about SR-71. Only they used radar absorbing material on the skin of this air craft, which makes it partly stealthy. How ever, I am Persian, and I been using highly accurate air to air combat simulation that involves stealth, 4th and 3rd generation fighter and servilance air crafts. And trust me, I been put f-14 in so many ultimate test against so many new generation and old generation air crafts.......
Dude regardless that f-14 was came to play during 70s, it still capable of taking down almost any 4th generation fighter air craft , accept the stealth fighters. Its powerful and highly capable radar is so powerful, that IRIAF used it as mini-Awakes during Iran-Iraq war, and AIM-54 is with the range of 150km is breaking record for any air-to-air missiles, and once its fired at u, is very hard to get a way with it, with almost 86% accuracy.

They do have the planes & the technology. They did not used the F-14 fully in Iran-Iraq war. After the war, through black market & reverese engineering they where successfully able to do all maintnance. Plus their pilots are very gutsy.

Actually thats not true the F15 was a response to the mig foxbat and the new and improved mix foxhound would be an easy transaction between iran and russia, F14s are faster and more maneuverable than the F15 they are basically for interceptor role while f15 is a multi role fighter, only reason the us phased it out of service is cuz several time private companies sold illegal F14 parts to Iran and they needed to prevent that from happening as well as the F14 costs alot to maintain.

The F-14 was developed for long range interception of threats to carrier groups, and could be used for air to ground attacks. It still has one of the best radars capable of engaging up to 6 targets at ranges of over 100 miles! In that sense, even the F-15 is no match for the Tomcat. The Iranians have also upgraded their F-14s over the years so don't count it as being old or outdated.

I did see a website with an artist's concept drawing, and it does resemble contemporary stealth jet fighters (F-22, F-35, etc.). I don't believe Iran has an operational prototype yet, but if they can pull this off, their air force will be taken to whole new level of combat effectiveness.

The F-14 was retired from US service due to political reasons, and maintaining a heavy fighter on a carrier was a cumbersome job. That's why they brought in the F-18 Super Hornet and now planning for the F-35.

@callofdutyguy9 Thanks for asking. I am not sure exactly, might be due to the costs of maintaining it. It was probably in their interests to reduce the burden on tax-payers money. Also, a military would always go for cost effective solutions. The F-18 SH is very maintenance friendly. As a rule of thumb, the cost of the aircraft is 1/3 the cost of the its entire life-cycle. But then again, the F-35 program isn't cheap. Fully implementing the F-35 is gong to take a while.

Too bad Iran stuck with 25 F-14A Tomcat which are old. Iran F-14 have no longer have spare parts. When there are no spare parts all the F-14 are all dead and number size of F-14 going down. These F-14 could easily be shot down by Israeli F-15C/D, F-15I, F-16C/D, and F-16I.

@itom95 sence they got those F14s they dident recived any spare parts... the only way they could maintaince a few of them operational is buy taking parts from other F14s to keep atleast few fliable... if the Aim54 was so strong US would still use it.. it maybe have long range but i dont think its that accurate and hard to avoid missle, Aim120C is the same as Aim120B only a version of smaller missle to fit the F22 small storage inside the plane, and the Aim54s range is 150km not 180.

AIM-54 was the best long range AA missile the US had, the reason they retired it becoz it was EXPENSIVE. actually Iran had problems making them too, so they took a HAWK SAM, and turn it into a AIM-54 alternative. it has about the same range, but more accurate and maneuverable than AIM-54 (supposedly), and can only fire 4 simultaneously instead of 6.
but yea, AIM-120C is still a good missile.

I know that's not evidence of any wrong doing, but the rest of the world is uncomfortable with the thought of Iran with nuclear weapons. Especially when you threaten other countrys. e.g. AN/AWG-9 could detect a cruise missile at 150km. now they can do around 220+km.

How ever, at 40km, I was able to fire one sparrow AIM-7, and one Phoenix missile at f-22. After that I had to quickly do some maneuvers to counter and confuse AIM-120 which was fired by f-22. Unfortunately, Sparrow missile went boles tic because of its pour radar trackers, but Phoenix missile was so close to hit f-22, but because of stealth, high maneuvers, and high ECM frequencies it managed to confuse Phoenix missile very easy. After that we both got in to dogfight, which f-22 won,.......

How ever, in this highly accurate simulation, I discovered that F-14 radar can track and detect any hostile air threat in 340 to 700 km depending on the enemies radar cross section level, and the size of the air craft. F-14 was not successful against stealth fighters like F-22 raptor, cuz stealth reduced the radar detection, and by then f-22 was already with in the range to fire AIM-120 ( which was 50km) , and its was very difficult to scape form that missile or confuse it..............

JohnLaer, SR-71 is not a complete stealth air craft, read more about SR-71. Only they used radar absorbing material on the skin of this air craft, which makes it partly stealthy. How ever, I am Persian, and I been using highly accurate air to air combat simulation that involves stealth, 4th and 3rd generation fighter and servilance air crafts. And trust me, I been put f-14 in so many ultimate test against so many new generation and old generation air crafts.......

Dude regardless that f-14 was came to play during 70s, it still capable of taking down almost any 4th generation fighter air craft , accept the stealth fighters. Its powerful and highly capable radar is so powerful, that IRIAF used it as mini-Awakes during Iran-Iraq war, and AIM-54 is with the range of 150km is breaking record for any air-to-air missiles, and once its fired at u, is very hard to get a way with it, with almost 86% accuracy.

They do have the planes & the technology. They did not used the F-14 fully in Iran-Iraq war. After the war, through black market & reverese engineering they where successfully able to do all maintnance. Plus their pilots are very gutsy.

We GAVE them F-14's to fight Iraq(considering that Iraq was fighting Israel and we wanted to help our allies) but it will NOT come back to bite us, considering that our oldest F-15's can shoot down their F-14's before the F-14 even sees it.

Actually thats not true the F15 was a response to the mig foxbat and the new and improved mix foxhound would be an easy transaction between iran and russia, F14s are faster and more maneuverable than the F15 they are basically for interceptor role while f15 is a multi role fighter, only reason the us phased it out of service is cuz several time private companies sold illegal F14 parts to Iran and they needed to prevent that from happening as well as the F14 costs alot to maintain.

Morons like you obviously respond to these videos without any knowledge of military equipment, and tactics. The F-14 was developed for long range interception of threats to carrier groups, and could be used for air to ground attacks. It still has one of the best radars capable of engaging up to 6 targets at ranges of over 100 miles! In that sense, even the F-15 is no match for the Tomcat. The Iranians have also upgraded their F-14s over the years so don't count it as being old or outdated.

I did see a website with an artist's concept drawing, and it does resemble contemporary stealth jet fighters (F-22, F-35, etc.). I don't believe Iran has an operational prototype yet, but if they can pull this off, their air force will be taken to whole new level of combat effectiveness.

Well said....it is time we started to think about establishing trade with people who treat others fairly. Politics aside, Iranians flying this airframe is scary regardless if has Block A avionics.
