Strangely I judge him no better than a good journeyman like the top British F5000 and sometime F1 drivers Jackie Oliver and Redman who Andretti fought with in the 75 USF5000 series. In 76 -77Andretti was the hard professional driver and tester Chapman needed for the 77&78 but he was clearly a second slower than Peterson. To me Oliver was the most underated Lotus driver equal to Andretti in 68 and superior to Rodriquez in l970
In my opinion it had to be banned. Its supposed to be a competitive championship, and that thing stomped everything. There would have been no way the smaller teams could have built a car on the same principles for the next season. The gap between the top teams and the smaller teams would be even larger, so they probably would have left, ruining F1.
Teams like Brawn GP couldn't compete in that environment.
You are 100% wrong, actually it helped the smaller teams to be more competitive especially for the next season. For example the Ligier was a small team. But in 1979 the Ligier wing-car, the JS11 begin the season winning the first 2 races in the hands of Laffite!
Yes, strangely enough they only won 1 more race that year with Depailler.
First it looked as if Ligier would walk the 1979 season. Some rumour say they lost the data for how to set up the cars perfectly and therefore slipped back the grid.
Anyway the improved Lotus 79 was the Williams FW07, which worked as well as the Lotus but had better chassis rigidity.
Ferrari on the other hand suffered trenendously in 1980 because their flat engine made it impossible to have ground effect
