What the world really needs to see of the French Foreign Legionnaires is a decisive victory for bragging rights. People are still fumbling over what happened in Dien Bien Phu; and that's not easily forgotten.
Don"t they think their so cool because most British and Americans don't make it. I bet The U.S and British military could take the legion seperately one at a time. Also those people are probably can't make it in their own military so they join the French that always depend on other countries for help.

The reason that only 2% of Legionnaires are Anglophone (english speaker) is because when the Russian corporals draw up their list it is easy to substitute the names of Russians against the times of the guys who were leaving or no longer. their statistics are corrupted at their inception. The American in my Pl had his testicles crashed the Englishmen died when they threw him off the back of a camion.
Further, I would argue that the Legion is not even the most professional unit in France. The French Marine commando's are very good at what they do and per capita have the most professional soldiers in France. In my opinion. It is ignorant to compare the legion to specific special forces units. a better comparison would be 2eme REP vs Rangers or the US military Vs the French military.

My father was in the legion (Corsica) from 1973 to 1976. After there years of service, he was discharged due to a fall from 10 meter that hurt his ankle just before he was going to be sent to Gibouti. He was an officer in the Turkish army (he was originally Bosnian) before that. His name in the legion was Okana. My uncle also joined my father there but managed to escape from the island after a year of service. They were both physically very strong but I guess they preferred their freedom.
@Flyingtart - Better trained, mainly due to all the experience it has. The book I'm reading now has the author in a unit with former SAS and a recon marine. You can't discount the experience the various legionaires have brought to the FFL from foreign militaries during it's history. There have been former spetsnaz, marines, royal marines, etc. They all bring a little something.

One could argue that the first rifle units in the British army (c. Napoleonic wars) were special forces, but they've been absorbed into the conventional wing since. People use the term "elite" force in a misleading way. There are elite groups that operate in different capacities. The Legion is crack infantry assault force not unlike the Army Rangers. They are very very capable in this capacity. They also have smaller specialized commando unite similar to the SEALS, or the Green Berets etc..... There inantry units are among the best in the world and are highly respected by people in the know.

FFL are regular mechanized & paratroop infantry units not Special Forces. That means that their mission are different. Anyway FFL included specialized sub-units.

I was British Army infantry (KSOB)and we were arguably the best Scottish regiment. However, the Royal Marine Commandos always impressed me and were far better than the Yanks or the Legion. Wished I joined the Legion like my other ex army mates just for the hell of it.

no, the legion is a very old section of french army that we send first in priority to any conflict, as ground forces,
probably like "the marines" in US army.
They are composed 60 % of french & 40 % of many other nationalities.
training is very hard, and they are supposed to be really "tough guys".
While the french special ops were created just after the first gulf war (1991),
& are totally different units, maybe less "tough" but far more advanced in equipment,
& more "sharp" :-)

Nageurs de combat (without a "s', my bad/typo) are mainly navy units. They are called "Comandos Marine", the Navy Seals of the French military if you will. The REP has a Team that is FFL. I think that DGSE and/or another military intelligence agency has/have Teams too.

Yes the FFL is the best infantry in the world. there are teams "nageurs de combat" like the Navy Seals too. Who's the best? Who cares. It's good to have them in times of trouble. Je sais que 30% des effectifs sont gaulois au moins autant viennent de pays de l'est (Russie, Autriche, Hongrie, Roumanie...) et 40% restants viennent d'occident (USA, Canada, UK, Allemagne), d'amérique du sud (Brésil) Magreb et Afrique. Pour ma part, dans mon escadron sur 115 legionnaires, je doute que 15% soient du magreb!!!!!

People use the term "elite" force in a misleading way. There are elite groups that operate in different capacities. The Legion is crack infantry assault force not unlike the Army Rangers. They are very very capable in this capacity. They also have smaller specialized commando unite similar to the SEALS, or the Green Berets etc..... There inantry units are among the best in the world and are highly respected by people in the know.

All of you are right to some extend. I have served in RIMa and BIMa with addition of FFL soldiers. The "number and that's all" argument is false, although you don't want mothers chain themselves to the gates of the Elysee Palace asking for the troops to come back. My best memory with the FFL? A huge fight the night before Bastille Day when some arab gangs stole a white kepi. Yeah baby!!! It was hot allright. And my US wife was in the middle of it, kicking ass. Vive la Legion!!!

When on active duty with the USMC I was honored to have trained with a Legion unit for 3 weeks and I have never seen a better group of warriors, and I have worked with many units termed "elite" from many areas of the world. The Legion is the most effective fighting force in the world today and ANYONE who refutes that has either never worked with a Legion unit or is simply a thick in the head know it all, know nothing.

FFL are regular mechanized & paratroop infantry units not Special Forces. That means that their mission are different. Anyway FFL included specialized sub-units.

I respect the legion but when you say only 2% of Brits are good enough!!, probably because the best are already in the Parachute Regiment, The Royal Marines Commando, The S.A.S, and many other specialised branches of the British Forces. The British Army has been doing it for nearly a 1000 years, there is no comparison between us, and FFL.

I was British Army infantry (KSOB)and we were arguably the best Scottish regiment. However, the Royal Marine Commandos always impressed me and were far better than the Yanks or the Legion. Wished I joined the Legion like my other ex army mates just for the hell of it.
