He's using a pedal to get that effect. I had one as a kid. Heck those pedals can make anyone sound good. Not insulting the guy playing it, just it's a sound effect. Keith Richards used them alot on the album Some Girls.

he's using a really ballsy distortion (probably from a messa boogie amp) with a slight reverb and a bit of delay on the "very long solo" part.. for the lead parts when the song starts (if were talking about the same part) he's using a wah-wah pedal whitch yeah can make anyone sound good, but the guitarist is really good, you can hear it on the long guitar solo.. really nice feel and inteligent use of notes..
