It is cheating. I don't have the rulebook to hand so I can't quote directly but it certainly contravenes the spirit of the sport. If a fighter is judged to have deliberately spat out his mouthpiece the referee should continue the fight so he gains no advantage. It may be an intelligent tactic but it definitely isn't fairplay.
