I have a mongoose switchback mountain bike that i just put 1.5 road tires on. I want to convert it to a fixie but it has vertical dropouts. Can anybody help me, like tell me what i have to do and if what I got going is good?
@xX6jdub9XxaaaA Back then mountain bikes use to be durable and had the same geometry as a road bike like before. They were steel Lugged or aluminum/steel. Some are able to be converted.
yea.. i got a clubman bike with vertical dropouts, and im going to convert it into a fixie but this guy just confused me about the tensioner crap he was talking about... do i need that?
You most likely can't convert it, as you have no means of chain tension. Chain tensioners work for singlespeed, but any back-pedaling will destroy any chain tensioner you put on a fixed gear.
Singlespeed conversion you can do, fixed gear nope.
they are track ends not dropouts, horizontal dropouts require the wheel to be pulled forwards, what's more YOU CANNOT use a chain tensioner on a FIXED GEAR only a single speed and out this video is rubbish

Tensioner on a fixie? what a douche! try a ENO Hub from white ind that will adjust the chain tension on vertical dropouts. Or measure the chain!

how to kill yourself in a single step , put a chain tensioner on a fixed gear!
wa1523 2 years ago 24
hey transane u !CANNOT! run a tensioner on a fixed gear
the force of skidding and or sudden stopping will bend the tensioner no tensioner is built to withstand this force.
u can on ss as i have in the past i do know what im talking about i have a ss and a fixed gear.
twat. ha.

RiCaRdO408 2 years ago
you need it if you cant get the tension correct on your setup.
Depends on gearing and chainstay length really.
Ive seen some fixies with verticle dropouts that work, while the majority of them dont.
