Kali Means To Scrape History Intro

My uncles back in WWII defeated alot of Japanese officials in duels and have live to tell their story.....So many different systems and styles through out the archipelago.

Kali means.. "Hand Movement".. not scrape!..

KaLi comes from the visayan word. "Ka = Kamot and Li = Lihok .

Kamot = Hand

Lihok = Movement..

kalis i know, to scrape or to strike with a slash like manner (bisaya)... but to say kali like kalibutan... ka is the prefix for the root word libutan, so with libangon, ligo.an and so on and so forth.

and my aunt has this visayan=english dictionary w/c i think is rare...im now in melbourne...i came from cebu until 19yr old.... :D and what so funny is i found the dictionary here in melbourne in my aunt's place...Lmao... although thanks for telling me though..!~

leoangelomarquez, i agree with you that arnis is not a stick or baston it is simply a filipino martial art system. I would like to clarify something regarding "kali" and "kalis". here in Negros, "kali" means "to dig". While "kalis" spoken with the accent on the last syllable means "to scrape". And i think the title is somewhat misleading and not proper.

OK, this is a Filipino language discrepancy thing... Kalis is a long knife, but I've also heard the origin of the word as a contraction of the term "hand and body motion" in one Filipino language, and even as "Silak" (silat) backwards. My GF's Filipina and I remember the first time I tested my "Filipino" vocabulary. Apparently "hu bud" doesn't refer to "tying and untying" in Tagalog... LOL
