  • the actress playing Violet Smith must be a very talented performer...if I were her, I could have forgotten all my lines when Jeremy Brett's Sherlock Holmes looked at me, and I may have just stared into his drop-dead gorgeous face...swoon XD

  • "Oh that odious mustache" hahahahah XD

  • i gotta watch this for english homework -.-

  • Poor Mr. Woodley...he just wanted some kiss as a good German!

  • I love Miss Smith's yellow gown...looks like Emma Carew in Frank Wildhorn's musical Jekyll & Hyde

  • No means no

  • pushy lecherous gent!

  • lol. how fake is Woodley's mustache?

  • @STONESGAM His mustache is real dude.

  • "i can give you diamonds...DIAAAAMOOONDS!!!!!"

perhaps he should marry the diamonds o.o he seems to have a real passion for them, and hey, he's already familiar with south africa. it's probably where he fell in love with his precious diamonds to begin with o.0

  • "so I believe" haha

  • erm....6:05.....i dont get it?

shes engaged. why's she soo sad? cheer up woman lol

  • @yrti0121 bloody women huh? never happy!

  • She's given way too much money for too little work, a man accosts her and here she's followed. What else will it take for her to leave?? Of course, in those days there was no help for people in dire straights, depending on just the $ they took in. Especially women who made far, far less than men. And if I remember correctly, she supported her mother? How many of us have held on to a bad situation hoping it would change?

  • I'm amazed at how wonderful this rendition of Sherlock Holmes is.

  • anyone else think he sounds like Stephen Fry at 1:23

  • The Blaggard!!

  • i find it so intriguing that they bring cards on little trays. *giggle*

'i dont believe that for a moment'. why, of course, i do like smoke in my face. its so good for the eyes! well, girl, those boobs practicaly popping out dont help you any.

'i wish you joy,' with such an unjoyous voice. but i'd love it if holmes said that to me :D

oh, he can be so considerate and charming.

holmes asks and doesnt care to write it down, so watson does, lol

  • I don't get that a man would pay someone, who wasn't a tutor, for music lessons and then keep her all week long? Anyone?

Thank you Dragon for taking the time to share these with us. :)

That is SOME dress! They were all for modesty but I guess that didn't include bussoms. lol

  • @Songsmirth sorry i hit the thumbs down by mistake and i dnt even know how to take it back my bad :(

  • Girl: "But I am already enganged!"

    Holmes: "Ah..."

    Watson: "OH!"

Lol, Watson thought he could hit that. xDDD

  • Have any of you tried watching Holmes with the audio to caption feature? It's hilarious. :)

  • @CaptainPolaris I've never heard of that. How do you do it please? Thanks!

  • @Songsmirth Some Youtube videos have a small "CC" on the lower right-hand side of the progress bar. Try masterblackmailer4u's The Blue Carbuncle videos as an example.

  • @CaptainPolaris Thank you, thank you!! I didn't know that. You've made my day. :)

  • The look of disapointment on sherlock's face when she says she is already engaged

  • wat a coincidence i am born on 3rd nov 1995 and jeremy brett was born on 3rd nov and died in1995.

  • @AfrinBanu i was born 3rd Nov too!!!

  • @AfrinBanu I was born 3rd Nov too!!!

  • Um, Woodley, acquaintance rape much?

  • @BroadwayFiend My thoughts. The man actually scares me. It makes you wonder why this seemingly decent man would have him in his house? He's got to know what kind of man he is. And how often even in today's society don't rapists give the excuse that the women wanted "it?" Sick human beings. .

  • "oh.. er..I don't regard mr carruthers as old!" haha

And what kind of accent is that?! lol

  • @thelouisfanclub If you mean Mr Woodley's accent, it's an Australian trying to sound South African lol

  • sounds like a pom to me

  • a girl always knows...

    SO I BELIEVE...

    this is very Watsonish!

  • @Seymourir

    Haha yeah

    "the blaggard!"

  • thank you so much! I must get the box set now that i have watched these!

  • he hits like a bitch

  • dr. watson looks like will ferrell!!

this story is so wonderful!! i am enjoying it immensely. love watson and holmes.

  • This is like, the second of the three Violets?

  • Yes, though there are 4 of them in the Canon actually :)

  • Oh dear. *needs to study more* XD

  • This has got nothing to do with feminists - statistics should tell you that men are more likely to run amok and commit the crime of rape. Also, a visit to the local animal shelter will tell you how many pets are afraid of men.

  • 6:38-6:50- I love how Holmes is beginning to lose interest a bit and then when she begs for his help and mentions that she's being followed he just comes to life! This is just like the Holmes from the stories- Brett was brilliant =P

  • I love how he just circles her like a vulture. What a creep!

  • Im hooked!!! Now I have to watch this even though its 1 in the morning!

  • "We wish you joy."

He says it like he doesn't care, like the only reason he says it is because of the conventions of a gentleman. *sighs* Oh Holmes.

  • who is the unfortunate man? and than we wish you joy ha ha holmes your a funny man

  • Shouldn't she have left the gents to their port wine and cigars?

  • gallant of Mr. Carruther's, to be sure... but ugh, what a "friend" he had. Woodley was lucky Miss Violet was too well-mannered to give him what he really deserved. if it were me, he'd have been separated from certain body parts the hard way >_>

  • I love it when he says

    "We wish you joy...."

Well, gee Holmes, lets try to contain our enthusiasm there, shall we? ;)

  • Yeah, you know that inside, he's just jumping for joy. :)

  • @QuinnthePrincess HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

  • Lock up all the women and children when that guy steps out the house.

  • This Sherlock Holmes actually looks like the one from the book! And Watson too(as I imagined them), excellent! Thanks!

  • Well. That is some proposal!!

  • #2- ignore that above!! i forgot the wacky South African accent!!

  • the geek in the red moustache is not English!! what accent is that? Hungarian? Rumanian?

  • South African

  • "Mr. Woodley" is supposed to be an Afrikaner, that's the accent. This was the eighties when it was still fashionable to bash South Africans--remember "Lethal Weapon II"?

  • And I guess the world-wide hostility to Apartheid made it even more acceptable.

  • I guess everyone knows that the address of the place you see here is the real 221 Baker street? It has been this way since Doyle first wrote about Holmes. People from all over the world write to Holmes at this address--and get replies. And these are college educated bright people.

  • There used to be a lady living there where she would reply to the letters by saying Holmes was retired and living as a bee-keeper in the Southwest of England.

  • remdog, are you by any chance referring to these reports: "Sherlock Holmes, retired on the Sussex Downs, meets a 15-year-old tomboy with brains you wouldn't believe."

  • 'fraid not. But after reading up on it, I found out that Doyle did retire Holmes to Sussex. But as can be seen, I had absolutely no clue as to where Sussex was.

  • "Holmes was retired and living as a bee-keeper in the Southwest of England." I just listened to a video of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle speaking mentioning Holmes as a beekeeper and the letters from all over the world addressed to Holmes, "and his dumb friend, Dr. Watson."

  • Poor Watson! People just assume he's dumb when he's really not.

  • That thing with the red mustache lumbers around like a drunk ape.

  • Good Lord, he does. I was half-expecting him to start beating his chest and grunting.

  • ^_^

  • He tries to rape her and expects her to like him for it?

  • Absolutely twisted.

  • And that smoke from his cheap cigar smells like burning dung.

  • Okay, I apologize for the cigar comment. It was just that the woman seems to be greatly bothered by his smoking. He is probabally one of the worse villians Holmes ran across. The guy smokes, is a drunk and tries to rape the woman working for his boss, among other things.

  • Thanks.

  • ha ha the guy got kicked out and didnt get to use dimonds

  • Carrouthers is getting fresh, himself. I dare say it may have been a set up. Will have to watch the other parts to find out...

    Thanks for uploading

  • dude thanks soo much for these videos

I lost my book and i have to read it for school

    Your the best!!!

  • Brett thrashing the odious Woodley is a standout in the entire series. Notice his perfect Victorian style of pugilism; the footwork; the science.

And the vain, triumphant glance in the mirror afterwards is another lovely little touch.

  • mr. woodly u fucktard. im gonna kill u

  • she is going to marry a electrical engineer. look at the pompous words

  • I suppose the position was more prestigious in those days when electricity was less common. Also notice how everyone talks in a more eloquent fashion than nowadays.

  • south african accent, and roman hands!

  • mr. woodley is like a british jeff foxworthy...

  • mr woodley, even though a jerk, has an athletic build. he nimbly bitch-slapped mr. carrouthers. also i haven't heard the term blackguard in awhile.

  • mr "wood"ley? I love it.

  • miss smith has a pretty good rack of lamb on her

  • Come come now, we're all about the artistic merit of the production. Besides, its probably just due to the miracle of Victorian evening gowns.

  • Yay for evening gowns...

  • Carrugthers or rather, John Castle, is indeed very handsome.

But Brett is not behind him.

I love this episode, probably one of my favourites. When I saw it, I was half expecting that Carrugthers would get the girl...pity it didnt happen

  • Thanks for the info.

  • I wanna buy this. Could anyone of you guys recommend a DVD collection. I love watching these things on a Sunday evening.

  • @agibbos I'd recommend the complete series. It's a bit pricey, but it's worth it.

  • @2wingo just watch it all for free on youtube!

  • When Woodley was getting up and Smith turned around slowly to look at him, I thought she was going to hiss and scratch him like a cat. XD

  • Yes, Carruthers is very handsome. Perhaps you've seen him as a police inspector in some of the older Miss Marple films.

  • David Burke was a very brave and loyal Watson.

  • I see that Mr. Woodely is a stalker...

  • I think Watson wants to hit that like the fist of an angry god.

  • Word.

  • XD!?

  • Smith: "I am being followed."

Holmes rushes over to be side and helps her sit down.

Smith: "I don't mean right this instant Mr. Holmes."

  • Woodley: Not the ladies' man.

  • Yeah, the strategy of doing the opposite of what woman says doesn't go down that well most of the time.

  • Nice and slow - the way drama should be - to let the imagination work. Great stories from more innocent times.

  • we wish u joy.... - such a classic!!!

  • 6:10...the look on holmes' face...so disappointed...

  • hehe, yeah. bless him.

  • the guy who played woodley did a good job...he really creeped me out...

  • I love the Woodley guys South African accent. I was born there and it makes me cringe every time someone tries to do the accent. So i'm glad this guy managed to get it right.

  • Charlize Theron is South African. Her IMDB bio says English is her second language so she's a true Afrikaner. Do you suppose her native accent comes out when she gets mad?

  • I have no idea...I think it depends on if she grew up in a mainly english- or afrikaanse-speaking household. Even tho most kids in SA grow up bilingual, usually there is a preference in the family -

eg I have almost no accent cuz my mum is the only hardcore afrikaaner in my house, but my cousin has a very strong one cuz her family speaks afrikaanse all the time.

Wow, sorry for going on so long, but ur question jst got me thinking lol

  • I thought it was once a big deal for white South Africans as to whether they traced their ancestry to TrekBoers, French Hugenots, Germans or gold/diamond rush-era English speakers. Especially in view of the tortured history between the Boers and the British Empire; I was always under the impression that the "White Tribe" was anything but homogeneous.

  • I have heard that there was a degree of tension between some south africans once upon a time (eg french vs dutch), but I don't think it's such a big deal anymore, or at least it hasn't been for me (of english, dutch-afrikaaner and german ancestry). Like I said, it depends on individual famalies and I can only give my own personal experiences as evidence.

  • I could have sworn to having seen Carruthers actor somewhere before....

  • Who's playing the part of Miss Smith in the movie?

  • yeah, but she's a fairly annoying actor.

  • i like the one with matt frewer better but this one is good too

  • jeremy bret was so hot as Holmes and Watson was silly^^

  • I like Watson.

  • I like the greyhair man, look kind of handsome. However lovvvee Bret as Holmes

  • I love Jeremy as Sherlock Holmes, this is one of my favorite cases!

  • SAME!!!
