I don't know if it is just me, but in the beginning of the race, they all looked very nervous. Just how i look when i am about to compete with other high school students. Do any of you guys know how to prevent cramps during sprints? That's my main problem right now....help save the planet!
@donovanso94 Ibuprofen might help w/cramping. I'm no expert by any means, just the parent of an 8 year old who is on the swim team. He's had issues with cramping in his sprints, and we've tried a combination of a half of a banana and a mozz stick or a couple of crackers w/peanut butter about 45-60 minutes before he has practice, it seems to help along with the Ibuprofen, which is an NSAID (Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug). Good luck. :)

i love how some people think swimming is easy, go to a life guard try outs and the amount of people that cant even finish 50meters under 35 seconds is mind boggling. phelps just has an unholy tallent like he sold his soul to the devil but as long as he keeps bringing home the gold im not complaining

if u look at it hoogenband tokes a lot out of phelps on the swim but if u ever try doing a long streamline like phelps does, it takes a lot more out of u than hoogenband who barely gets passed the flags. :)

I think Popov, van den Hoogenband and Thorpe were the best freestyle swimmers ever, because they got something special. Now a days freestyle swimming is more power swimming due the introduction of the LZR and the development of trainingmethods. Don't get me wrong, Phelps is an amazing swimmer and I think the best IM+Butterfly swimmer ever, but he never won a big 100m freestyle final and I think that proves my point.

Interesting...huh. hmmmm....Phelps' 100m Freestyle is over a second faster than Thorpe ever went and a few tenths faster than Pieter's best time. In fact, Phelps holds the American Record in the event, would have won the Bronze at Beijing and is the third fastest performer in history. Phelps also had the fastest 100m Free time at the 2007 World Championships as his lead off leg in the relay (48.42) would have won the individual event by .01.

well, remember that Michael dominated the 200 free from 2005-2009 until he lost against Biedermann recently. In that period of time, Phelps broke the world record of the 200 FREE twice and won one olympic gold and two world championships so Michael has proved he's the most versatile swimmer who's ever lived.

I mean that Phelps has a much bigger advantage of the fast suits than VDH because VDH's natural body was like a suit, if you know what i mean. Bernard for example swam 46.96 yesterday, but whitout a suit he is drowning (48.50 if he has a good day)

if u look at it hoogenband tokes a lot out of phelps on the swim but if u ever try doing a long streamline like phelps does, it takes a lot more out of u than hoogenband who barely gets passed the flags. :)

...right up to the last lap where phelps out swam him by more than enough to offset Pieter's first 150 of faster swimming.

I agree. If you watch Phelps his 200m free you see that he misses the full throttle, the big speed. He has amazing turningpoints and a great start combined with that faboulus under water technique, but in my opinion not the pace you need to win. Look for instance at the first 150m of the 200m free of the WC 2007 when he compete with vandenHoogenband, that race proves my point a little bit. An injured vdH (backproblems)

I think Popov, van den Hoogenband and Thorpe were the best freestyle swimmers ever, because they got something special. Now a days freestyle swimming is more power swimming due the introduction of the LZR and the development of trainingmethods. Don't get me wrong, Phelps is an amazing swimmer and I think the best IM+Butterfly swimmer ever, but he never won a big 100m freestyle final and I think that proves my point.

you know its interesting you say that, because yesterday I was seeing an interview of Phelps, and for 2012 he is bringing in 100m free in his schedule.
I think it will be pretty interesting to watch that.

Interesting...huh. hmmmm....Phelps' 100m Freestyle is over a second faster than Thorpe ever went and a few tenths faster than Pieter's best time. In fact, Phelps holds the American Record in the event, would have won the Bronze at Beijing and is the third fastest performer in history. Phelps also had the fastest 100m Free time at the 2007 World Championships as his lead off leg in the relay (48.42) would have won the individual event by .01.

so what?its only the nature of the sport that times get bettered every year that doesnt mean phelps is more than thorpe, that phelps 200 today is i dont know how many tenths of a s faster than thorpe, yeah trhrue but is also true that while thorpe swam phelps was never up to the thorpedo level and ian remained the fastest thats the only fact i see

Yeah, too bad thorpe retired at 24. I also think phelps is better because he swims at top level in 5 individual events and 3 relays. thorpe only swam top level in 2 individual events and 1 or 2 relays (Fact).

i think u got ur "facts" wrong sir, first of all thorpe swammed several events in his career he was a real beast in freestyle being practically invincible in the midle distance and also a great 100 and even 800 swimmer, its not a matter of quantity but quality

Thorpe: A real beast in the 200 and 400 free, very good in the 100 and 800. Good in 100 back and 200 IM.
Phelps: A real beast in 200 and 400 IM, 200 free, 100 and 200 fly. Very good in 100 free and 200 back.
Quantity is important!

its a matter of opinion, personally being a sprint freestyler myself i guess im biased against middle distancers to me my hero and the greatest swimmer of all time is popov, as i said theres no way to make an objective evaluation just opinions

my point is that Michael Phelps is the best ever: 14 gold medals in olympic history and 17 worlds and counting, just broke the 100 fly record.

Phelps maybe The Best swimmer ever you can't argue with those 14 Olympic Gold Medals. But until goes Freestyle and dominates them He's not gonna get the respect he should. Look at Popov, Thorpe, Van DenHoogenband even that American jerk Gary Hall Jr.

maybe? are you kidding me?. He's the undisputed Best swimmer ever. Popov, Spitz, Biondi, De Bruin, Hackett,etc all the greats have said that Michael is the best ever. He's won 14 golds in Olympic history, 22 golds in worlds and has broken 37 world records. Michael has won golds in the toughest swim styles: 200 fly, 200 and 400IM and has won gold in the 200 free so what else he has to do to get your respect? at least he has the respect of the swim experts and greats.

well, remember that Michael dominated the 200 free from 2005-2009 until he lost against Biedermann recently. In that period of time, Phelps broke the world record of the 200 FREE twice and won one olympic gold and two world championships so Michael has proved he's the most versatile swimmer who's ever lived.
