What an unusual voice....I absolutely love it....a great version of this wonderful song...just imagine how many covers threre are of it.....there must be dozens and dozens which shows how it touches millions of us..Wheat fields..junkyards..clothes lines..trains..love and missing someone and hobos in a train yard...the ultimate road song....'City of new Orleans'...is just as moving..just as iconic and wistful and so very very American..thanks for posting this....from England.
You can't go wrong with this song. Lucinda does a great job, but I still prefer to hear John do it himself, either solo live or with a band (Bennie Martin, Sammy Bush and Pig Robins). There are a couple of versions by John on youtube.
Really like this version though my favourite version is by Brian Setzer who sang it live on his 2001 European tour with his 3 piece band "68 Comeback special".
this is the best version of this song I've heard. It played through the credits of the movie and I searched to find it. Thanks so much for posting it. When I hear it i'm at peace.
Good song for towing the ol race car home after a rough & tough night at the track pickup truck windows down, nice cool breeze blowing through, the trailer riding just right over the bumps & around the curves, Lucinda Williams coming through the am radio, maybe fading a bit hear & there, w the sound of a distant summer rainstorm out in the night somewhere, as the chains gently rattle in time as we get closer & closer to home
This would have been a great cover version of a great song. But Lucinda Williams leaves out the entire third verse, which may be the best verse in the entire song. That said, it's still pretty good. But why did she leave out the third verse?
Why can't I buy this song on itunes? Does anybody know where I could buy it, or even the Talledega Nights soundtrack?

Why is there no more music of this quality?
Correct.

Call me sexist, but the words of this song are profoundly masculine and sound faintly silly when sung by a woman.
