I dont think this is benny benjamin, it sounds like uriel jones on drums as he was on most of the four tops recordings, but i could be wrong, worth checking out?! still great anyway whoever it is.... ;-)
@antoni7515 That is an area I really need to tighten up my knowledge- the different drummers at Motown and their styles. You very well are probably right about this being Uriel Jones. What knocks me out is how that bass drum is kept in nearly constant play!
@jamar22100 I hadn't thought of the Contours doing this, but I think you're right. I could hear Billy Gordon really going to town on this! Now that would have been something- the pairing of The Contours and Holland-Dozier-Holland!
@MrJanesaddiction yes it is! I read that H-D-H was trying for more of a Rolling Stones sound- the guitar riff was inspired by, I believe, the guitar in "Satisfaction." Well, it didn't quite come out that way, but I think it helped to create quite a different angle on The Motown Sound! It certainly rocks!
Oh yeah- those horns are driving as hard as the the drums. I like the stereo version too because if you listen, you'll notice the engineer actually boosted the volume a bit during the saxaphone solo and then dropped the level just a bit when Levi starts back in on the last verse.
They could have also song Shake Me Wake Me but Levi really delivered on that one.
