  • The Stereo People

    Tivoli Restaurant

    A&A

    Sam The Record Man

    CIBC

    Zanzibar - LOL

    The BIG Slice! - Yum

I just compared this to google street view. Its like night and day. Totally unrecognizable. So many memories of walking downtown and all of these obscure stores. When this came on at night I was up too late and drifting in and out of sleep probably for an all nighter for school the next day

  • Sharon Lee Williams sings the song @ 2:12.

  • Thank you for this. This really brought back memories.

  • Who is the vocalist @2:12 with I Need You Now?

  • @nicka727 it's really hard to get info for this show

  • Did Detroit have a version of night drive radamail?

  • Spent many an early morning on the weekend, curled up with a cup of coffee on the couch watching this. loved this stuff!!! Please post more if you have them!

  • Quality

  • :52 - The Neon Rainbow at Yorkdale station, that got serviced once and then was abandoned.

  • One Person is a day walker

  • I LOVE THIS.......I USE TO TAPE IT ON VHS AT 2AM IN THE MORNING!!!

I WOULD WAIT UP FOR IT JUST TO FEEL LIKE I'M TAKING A NIGHT TOUR THROUGHOUT THE CITY........THE GOOD TIMES=)

  • @TDJonesful Yea i would sneak downstairs to watch it late at night

  • i so remember this show being on tv...seeing guido basso and archie alleyne and other jazz notables credited...if you were close to a canadian station in the wee small hours, it would come on...way better than the old test patterns...someone should try this idea out again...maybe a dvd of these shows, or something similar, maybe with some modern smooth jazz as a backdrop...it's amazing how a program so minimal and obscure can have such a lasting and calming effect on me and many others.

  • Please someone can tell me the singer and the title of the background song?

    THANK YOU SO MUCH

  • Yes! It's Night Walk. Man, I've got all the music recorded from all the Night Ride episodes. I never thought I'd see these videos again. Somebody's gotta have all these videos. @michaeltravis, how many of these videos have you got? Please let me know.

  • Wow, I used to fall asleep to this every night when I was going to high-school. Brings back sleepy memories :)

  • I remember these soft jazzy vids of the city. they looked alot like what i saw after i got off work working for CFMT 's "The All-Night Show" back in 1980, thanks for postings.

  • I spent allot of time on the road. When ever in Ontario I used to watch this show.

Is there a place I could get a good copy of these Vids?

    cheers

    dr.

  • Man I miss my old Toronto..it feels like I am living in a foreign country now..New York'er Larry's ,Voodoo, Spadina Hotel, Crash and burn room, the edge

  • RIP Sam the Record Man, Funland, The Coronet Theatre, The Eaton's Centre Cineplex, Cinema 2000...etc etc....

  • I want a couple of hours of this. Can whoever has it put it up somewhere? I can make space on one of my servers ...

  • The M+M poster in the window of A&A is from 1986, so this is post 1984.

  • Hello! What is name the song? I need it now! Please jejejeje... Thanks

  • wow, that PizzaPizza has been there a long time.

  • There's a rainbow in Toronto, where the Maritimers are bold...

  • someone needs to set this to Burial or something

  • I agree with Brett, I thought I'd never see this again, I almost thought I made it up in my head. My friend Jesse and I used to stay up late night in hopes that this would air because we never knew when it would come on. We were only kids when this was on the air and we loved it. Great idea and it was relaxing to watch. Smooth Jazz as someguy walked around downtown Toronto.

Ahh the good ol'days...I miss them...

  • This takes me back to my blissful, half-delirious childhood insomnia. I love this show.

  • How many of us born in the 80's/very early 90's in Southern Ontario were conceived to this? Just asking

  • @lucite11 lots

  • Wow, did I spend an inordinate amount of time awake at 4 in the morning or what? I must've seen the whole series (Night Ride I liked better though).

  • Watch this with Google Maps Strettview side by side and compare 196 with 2010, almost everything has changed,

  • great video ! I remenber watching this every night,it was better than most of the crap T.V nowadays!

  • Who wants to walk in real life? POV is the way of the future.

  • FULL SHET

  • Sweet Baby Jesus! I remember this!! LOL!! When I was a kid, I'd secretly wake up at 4am, just to watch it on the TV in my bedroom. Great memories. :D

  • @babygiraffe123 Yea me too i would sneek Downstairs to watch this but one time I got to watch it in it's fullness

  • u should remake this

  • I remember watching this before i got my drivers licence, I just loved this show even though most of the times i fell asleep to it. lol

    thanks for adding!!

  • Time for ItalCine on CFMT. Maybe see some bush.

  • I remember this although I think night ride that was filmed out the top of a limo was first. We would always watch it after we got back from the elbow or Lee's or the brunie.

  • I have the equipment to remake this in modern-day toronto.... but im afraid Global would sue me for taking their idea... lol.

What do you guys think? I know there are TONNES of people who want this show back on the air... or even on YouTube in HD.

  • @teedot I was in TO the other week, I'm from Hamilton, and I was thinking about taking a trip one night and just wandering around with a camera to make my own Night Walk. Also, I don't think Global would care.

  • @CTM1978 If only there were more of this footage still around. Even still, what I think would be really cool is to re-walk some of the routes that Night Walk/Night Ride took way back in they day and capture what they are like today, then do a bit of a comparasion video.

Like this clip, start at Yorkdale station, hop on the TTC and continue to downtown.

  • @teedot I like the idea of doing a comparison video but there's so many great little area's of Toronto that I'd like to go all around and put together some new stuff.

  • @teedot absolutely!

  • Wow i never knew that cool!!!

  • I'd much rather be watching this then commercials for the "ab-cicle' this was awesome!

  • Oh my god...how many countless Friday and Saturday nights after clubbing would I stumble home, open the fridge and grab a bite to watch this

  • I remember watching this late nights in Detroit, MI. Always thought it was a great concept to kick back & watch the streets come alive.

  • Now I feel like staying up late until O Canada comes on :)

  • oh my god ! I have been looking for this for ages. Anyone with complete versions of the entire series ? Please post.

  • The other nightmoves vids got pulled off youtube that sucks hopefully they will be reposted

  • Why does YOUTUBE do that i mean the videos are so old that the show is'nt on tv anymore. I mean if you look at the copyright on the NightMoves vids it did'nt say what the company's name was.

  • I never comment on youtube videos but I have to for this, amazing find, I couldn't even remember what this was called but I'm amazed to see it again. This brings back interesting memories of being a kid with insomnia.

  • all of these need to be recompiled/remastered and put on dvd or blu-ray. great stuff!!

  • nice grab. wow. never thought I'd see this again. I wasn't a prisoner, but a teenager with bad insomnia. aint youtube grand? now I'd love to see some clips of the "All Nite Show" (?) from channel 47, featuring Chuck the security guard.

  • i used to watch this when i couldn't sleep back when it first aired. i've been missing this all these years this is great! thanks for posting! do you happen to have the other one where they would go for a drive instead of a walk? was it called night ride?

  • yes the videos were great as i would be cruising downtown in my custom cruiser. and my band of fellow drivers would be driving up and down yonge street with me and the old memories would return. that era was a fun time. yes me, my custom coach and the leonards and their custom coaches and cruisers too.....then we'd take a ride over to donut world and have a plump coke and relax and do it all over again..........guido basso on temperance street . ooooooooooooooooooooooohhhhh

  • Been looking for this show for way too long. Good memories. Thank you to the uploader for putting this on you tube so I could see this show again. I honestly thought I never would see this show again. I loved watching this show late at night when I was about 13 or 14 years old. I enjoyed the music and all the random shots of downtown Toronto.

  • a great glimpse at the city before i was born......please put that rainbow back at yorkdale station

  • Wow I remember when I was a kid I would sneak downstairs from bedroom just to watch this, There was just something about it, Find this clip of this is so nostalgic for me the hair on the back of my neck actually is standing up, I am from Hamilton and I just love the old late night programming from T.O especially the birds flying threw Canada to the Canadian national anthem when Global was going to sign off at 4:00am, Thank you for this great video.

  • Me too Mattblaze!!!!

  • what a cult following! i used to pass out watching them drive all around the city at weird hours including an episode where they ended up driving down this dead-end and u see some strange looking people step out in front of them, then suddenly they're back on yonge street, mellow jazz playing the whole time LMAO. !!!!

  • Night Ride came out in 1986. I remember waking up early enough (around 3 or 4am), watching this with the volume way down in my bedroom. It would be over by 5 or 6am and be awake the rest of the day.

  • What a surprise to find this on YouTube!!! I actually had a couple of VHS tapes full of this, but they got lost in a move. I have a half tape of NightWalk!

I LOVED this. I called Global to ask the name of the band performing, but have forgotten. They are perfect for this!

Thank-you VERY much for posting this!

    500 stars and Favorited!

  • The rio was a pretty much all nite movie grindhouse basically, open to all kinds of cinemaphiles and sleaze looking for a place to sleep or umm pleasure themselves. It closed early 1990's...sad sad day...

  • oh god............so nice..........thank u

  • oh my god!

    how sweet

i was so obsessed with seeing this again i contacted global a couple years back by email and even a written letter trying to get them to bring back this show.

how does someone even have footage of this????

  • I loved watching this late at night as a child. If anyone has this for download or as a torrent, please let me know!

  • you have no idea how much this made my day, year and christmas.i have been looking for info on these for years.i remember watching them and loving it but never remembered the name etc.i never thought i would see these again.i only wish i had them on a dvd somehow.i was a boring teen i guess.i could watch for hours and these are how i learned to love jazz music.

  • I can't believe I found this, I have missed this show and especially the music for years.

Yes, I wished they make a cd. I used to feed my son in the wee hours and watch this to keep me awake. I loved it for some strange reason. The music is still very sentimental and brings back alot of memories. I'll ask Global to put out a song and band list or a CD. So very strange it's here, thank you for posting and thanks to youtube for making it possible.

  • This is great I can remember after long walks home from the bar when they closed at 1 am , or after work , you knew you were up late when this came on . Wish they had dvd's of this it is something I would buy .

  • Whats that place at 7:12? The Rio? Was that some kind of movie theatre?

  • omg! All the songs are coming back to me word for word as I hear them, like yesterday!

    Again - Thank you poster!!!!!

  • I loved watching this as a kid. I'm from Hamilton and Toronto seemed so exotic.

  • years and years, when i couldn't sleep at night i would sneak downstairs with my brother and we would sit on the floor about a foot from the tv screean and watch this, years later i would say "do you remember this show, night ride?" and everyone would respond "oh yeah, with the talking car" lol. I finally realize i didn't imagine it.

  • You and me both!!!!

  • I did the exact same thing with my bro. I'm from a small town about 150 km from Toronto and it seemed so mysterious and wonderful to me. I thought, that must be what it's like to be an adult . . .

  • I used to watch this with my brother too when I couldn't sleep. I didn't know that it was such a universal experience...

  • I used to be able to pick up Global TV here in Rochester in '89, and I loved to watch this. Unfortunately, they showed it around 4AM, while I was trying to get ready for work. The music almost had me snoozing off while standing up!! Love it, tho...

  • These are pictures of a lost T.O, it all started to go in the shiter around 1987. Many parts of T.O. are seedy and dangerous

  • it's actually less seedy now than it was before due to all the redevelopment.

  • Do you have the full clips of Night Walk and Night Ride??

  • Always wanted to see him walk past some prostitutes and then see the camera get yanked aside into an alley where he gets mugged.

  • LMAO!!!!!! Thought i'd never see this again, i remember staying up as a kid watching this when i couldn't sleep at night.

  • My friends in high school never got why I liked this show so much. I just found it such a welcome glimpse at a city I considered exotic at the time!

  • Nice! I've been looking for this...never thought to check youtube :p

  • Sad story! I was in college pulling all nighters to get my assignments done when I watched this repeatedly in 86-88. Thanks for posting it Michael. :)

  • Thanks but think of the building is geting good use out of it!

  • Is'nt YOUTUBE wonderfull!!!!

  • Worked late at the restaurant, shower, lie down and tune into Global those late nights.

Ten dream about moving to the big city! Thanks for this! I have these recorded somewhere too. I should see if I can dig them up.

  • Awsome. Thanks for showing this to me. I've been looking for this for ever. Brings back great memories.

  • I remember Night Ride would appear before, or after this show. You could never pay a crew enough to do this kind of show today - too many drive-by shootings in the entertainment district! Ahh, what great memories this brings back.

  • Wow, my brother and I used to watch this show when we were like 15 or 16. I think the contemporary equivalent is the weather channel. Anyway, I can't believe someone has a copy of this!

  • altogether now: "we're getting to the moment we've been waiting for..."

  • we're getting ready now! to make love!

    so move a little closer...

  • so I can see what's in your eyes before you kiss me and ask for more...

  • Thought I was the only crazy one that actually enjoyed these...just love it and hope Global puts these in DVD format one day.

  • Great jazz! I use to watch this to help with my insomnia. Had to have someone tape it for me since I don't live near Toronto anymore. Hope they release it too on DVD.

  • But the big spinning discs on the Yonge street side will remain there - they have been designated historic landmarks.

  • yes Toronto has announced that the classic Sam The Record man is now a historic landmark. so that means no bulldoser can touch the building.

  • update, all, in case you haven't heard...Ryerson U has now bought the building and it will become a library/student centre. Fab idea!

  • Yea I totally agree!!!

  • Yes good idea Ryerson U owns a piece of Toronto History. True Story my Dad and some of his friends back then went to Sam's sometimes to buy records!!!

  • OK, ummm, Sam's is now pretty much gone - spinning discs and all. If I'm not mistaken, it was City TV that reported the 'designated historic landmark' status last year, but I've watched it come apart, piece by hallowed piece. Am I mistaken about the landmark status, or have we been sold out once again by city council?

    BOOOOOOOO!!!!!

  • Update Sam The record man Main store is now closed!!!!!

  • i was there when they took it apart. canada almost nothing left to call its own, HBC, tim hortons. And now toronto's Sam the record man. What a damn shame.

  • VEry nice video, toronto was beautiful back then i wish theyd keep it like the old days i don't like all that "hip" fashion makeover of our city. Additionally great music, jazz is the music of our city fits in perfectly.

  • There's probably a whole generation of kids that were conceived to these shows!!!

  • Oh god yes!

Nice to know I'm not the only one who realized that.

  • Absolutely BRILLIANT! I don't think Global had any idea that so many people actually ENJOYED this show. Now if only they could drop an hour of Chat Line infomercials and put this on again.

  • I can't believe i found this! I also can't believe how many other people *in their* youth watched this late at night just like i did. I remember waking up in grade 6 in the middle of the night just to watch this program. This totally makes me think of David Lynch - does anyone think he may have stayed up on a late night in Toronto and was inspired by this show? ;) This show really spoke to me, just the street and the music. <3

  • This is wonderful! Around this time Global had just installed a broadcast tower in Eastern Ontario and watching anything all the way from Toronto was a novelty. When I was around 8 or 9 I'd stay up all night watching Global. Every once in a while one of the songs from this show pops into my head...♫♪♫"Ooh yes! This must be love."♫♪♫

  • Update! Jazz 91.1FM in T.O. features Joe Sealy on Saturday mornings. For those who remember, Joe was one of the musicians featured on the video.

  • I thought I would never see this again. Just did a random search for it and it was here on youtube (who wouldve thought?) Very cool indeed but I should point out that this is actually Toronto in the year 1984 and there is proof of this in the car scene when it passes by a theatre. The movie Blood Simple is playing at it. It was made by Joel and Ethan Coen (Fargo, The Big Lebowski)it came out in '84. Plus I remember this earlier than 88.

  • I stand corrected. I got the date from IMDB, although it does seem like I watched this in high school, not college.

  • How did you get it to come up on the IMDB because I can't figure it out can you help me??

  • @michaeltravis How may I ask did you get the date from IDMB??

  • Unbelievable!!!!This used to be one of my fave shows when I was 13 or so and battling hormone charged insomnia...on Friday nights I would actually stay up to catch the entire sequence. It's a bloody brilliant piece of video.I'd love to see more. Now I can get my Night Ride fix anytime, though there's nothing like being up at 4am with a plate of McCain superfries 'n' ketchup. It has a kind of Statler Bros.'Flowers on the Wall' feeling to it: "Don't tell me,I've nothing to do..."

  • I had only sleep-hazed memories of this show until now, and I feel like very few remember it at all. At that age, I always felt like I had happened upon a secret broadcast, some Videodrome signal, but watching it now seems far less insidious than I remember.

  • This is the best thing ever! I haven't seen this since I was like 5 or 6! I really used to love this show. Smooth. Velvet smooth.

  • Wow...such fantastic memories. Great music, wonderful visuals.

Is there any more of this out there? I'd love to see the whole episodes again!!!

  • You officially rule!...I used to watch this show when I was young on my TV in my room when I couldnt sleep. I've searched far and wide for any shred of it's existence, and was beginning to think I'd dreamed it up. Thanks for the memories and post any more videos you have.

  • Outstanding!

  • The subway station looks so clean!

Nice to see some footage of Arc en Ciel actually running. All I could find before were still photos.

  • OMG, I can't believe I found this here...so many memories of staying up late on Friday nights with my friend Bill back in 1986

  • man this this classic stuff this is jazz at it's best

  • i've always wanted to see this! thanks! never knew that the glass ceiling in the yorkdale subway used to light up like a pinball machine.

  • Funnily enough, I really miss seeing this on Global in the wee hours of the morning. Any time insomnia took over, there was always Night Walk/Drive/Moves/Music and their soothing sounds. Thanks for posting this trip down late-night memory lane.

  • Hey! this really brings back some great memories of insomnia and writing into the late-night hours while leaving the TV on Global after "Kung-Fu" ended at 2AM. Great trip back in time! Thanks for posting!!!
