Chappers, I disagree with discouraging people not to study sight reading and sticking with pentatonic scales, What if you want to become a session musicians you need to read!
Actually, I'd insist first and foremost on Chapman's first point: I quit attending lessons because of getting bored of being taught things that I'm not interested in and then I find myself readings tabs myself instead of going to lessons ;(
That was the problem I always had here, they kept trying to teach me something I already knew. Discard the fact that I had 3 different teachers in the span of a month, it was still very annoying and I wasn't going anywhere.
The last teacher I had, the very first question he asked me was whether I had students myself... He said that teaching what you know is probably the best way there is to learn! :)
As much as i think my guitar teacher is great (he offers lessons for free), and he teaches me how to improvise blues etc, I'd love to have a lesson with you. But because you live at the opposite end of the country to me, I'd be more willing to go for a Digital ML Experience. Thing is, i'll have to ave up some money from gigs and other sources, which could take a while, so I was just wondering, will you be continuing to offer these digital lessons over the next year or so?
Hi Chappers, I have a Jackson DX10D Dinky and I'm looking to put a DiMarzio Super Distortion in the bride and a LiquiFire in the neck. Anythinkg i need to becareful of, size matters or anything like that?
@Chilly757 Hi chilli the liquifire is an excellent pickup, you will probably want to opt for an F spaced pickup in the bridge as the spacings match the strings you can use a standard pickup but the F spaced is designed specifically for the wider bridges like the floyds and fender bridges...
@xTiLkx Watch the entire video. The 40 minutes is just to tell him about yourself...after that, he will spend time on making a video especially to help YOU, which I presume takes some time, and makes it worth it.
Chappers, just a quick question ;) If I understood correctly, after a "Monkey Lord Experience", you not only get a 2 hour lesson but also like a plan for the next months for you to study at home, right?
If we try out the "Digital ML Experience" will the 30min lesson give us the same material required to study and develop our guitar approach for months?
Btw, excellent video, I'm thinking about giving out begginer guitar lessons and these tips will help me a lot \o
My guitar teacher is what you described as a bad teacher. he has a list of songs on his pc of about 100 and keeps just saying which song i want to do and if i say actually i'd like to do something different like improvisation so he taught me the g scale and now has gone back to the "which song next?" attitude. i don't know what to say to him to stop this. ideally i'd like to change teacher however i get his lessons in a shop so i couldn't really just go to another teacher there.
@futurerockstar09 I'd say you simply tell him you're getting the sense that his instruction isn't what you're looking for, and that you're thinking about looking elsewhere. I mean, you're paying him good money, so there's no sense in continuing if you're not getting what you're after. You can always teach yourself until you find someone else. The fact of the matter is that if all you're doing is learning covers, you can probably do that on your own.
@jaredmkl From what I understand Misha is really busy working on the next Periphery album in his small break between now and Sonisphere, as well as obviously practising for Sonisphere and sorting out all their stuff. I think if Misha was gonna be there Chappers would have announced it already (I know I for one would buy a ticket pretty much straight away if I knew I was gonna get some lesson time with Misha xD).
i think that having a teacher is only good at the very beginning just for the basics, then if want to have an unique style the best guitar teacher that you can find is YOU
hey chappers, My guitar teacher just teaches me songs, but he also teaches me techniques on how to create some of my own stuff, should i stay with this teacher or go and find another one, i enjoy his lessons, but do you feel as if im missing out?
I really like this video. When I was in Thailand as a studen (my Dad was an ex-pat) I became really close to my guitar teacher. He was almost like a councillor, he was extremely gentle in his direction and very understanding. You kind of remind me of him :)
Just want to say I think you're doing a great service with these kind of videos. I enjoy them as much as the ones where you're actually playing.
And you can add this to the list...A good teacher is personable (which is subjective, I know), and is not afraid to give up the goods. I remember years ago meeting with a few teachers that treated their own playing as a secret to be kept. They couldn't get over themselves.
Chappers hi i would really like to speed up my learning proccess i have a fellow guitarist who has been playing in less time than me but his lead chops and theory approch is amazing and i am a good rhythm player i am looking to learn lead because i dont know any theory and feel as if i've stumbled into this i've been playing for 2 years by the way :-/
i went to a guy once, walked in his house, didn't see a guitar anywhere, he set up a music stand, put a "how to play guitar vol 1" book on it and said read that! At the end he charged me £15! I said:
Chappers, I personally have problems with finding people to play with. I don't live in a city and am not an adult so it is hard to find people. No matter what I do, I'm not successful, hope the Monkey Lord can give me a little advice :-)
I just want to say a HUGE "Chicago Style" THANK YOU, for this! It has inspired me to be an even BETTER guitar teacher! I would also like to add that it is perfectly fine to say, "I don't know," instead of trying to make something up, if one is not 100% sure of one's answer to a question. As a "teacher," I am ALWAYS a "student," as well! There is NEVER a "graduation" from playing guitar, in my humble opinion. There is ALWAYS something to learn!
You are the BEST! Thanks, Again, my Simian Friend!
when I was small and wanted to learn guitar there weren't any good teachers and it was damn expensive for some reason! and now that there are good teachers and it got cheaper I haven't got any time! tried to teach myself aaaand I suck!
so your video lesson thing that your doing now is kind of like what Tom Quayle does, 75 GBP and you tell him what you want to learn and he makes a long ass video teaching you in depth. o btw you should get him toplay at monkeyfest.
I had a teacher 7 years ago when I started playing, he wanted to make me play classical guitar, and I hated it I just wanted to rock out... that grossed me out of lessons, so I'm selft taught.
But I'm starting to feel the limitations of being self taught...
I think that a great teacher doesn't necessarily have to be a mind-blowing "technician", but he should always know the exact nuts-n-bolts of guitar playing in order to help his students progress. Chappers i got a problem bro. i so sooooo badly want to come to monkey fest but i dont have any friends that play guitar or any god damn instrument for that matter lol fuck knows whats up wiv um lol
but i cant really come on my own.
and what do we need to bring. like do we need to bring an amp? lmao sorry if its a silly question
Great video Rob, all the things you said they shouldn't do, my teacher did lol. Basically he went on about how amazing he was and made me purchase a book about Blues which was wrote by a friend of his. When he realised I knew scales etc he said "You should tell me you know these things" then the next part was "I'm gonna play over this track, watch my hands".
i think its good to learn from a non guitarist because we tend to be EXTREMELY close minded, and have another teacher you can go to for technique. best teacher ive ever had was a flute/piano player who had trouble fingering out chords on a guitar. almost ALL theory can be applied to any genre if your creative and it will make your playing more interesting and less generic than a counterpart who just learns their basic scales, licks, chord progressions etc.
I'm being taught by a SHEET MUSIC accoustic teacher, I have to edmit it was frustrating in the begining but I'm getting the hang of it now.
I use a Les Paul & Jazz at home and a FAT accoustic with him.
The sheet approach has thought me 2 things, the note positions on the fretboard and I think its definately helping with the improv. (My first teacher was a "cover" one so that lasted 1 lesson...)
it's funny, i had a teacher who wasn't very communicable but was a fantastic player and knew tons of thoery, sadly he had to quit due to other things in his life
my new teacher is the nicest guy in the world but keeps teaching me songs everyweek and isn't as good as the last one when it comes to playing and theory. I don't have the heart to tell him i wanna learn something other than songs because he's nice as hell and i'm not sure if he knows all the things someone like the chappers does :(
@OtherRealmer Sure I have some tips, first write down everything that you don't know because you will need to see the big picture in order to form a plan.
In the following order go look up, google, Youtube where ever you can the following:
Open chords, pentatonic scales, blues licks, Interval naming, intervalic recognition, the diatonic "major" scale, harmonising the major scale, the chord scale, naming chords, the caged system, modal application, reading rhythm notation ;-)
Hey Chappers, I have a serious question that's bugging me...
Is it good to cram yourself with licks that other people teach you? It's easier obviously to learn other people's licks but that way I won't sound like myself when improvising, I'll just sound like another million people who use that pentatonic lick or whatever.
But writing your own licks from scratch is kinda hard and building a whole storehouse of them sounds impossible. So what path should I tread?
@anshumanchaube95 You will always sound like yourself no matter what you learn/play... Lear as many licks as you can for a few years - then you must write your own ;-)
@RobChappers Would it be possible for a future video to go over one of your standard Pentatonic licks.. the ones you do in those Andertons reviews where you bend and hold and close your eyes (lol).. and then descend down the main pentonic box to the 6th string? There's probably 1000 variations but even one would be cool to see.. btw, this video was very good considering there was no guitar in it!
A true guitar teacher will sacrifice some of their WIN, like an Huschmid, as the carrot on a stick to teach folks like me to learn the harmonic minor modes! Thought it was TOO HARD a year ago, but know I know them - thanks ML!
Chappers you truly are a gift to the world, as a frustrated guitar "player" (If i can be called that) and having some rubbish teachers before, its great to know its possible to get help from someone who actually gives a toss :)
@chickenoncheese For unsolicited advice: Take the song and put it in Audacity (free program, very user friendly) and slow it down to half speed using the tempo tool (this makes the song sound the same just slower, doesn't effect pitch) then play along to it and slowly speed the song back up to normal. One at full speed, start using a metronome to get it laser precise.
my tips on finding a good guitar teacher just go to youtube dot com slash robchappers and look for the almighty furry shredding primate of win known as the monkey lord and get ready to have your face melted lol

Hi Chappers,
I think that a great teacher doesn't necessarily have to be a mind-blowing "technician", but he should always know the exact nuts-n-bolts of guitar playing in order to help his students progress. Of course he should have an advanced level of technical ability (there's no other way to gain knowledge, unless trying stuff out yourself), but it shouldn't be a pre-requisite that he be above and beyond his students. Any thoughts on that?
Nasosdag 9 months ago 4
@Nasosdag Here's how I see it, if you want to learn shred or progressive rock/metal then your teacher should be up to the task with his speed, sweeping, legato etc... on the other hand if you want to learn blues then your teacher should be able to improvise blues lead to a good level.
For example... I am not the guy to teach you Jazz, I can play a little but it's a unique skill set that I do not specialize in.
Choose the teacher that fits the task at hand ;-)

I'm being taught by a SHEET MUSIC accoustic teacher, I have to edmit it was frustrating in the begining but I'm getting the hang of it now.
I use a Les Paul & Jazz at home and a FAT accoustic with him.
The sheet approach has thought me 2 things, the note positions on the fretboard and I think its definately helping with the improv. (My first teacher was a "cover" one so that lasted 1 lesson...)
Cheers Chappers, keep it up \../

it's funny, i had a teacher who wasn't very communicable but was a fantastic player and knew tons of thoery, sadly he had to quit due to other things in his life
my new teacher is the nicest guy in the world but keeps teaching me songs everyweek and isn't as good as the last one when it comes to playing and theory. I don't have the heart to tell him i wanna learn something other than songs because he's nice as hell and i'm not sure if he knows all the things someone like the chappers does :(

I had a guitar teacher that just showed me covers at one point.
He lasted 2 weeks until I got fed up with cover songs and he admitted he didn't know anything about theory.
Went back to self-teaching afterwards.
Any tips for the guitarist that wants to try self-teaching, or is strapped for cash and unable to afford a teacher?
OtherRealmer 9 months ago
@OtherRealmer Sure I have some tips, first write down everything that you don't know because you will need to see the big picture in order to form a plan.
In the following order go look up, google, Youtube where ever you can the following:
Open chords, pentatonic scales, blues licks, Interval naming, intervalic recognition, the diatonic "major" scale, harmonising the major scale, the chord scale, naming chords, the caged system, modal application, reading rhythm notation ;-)

I really like your idea of a tailor-made video :) i'd be interested in trying that. Skype lessons themselves are not that great... :P

So what path should I tread?
anshumanchaube95 9 months ago

I need help with soloing, the speed parts (sweeping and string skipping) any tips Rob? Thanks
chickenoncheese 9 months ago
@chickenoncheese and I gets stuck sometimes and don't know where to go with my song/solo :-(
chickenoncheese 9 months ago
@chickenoncheese For unsolicited advice: Take the song and put it in Audacity (free program, very user friendly) and slow it down to half speed using the tempo tool (this makes the song sound the same just slower, doesn't effect pitch) then play along to it and slowly speed the song back up to normal. One at full speed, start using a metronome to get it laser precise.
