  • @spatauser il re dei bassi!

  • One of the most gorgeous voices ever bestowed on a human being.

  • Awesome Don Basilio, he makes it look effortless, LOL @ 1:26.

  • Good night, Cesare

  • what a wonderful and real Italian bass voice! :D

  • Grandissimo!!! Il miglior basso della storia!

  • @Jackomel88 è vero.

  • pensate che in quegli anni io a Macerata l'ho sentito in Don Carlo..una cosa indicibile

  • Without question the best of the best.

  • I was there, 29 years ago.

    Incredible!!!!!

  • Che cu... ehm fortuna! ;p

  • SUPER!!!

  • Increìble!!!

  • Extraordinario Hermosa voz.

  • espectacular, un maestro

  • Great CESARE SIEPI...superb!!!

  • On the old Met Opera website was a review of Chaliapin's first Basilio at the Met c. 1910 His Calunia was a scandal. He ran around the stage like crazy. He rolled his eyes and waved his arms. He jumped on Bartolo. He turned the aria into a whole show, and drove the critics wild. They said it was the goofiest stuff they had ever seen at the Met.

  • Cesare Siepi -- very memorable voice!

  • Too bad there's not a video of Siepi and the great buffo Fernando Corena together. They were quite a team in "Don Giovanni" and "Barbiere"!

  • When I was a kid learning about opera, Corena was my favorite. I used to listen to his recording of Bartolo's aria from "Barbiere" over and over. By the way, who is conducting here? Too slow!

  • Many years ago in South America I had the thrill of singing Don Basilio to Corena's Dr. Bartolo. Having grown up with his voice on records and the Met broadcasts it was a memorable night for me to share the stage with this great artist. You might be interested to know that in those rehearsals Corena had a whole set of scatological lyrics(in Italian) that rhymed perfectly with what Rossini wrote. He was a brilliant linguist and a very generous artist.

  • Thanks so much for sharing this. What a thrill it must have been to do the other comic role alongside a living legend!

  • Assolutamente il basso più grande sotto tutti i punti di vista, grande Cesare Siepi

  • Such a deep voie.

    Impressing!

I'm on the point of saying that this is the best performance of don basilio. if anyone could give me some informations/links/posts about other don basilio's?

Till now i think this is the best ever

  • In my opinion nobody will ever beat Nicolai Ghiaurov although it's really hard to choose between those two great basses.

    Thanks for uploading this version.

  • As a young man, I had the pleasure of seeing Mr Siepi at the Met quite a few times (standing room was only $2.50-$3.50 in those days) & he was never less than totally magnificent. Never the slightest sign of strain, never a break in the legato, never a hair flat or sharp or anything other than fabulous. I count myself blessed & honestly don't think I'll see his like again in my lifetime.

  • Cesare siepi is the best.

  • superb! bravo! grazie cesare!

  • Such a voice, such an artist...In addition to those; very handsome man!

  • Grandissimo basso: voce splendida, tecnica meravigliosa e controllo totale. Straordinario!

  • As expected,he does a superb job. What else can you ask from a legendary basso cantante? One question;any idea as to the identity of the buffo doing Dr. Bartolo?

  • great basilioooooooo

  • Great Don Basilio, he put a couple of tempo touches that I didn't care for but the interpretation is Great.

Thank you for sharing this jewel.

  • Thank you for the video. CP Vienna

  • This role is almost like singing Mephisto in some ways...

  • Don't know.Yep, they don't do drug tests at work...

  • Well, makes it sound rather good!

  • What do they snore? Apparently they don't drug test in Opera Houses!

  • On those days, it was common to snort Tobacco.

  • @dustmondo45

    Tobacco.

  • So glad that I saw and heard him life in this role!

  • Incredible!

  • One of the most glorious sounds I've ever heard. The state of his voice in 1980 is incredible.

  • A real joy to hear Siepi in a "funny" role!
