  • can i grow garlic in a bucket indoor during the summer

  • interesting vid,thanks !

  • i only planted mine in march, it said this on the packet. theyve already started growing, does this mean they wont form bulbs?

  • @stemvis1 Hi. I believe that the garlic requires cold weather to start the chemical reaction that makes the clove that you planted split into multiple cloves. So it will surely form a bulb but that bulb may be one single clove if it's not been cold enough for the split to occur. At least, this is how I understand it.

  • i have 2 garlic plants in my garden they were from a food store like walmart, they are growing nice, cant wait to harvest them , i will be planting a lot more next time

  • never mind, i just saw your reply below! i try not to read comments because a lot of the times its well you never know what you get. i am planting garlic, thanks dave.

  • thanks for your lovely video - of all the growing garlic videos, yours was the most sinmple and helpful. its mid-October and i wanted to know if its too late to plant garlic? tks.

  • very nice and complete method

    thanx

can you tell us plz how to growing and harvesting the ginger

  • is facto brunt a ds9 refrence?

  • @mywootgarden heh, I'm afraid it's not Ferengi-related. It's just a purpose misspelling of the spoonerism of "Back to Front"

  • @davedupplaw oh lol i played on online game with the name wnhaimtee white name as colourd names where more experienced players.. anyways im declaring your name is now ferengi related as it has sparked a ds9 related commentary i dub thee De Facto Brunt!

  • Can you leave it out side over the winter even though it will be under the freezing temperature?

Or does the temperature matter at all?

  • @matte957 The chemical reaction that makes the cloves split and form a bulb requires very cold temperatures. That's why they say you should plant in October and leave it out over the winter.

  • Do you cut the flowers off?

  • @StarkFelinity Mind didn't flower before the leaves went brown.

  • thanks alot man

  • Thanks! We planted garlic this winter and can't wait to harvest it. I was glad to see you showed when it's ok to pick it. Can't wait!

  • Thanks for the video very informative. I wonder if you can help me? I planted some garlic last october and 12 have managed to survive the brutal winter we had this year. But I'm worried as the plants are only 6 inches high max and as far as I know they should be ready by the end of march/start of april. The leaves seem to have started to get thicker and wider in the last forthnight so maybe I should be patient and hang in till the end of April? What do you think?

Anyway thanks again for the vid

  • @fistikuffs Hey. April sound very early for lifting garlic. I have found in the past that garlic planted in October will be ready about June, although it does of course depend on the variety. However, April seems very early. I would be patient. Leave them to grow until the leaves start going brown. They tell you themselves that they're ready. I would say that 6" is probably normal for so early.

  • @davedupplaw Thanks for the quick response. Looks like patience will be a virtue here. Thanks for the advice. I'll post back when I hopefully have a successful harvest!!

  • Cant wait to see how my garlic plants end up.

They have been in the ground for almost 3 months now. They should be ready for harvest end of March or early April hopefully.

  • Thanks buddy !!!

  • From America: Wow, the miracle of video and internet is awesome, I get to listen to nice people all over the world--in your case, the UK.

Thanks for the video, it was very easy to see the cloves, for instance, and how they break off the bulb for planting. Other vid's had taught that, but their visual quality was so bad I wasn't exactly sure what they were talking about.

Thanks for sharing your teaching gift, and love for gardening with us. It was definitely "user-friendly."

  • Do you have to buy special garlic bulbs, or can you use like store bought garlic ?

  • I believe you can use store bought garlic but they are unlikely to be as good as buying some proper growing garlic. This is usually due to the hybrids they use that don't grow on well, but I know people who have tried it and have grown some bulbs, although they were small. I recommend finding a place near you that sells proper growing garlic bulbs, they are likely to yield a better crop.

  • This is just the information I was after! Thanks for uploading your font of knowledge!! 5*!!!

  • i have some garlic do i just leave it indoors until autumn so i can plant it or do i have to do something else..?

does it have to be left a certain time before it can be planted?

  • I have a question, how deep does the soil have to be to grow some garlic?

  • I'm not entirely sure. The roots of the garlic are no more than about 3 inches, so you'd at least need soil 3" plus the expected size of the bulb. I would guess at least 6". The problem with shallow soil will be ensuring that soil retains water and nutrients, I would guess. But I'm not a particularly good gardener, so maybe someone else watching will know the answer to your query.

  • Is it just me or is it that every gardening vid on youtube always messes up some how!! It gets agrivating!

  • So make your own - that's the advantage of YouTube! :)

  • Good video, but I would like to respectfully add that most experts say, "do not leave garlic in the sun to cure".

  • Thank you - that is wonderful seeing the garlic actually come out of the ground - I learned alot - I will try to plant some myself - thanks again!

  • What would happen say if i planted garlic now?

  • Well, they won't be very large bulbs for a start, as they haven't had the time to grow, but, unless you get a hard frost soon, it's likely they wouldn't split into cloves and the bulbs would be solid garlic - which isn't as tasty either and can't be used next year.

  • What if you were say to put them in the fridge or in the freezer for a certain time?

  • That's lateral thinking! I have no idea if that would work. Might be worth trying. They still might end up small bulbs just due to the lack of growing time. I planted mine last October and they're now about a foot tall already.

  • I've heard that the plants will flower, and you should cut the flowers off. Do you know anything about this?

  • I've read that some hard-neck varieties will produce flower shoots (called scarpes) that you should snip off if you want all the energy to go into the bulb. Apparently you can eat the flowers.

  • Thank you very much!

  • Some good tips. What variety grew the best?

  • I've grown a few varieties and none did particularly better than any other. I think it's partly because my veg patch is partly shaded, although I'm hoping to change that. These garlic here were Iberian Wight, although Solent Wight are supposed to be good UK growers. This year I've decided to try some new varieties.

  • Thanks for the reply. Got the full selection from the garlic farm to try. I suppose it depends on the soil and region too.

  • The bulbs were a bit small, maybe they were dug up a bit early?

  • he was cute! hahahahah fun to watch ;)

  • It looks very easy!
