  • PEOPLE. Michael Crawford < Gerard Butler. No argument. Gerard is WAY too harsh and gruff; The Phantom needs to be suave and sensual as well as strong and manly. Gerard simply lacks that softness in places.

Mind you, Butler seems like a nice guy (and a Scottie), so I don't hate him or anything. I just don't think he was right for the role.

Don't even get me started on Emmy Rossum as Christine.

  • One of the best romantic songs of all time:)

  • I really love what you've done here. Your so clever. I didn't think Jerald Butler have a strong enough voice to play the phanton (no disrespect to the guy-it's just my opinion. Excellent work, well done! I wonder if you could dub using Ramin Karimloo's voice now that would be epic!

  • Dude Was That Actually Necessary? Did You Really Have To Redub The Phantom's Voice???

Yes I Agree That Michael Crawford Will ALWAYS Be The Definitive Phantom But Gerard Butler Was Also Sensational In The Role For The Movie Version! No Offense Intended But It Seems A Little Disrespectful To All The Hard Work & Passion Butler Poured Into His Performance For You To Have To Do That. Again No Offense Intended!

  • @DragonHeart613 I'm sure Gerards feelings will remain unhurt

  • How dare you chance Gerard's voice that is the only part that has Deep Strength in Rage for Love

  • wHAT WAS THAT at the ending?!?!?!

  • Why, why you had to chance his voice? Gerard's voice would have suited this better D: And Raoul needs a haircut!

  • i feel so bad for the phantom.... but they make a good couple. :) I like the phantom most of all though. He makes me laugh. lol :)

  • Patrick Wilson is so handsome! Omg! Emmy is so lucky! :D one of my favo show ever, btw <3

  • Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwww... :P

  • isnt it kind of ironic how gerard butler is only here as a pretty face?

  • all this debate on who's better is stupid. it's whoever u saw first is who u think's gonna b better clearly

  • Honestly I prefer Gerard Butler. His singing to me sounds more about the Emotion than the technique. He hits the notes and does so with a much more connectable pain in his voice.

  • Crawford will always be the original Phantom, but to replace someones hard work like that? I've seen the Phantom of the Opera on stage 3 times, and I own the movie, and they are both equal, but it's just a different experience for each of them, which was what ALW and the producers wanted. They wanted to bring TPOTO to my generation ( I'm 15) and they did it spectacularly.

  • I don't think that it's Gerard's looks that makes his portrayal of the Phantom hot, it's his passion and intensity. Passion over beauty and intensity over perfection, which is what he embodies. I'm not attracted to Gerard Butler at all, but as the Phantom, you have no idea. (I'm a girl) While your editing work and dub is great, I think it's somewhat rude of you to replace his voice. The casting directors had every chance to cast Michael Crawford but chose not to, and ALW agreed. Respect that.

  • i think a deep voice suits this better

  • IT IS HIM

  • Oh man wtf the reprise wasnt from the movie I was flippin out cause phantoms sexy voice disapeared

  • haha his mouth looked silly at the end

  • My FAVORITE song from POTO

  • Crawford FTW

  • i cried when the phantom sang. this part of the movie always gets me just like the ending does 2.

  • I'm not trying to say Crawford can't sing, just that gerard sounds better in this part

  • Gerard butler sounds better than that Crawford guy, Crawford sounds like a girl singing

  • @415strunk Might be, but Crawford is and remains the Original Phantom

  • At first I did not like you dubbing the voice, but Crawford in more in my range so that was pretty awesome. thanks!

  • @phantomoftheopera91 people are in love with the ACTOR and his SINGING VOICE. your such a dumbass let people have their own fun

  • Comment removed

  • gotta say this "Michael Crawford" is fucking terrible, not to be an ass, but why ruin a great part of the movie putting a shity person's voice in.

  • I've watched this and that is NOT gerard butler's voice at the end!

  • @MonsieurWillB you are so smart

  • @phantomofopera91 Well, sarcasm aside... yes, Gerard Butler does not have a trained voice - I guess worthy of dubbing because of it. However, A.L.W. obviously was going for something else in this 2004 film - star draw-power, magnetism, call it what you will.... I do miss hearing a trained voice in the role, but understand his choice (and A.L.W. let G. B. pick Emmy Rossum, not anyone's first choice for 'Christine') Just goes to show you, Hollywood abides by a different set of rules.

  • @phantomofopera91 ohright... didnt read the description lol woops!

  • @MonsieurWillB thats waay too high to be gerard's voice

  • @MonsieurWillB its michal crawfords the original phantom thats why it says that in the description

  • @MonsieurWillB IKR \

  • whoa who's girly voice starts singing at 5:42? that is not butler's. =P

  • The phantom sings the best more than anyone in the whole movie

  • I HATE ths part:'( so heartbreaking

  • heartbreak?

  • The film is wonderful!

  • Movie sucks, gotta see it live!!!!

  • I thought the guy singing was Gerard at first, Michael Crawford is very talented, although a tiny bit out of sync. Well done tho. :)

  • @mardybummates watch the new HD version, he's much more in sink!

  • @phantomofopera91 Okay! Thanks! :) x

  • I'm so annoyed at the comments about Crawford's "inferior" singing to Butler's.

    ARE YOU FUCKING DEAF?!

  • Thanks for the dub! No one can touch MC!

  • Ok he does have a trained voice,Ii admit it and I bow to him, and I will take the risk saying, you can't compare th feelings on gerard's feelings when singing, and this actor' s feelings, it's just not similar, plus the entonation at least for me it's a little high for this part. But hey that's just my opinion.

  • I love every Phantom of the opera performance and all of its actors who do it in movies or popular plays, this is a classic and its my favorite. You can comment all you want, say its good its bad, rate it or not watch it, either way its a magnificant masterpiece whoever is singing or playing the roles.

MY FAVORITE PLAY AND NOW MY FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME. tope 3 for sure.

  • SACRILEGE I don't care if his voice is "trained". This wasn't a role for a choirboy.

It requires the voice of a MAN.

  • @foamulator This "Choirboy" was the original Phantom and the role was written for him.

  • He sings like a castratti.

  • @foamulator: And Gerard Butler sings like he's dying!

  • i love the real phantoms voice i dont care if hes not trained i love his voice

  • okay. everyone needs to calm down. gerard butler does have talent, but he is not trained. he admitted it in an interview, but he can sing. yes, michael crawford is a better singer. he has been trained. however, i do love butler as the phantom acting-wise.

  • To me, this is the scene where the Phantom sees the writing on the wall. He's ended Carlotta's career while starting Christine's, and now Christine is on the roof professing her love for a younger, far sexier suitor. She has made the choice, and the Phantom must accept it. He's waited all these years to claim her, only in vain. Yet again, he is shunned because of his looks. There is no greater heartbreak than this.

  • crying sniff sniff. christine, christine! HOW COULD YOU?!?!

  • This is where I stand on the Butler/Crawford debate. I personally think that Butler has a lovely voice- however, it is very obvious he's not trained, and you can definitely hear the strain in certain parts. Crawford, on the other hand, is very highly trained. However, his insistence on singing like a West Ender in a work that really ought to be performed bel canto annoys me beyond belief. Phantom isn't a show for belters!

  • :'( poor phantom. stupid whats-her-name.

  • For all you people saying it's 'not' dubbed at all...and that it's ruined. Michael Crawford was the original Phantom. If you knew about the play. It fits perfectly.

  • "You peopel are so stupid! So you can't sing, but many of us can, and has equally of any of these. But there is only room for a few, and hundreds don't have friends already in theatre. "

  • Sarah Brightman is undeniable and by far better than the actress. Steve Barton is also better than the actor here (love SB's voice). And what about the Phantom? Michael Crawford is actually a singer but on the other hand Butler has a rasped passioned voice that fits perfectly with the Phantom and in parts like The Point of No Return or this one he acquires all the desesperation that the character needs. However when I'm watching the film, in some songs I miss a real singer like Crawford.

  • If you're going to dub Gerard Butler's voice at least do it properly; its done very poorly here. Not that his voice needs to be dubbed anyway, he has talent to spare!

  • @musicaltheatre8 Theres an improved HD version in my channel. And i would have assumed that you can spot musical talent based off of your name. I am disappointed

  • @phantomofopera91 Ooooohh burn. Well seeing as Andrew Lloyd-Webber approved of him i'm pretty sure he must have talent. Unless he can't spot talent either of course...

  • @musicaltheatre8 It's done very well actually....you seem to think that it's just a fan dub...this is Michael Crawford the original phantom.

  • hey i know ama sound like a complete scrub or noob but..

how the hell does phantom give christine the rose?!

  • Why would you dub over Gerard Butler?

    His voice is amazing!

Michael Crawford is amazing too but his voice belongs on the stage...

  • i feel bad for the phantom of the opera

  • It isn't dubbed at all..this is the movie version. This is the actor who played Raoul. Not Gerard.

  • @HeatherEatsBabies I think you need help

  • If you had read the book you would have understood the supposed "love". She loved the "angel" with the belief that he was literally an angel. This is why she wasn't truly in love with him, rather loved him with the innocence of a gullible child. After that pity and coercion drove her to behave as if she loved him. Granted, the movie does definitely distort that.

  • how dare you ruin this wonderful movie by dubbing another man's voice over the very attractive and talented gerard butler. this is horrible and i will not stand for it. Gerard's lovely voice shall never again be "disfigured" by another's voice. good day to you sir.

  • @musicalgrl123 GASP! I wouldn't want to do anything to further disfigure the voice of the very attractive and "talented" Gerard Butler.

Oh wait.. i already did. Be sure to watch the redub in high definition. Its in my channel.

    Good day to you

  • @musicalgrl123 umm....another man? try the ORIGINAL man.

  • Christine is such a damned whore >.<

    Christine: I love you, Angel!

    Raoul: Hi.

    Christine: I love you, Raoul!

    Phantom: I love you, Christine!

Christine: I love you too, Angel!

    Raoul: *kills the Phantom*

    Christine: I love you Raoul!

  • I think they should have made Gerald Butler more... ugly? He was too pretty for this. Honestly, I was hoping since it was hollywood he would have looked terribly ugly. Instead we got someone who looks like he got a sunburn.

Regardless I love this song. I like how warm and loving it is. I think this song is what makes Raoul's character. Someone who wants to protect and love Christine. While the Phantom's is music of night, which is mysterious and haunting (perfect for his character). I love it!

  • I feel so sad when the phantom starts singing and crushes the rose x :'(

  • @MissSinger2000 i agree. i cried :(

  • everytime i hear michael sing this song, i wanna jump through my computer and hug him, thats how great of a singer and actor he is. I do like Gerard Butler in the movie, but Michael Crawford will always be my Phantom :) if you agree give me a thumbs up

  • What are y'all talkin about Gerald Butler Is soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much better for the part... He acually sounds like the phantom... Not to mention he's HOTT

  • @jelliwhoose .. and that is what is wrong with people. To say that he's HOTT shows how immature you are. The phantom was not supposed to be hott. The movie was a prime example of hollywoodifying an otherwise perfect story.

  • @phantomofopera91 They probably did it to appeal to a wider audience (?). However, you can't deny that Gerard Butler did a good job. Listen to just the music, even--he nails the emotion: madness, sorrow, everything, he does it pretty well. That's my opinion, anyway.

  • @phantomofopera91

I saw phantom of the opera on broadway and i still found the phantom hott. but thats cuz of his mask, its cuz he's so mysterious for me.

  • @phantomofopera91 Hear, hear

  • @jelliwhoose he really is hot. plus raul (sp?) is an awesomely cool name haha

  • Stupid Raoul. Team Phantom.

  • this part deffinatelly makes me sad about the phantom!

  • raul is better for this part than the phantom is later in point of no return

  • i love the all i ask of you better with raul then with the phantom in the poin of no return

  • most romantic song in the entire movie!

  • the phantom shares something with the raul/raoul, they both have extremely large noses i thought this fact was interesting, and i just felt like pointing it out

  • Love this!

  • the phanotms face is georgeous

  • So much better then Gerald's version. I kept expecting him to shout "OI!" and headbutt someone the whole movie.

  • Great job mixing the movie and stage imagery. Thanks!

MC is the best actor and dramatic vocalist, but his voice lacks the quality needed to project the sexuality, evil and seductiveness of the role. Still, he deserves his enormouse Phandom. Too bad the film failed to capture the magic of the stage, black and white would have helped so I'll turn off the color next time I view the DVD.

  • This is awesome!!! I remember watching the movie for the first time and as it panned away at the "Yooooooooooooouuuuuuuuuuuuu!!" thinking: Ok if he can do the laugh I can hopefully put up with the rest of the movie listening to him. So the laugh? ...the laugh... the... WHERE'S THE MANIACAL LAUGHTER!?!?!

    This makes me happy! :D

  • is there a longer version of this? with the "raoul ive seen him, and ill never forget those eyes" bit?

  • <3 Phantom

  • Colm Wilkinson is actually my favorite. Then Michael Crawford.

    It's just a personal taste.

I wish they'd had Crawford do the movie though. I heard he wanted to, but ALW wanted a young cast.

  • I love Michael Crawfords voice, but I think if you do the movie version you have to have Gerald Butlers voice for it. I'm just saying. Cause no doubt Michael is a great singer, and probably one of the best, but for the movie, I think you shouldn't change the voices.

  • Honestly, no true self respecting PotO fan would prefer anyone but Micheal Crawford...yes Gerard Butler is more camera friendly, yes he IS in fact a good actor. and Davis Gaines is great, as well, John Owen Jones is alright and all...But in the end only one person can come out on top: The Original-Micheal Crawford...and if you did your homework you would know that Micheal did not even have to audition for it, Andrew Lloyd Webber said specifically he wanted Micheal.

  • as a matter of fact, i did know that. But he specifically wanted him after his then wife told him about michael after hearing him doing a vocal warmup. At the time, he was already in the show, but as a chorus member. I have to disagree with your whole "no self respecting poto...etc" thing. I think he was an alright singer, but just not fit for the role as the phantom even though he was the original.

  • and besides, andrew also said that gerard butler is exactly how he imagined the phantom would sound like. So i love andrews music, but his choice in singers are terrible.

  • yes and that's what makes it great. Gerard is an excellent actor btu not a musician. I don't think this part should necessarily have gone to MC. he's old and hasn't been in performing shape for awhile. I think Ramin Karimloo would be an amazing choice and he should've gotten the part imho

  • honestly i prefer gerard butler myself there's something about M.C that irk's me i dont know hes a alright singer and actor i dont know what it is i just cant stand him...

  • Agreed, Michael Crawford for the win. I'm a singer and actually get bashed when I use Crawford's style as opposed to Butler's --- it's mostly the kids that don't know that there was a musical theater release before the movie...

  • Any true self respecting PotO fan wouldn't be you.

  • i prefer Davis Gaines over all of them. John Owen Jones comes in second. Like you guys, this is just my opinion.

  • I prefer gerard bulter and srry for the 200000000000000000000000000000 times better thing they are both amazing but my opinion gerard is way better and dont swear at me for stating my opinion (but the other time it wasnt right but i kinda deservred it)

BTW Gerard is wayy hotter but that doesnt matter

  • I agree that it is possible to like both Butler and Crawford. personalyy, I think that Butler has a better voice for the rough songs (down once more for instance) and Crawford is better at the soft Ballads (Music of the Night for instance).

  • best part of the song starts at 5:30

  • Why is everyone thumbing down other people's comments just because they like certain actor better than another? I mean, there is no right or wrong answer when it comes to people's tastes. Personally, I like John Owen Jones' Phantom the best, but if someone likes Gerard's performance or Micheal's performance more, than that's fine with me. After all, it's their opinion, and their entitled to it.

  • because the comment is a stupid assed comment

  • You're wrong.

  • Here's the main thing about this, and all musical adaptations on film. Most of the time, each actor works for their medium. Michael Crawford's performance wouldn't have transfered well to the screen, and Gerard Butler's wouldn't have been very good on the stage.

  • wow are you fucking kidding me? you shouldn't even call yourself a fan of this. Fuck you, you don't know shit. Learn how to fucking type you dumbshit douche. "Michael might of won awards but that not the people who get to decide who wins cuz garentee then gerard would of won more" what the fuck does that even mean? Are you retarded?

  • sorry that i stated my opinion jerk

btw dont swear it only proves my jerk more

  • love the phantom ^^

he should have been with christine!!!

cant stand that other bloke :P

  • Ah, if only, if only.

  • i really loved patrick wilson, he had a really good voice!!!

  • Although I agree that Michael Crawford is noticably a better singer than Gerard, I fully believe that Gerard's voice is way more fitting for the Phantom. Michael's is just too high. Gerard's deep and smooth voice is a much better fit for a character that is dark and mysterious.

  • wrong, the phantom's voice is supposed to be "angelic"

  • Yah? Well he missed that mark too.

  • it's not about whether the character is dark and mysterious, it's about what vocal range the music was written for, and the part of the Phantom is written for a tenor, which gerard butler is not, no matter how much i love him as an actor, he was not vocally suited to the part.

  • poor phantom :(

  • In my opinion Michael Crawford is much better than Gerald Butler. Gerald butler was actually flat at a couple points. I wont deny though he put good emotion into the music.

  • OMG ur deaf

  • Wonderful movie. Great story, lovely music

  • Fighting on youtube. Cute ;]

  • youre a sickly wimpy mouse. every time i read that comment i will find myslef yawning. if you dont like this video, then dont watch and dont post mean comments. if you dont have anything nice to say, then dont say anything at all.

  • i love phantom.

  • Cont'd...I and a ton of other women would like to be Christine along side Michael one day! Your the loser"rich75904" along with Butler. Plus Michael won the awards and helped this show to make more money then the film version ever did. So tell me who the loser is. I agree "k1ttz", Michael is much prettier and so much more awesome in everyway! Thank you for doing this "phantomofopera91"! Your Awesome and I can't wait along with the other fans to see Michael this weekend. Hes such a great guy!

  • Thanks for dissing Michael "linprs". What is your problem with Michael and why the hell couldn't you say a damn thing about Michaels performance or singing in this video. karimloo isn't in this video and it's sad that you and your daughter haven't bothered to ever see Michael in Phantom or anything else. He is English like you and one of the all around greatest performers your country has ever produced. Plus Michael originated the role of the Phantom and has won a ton of awards for it.

  • thank you so much the proper version this was my sisters song for her first dance at her wedding it was sensational i cried! :)

  • ESPECTACULAR!!!

  • WONDERFUL!!!

  • 00:40

  • whats that?

  • Sorry, was doing it for a friend who hasn't seen the movie, so I wanted to eliminate any spoilers and just highlight the song (00:40 is when it begins).

Thank you for the video though :} It's one of my favorites of the Phantom Of The Opera selection available on YouTube. And the song is one of my personal favorites from the musical.

Nice editing Job :} Thanks again~

  • Thank you!

  • @phantomofopera91 it's brilliant, you cannot dislike Phantom of The Opera! :D it is too good.

  • wat bout it?

  • YOU REDUBBED THE ENTIRE THING WITH MICHAEL CRAWFORD!!!??? I LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just came across this video randomly and it has totally made my day!!!!!

  • thank you!!

  • @phantomofopera91 did u make the last like 20 seconds, from the actuall play?

  • @girlsxred Yes. The stage version of all i ask of you reprise is longer at the end, so i decided to fill it with footage of the stage version. As you can see, the chandelier falls at the end of Act 1.

  • @phantomofopera91 yea, i think it was cool, i was just not completely sure so i just wanted to know

  • the first all ias kof you is wat i was talkin bout of course not the poor reprise(down an octave and shouting)

  • the only song done well in the whole film.

    NOTHIN on the stage show.

  • I agree. Every scene the phantom was in got ruined because of the bad voice and the overacting. Yes, he acted well with his voice but someone better trained voice could do that as well and also hit the right notes. Bad casting.

Whenever it was Christine and Raoul singing it was quality though.

  • I disagree,I prefer michael Crawford but I will admit Gerard Butler gets a lot of slack. Considering he wasnt proffesionally trained he did a really good job

  • poor poto but he shouldnt kill people

  • what was at the end?

  • The Chandelier crash

  • i mean, is it any film?
