Yes, but he generally just makes small dents, many you can't see. It's the only way to disassemble these. Whenever I have done restoration work, I have had to pound bent beads back out a little, grind the small dents down smooth, and such. I have never seen the integrity of the rim compromised (in my opinion). These rims are very tough -grade steel.
These are not split rims! They are lock ring wheels. There is a difference. Either way, this guy knows how to swing a duckbill!

The big concern was damaging the ring &/or it not seating when you go back together
it could blow off & hurt or kill.

Try doing 20 or 30 of these a day. It was not fun but it is what we had.
