Really sharp! My uncle way back in the day had a Colony Park wagon from this same year. Smooth, quiet ride. The car in this video was a NASCAR beast back in the early 60's. If I'm not mistaken, Richard Petty ran a Merc like this in NASCAR events more than once.
When I was 5 (1965) my parents and I drove one (stock 390) from Portland OR to New York City. As we blasted across the open praries I can remember my mother leaning over so she could see the speedometer and wailing "Mike! Your going 100 miles an hour!!" Dad would confidently reply: "Yes, but I'm only doing 99 on the corners" It was red with a red and white interior as I recall

@inkey2 I think that one is white, but Coral (pink) was big back in the day. A timid, matronly schoolteacher type neighbor (circa 1967) had a Coral ~64 Merc 4 door Montclair with the Breezeway rear window and dual exhaust. I remember the duals blowing leaves across our yard when she would start it up. Very Bad Ass car today, pink or not! I'd rock it proudly. (God bless your gentle heart Vena, we miss you).
Crane Power Max Hydraulic H-268 cam. 114 lsa, 109 intake c-line, 222/234 @ .050 duration, .548/.580 lift with 1.76:1 rockers (crane ductile iron adjustable). Idle speed about 850 rpm. Pulled around 10-12" of vacuum at idle. SpeedDemon Vacuum Secondary 750 cfm carb (before choke came on them, 750VS) on Edelbrock Streetmaster 390 intake ported out.
those streetmaster intakes are junk. I have one on my 390 in my galaxie and it has nothing below about 3500 rpms. I will never buy a single plane again, especially for a daily driven street car.
@bigorangetrucker Eh, it worked alright on the Merc. Wasn't fully ported out so the runners still flowed very well with decent velocity, plus a carb spacer made a nice improvement (4 hole). Pulled a 2.05 60' time on street tires, with a 3000 stall converter. She went well! :)
@bigorangetrucker you should check out Jay Browns Intake Comparo book before you start bashing the Streetmaster. The dyno doesn't lie. In a street driven heavy car then a dual plane is better though.
I'm plopping a 460 in it in the next couple of years so i dont realy care about the intake at this point. It would be a good motor for a pullin truck or a wood hauler if nothing else, with a performer intake swap though...
What carburetor setup would you recommend on a 390 pickup motor? I'm trying to convince dad to put a 4 bbl edelbrok on it since it still has the 2bbl on it.
Well a standard 600 cfm 4bbl for a mild engine (Holley vac. secondary) or 750 for a little bit beefier engine (Holley or Edelbrock). 625 cfm road demon if you wanna go Barry Grant. :) I run a Holley 8750 600 cfm vac. secondary on my '76 F150 with a realy mild cam on it's 390 and it works pretty well.
I don't care if your hondanissansubarumitsuwatever is faster...it's not anywhere NEAR this cool. that has some vibe man! and ain't nobody gonna laugh at the tone coming from that exhaust. the whole car demands respect.
I couldn't even tell ya how many car meets ,shows cruise nights I've been to & never saw one of these,YT is the closest I've been to one...wow what a car !
I know where one is, sitting in a storage lot rotting away. I know its been sitting in the same spot for 15 years now. Im not sure the year, but it has a 410 in it. I know becaused I hopped the fence just to have a look at it & got ran off !!
My dad had a 70 ford with the 360. Some idiot welded everything to the collecters and some idiot put 2wd headers on the 4wd pickup. Took dad 4 hours to change the starter. By the way, i was logdog1.
my dad has one of these, its the s55 fastback kick ass version, it is very, very fast. Its gold and is believed to be the only one in euorpe, we live in the uk :)
i have a mercury montecliar 64 but it needs exterior parts was wondering if you could tell me where to find em i see you live in illinois so do i in chicago
I heard headers on these 390s are a pain. My dad had them on his 70 ford pickup which had the 390 and it took him 4 hours to change a starter because he couldn't get to them.
Headers are easier if you lift the engine and on this car the starter isn't too bad as some of the tubes go around the frame rail and slip back into the tube to the collector. On my '76 F150 with a 390, you have to undo the motor mount on one side and loosen up the header to get the starter out, lol, yah that could take some time.
Love this car! I have a white 63 just like it...It''s been stored in a barn for 'bout 15 years. Many great memories in that car, One night, I got brave and pushed the old tired 390 up to 105 mph(and climbing) before I decided to let off the gas pedal. When I did...I saw sparks in my rear view mirror. Thankfully, it was unharmed. I did rebuild the motor but it now suffers from years of neglect. This vid really makes me want to try to fire her up. Mine has factory stainless fender skirts!
had a 64 ; 390 hipo , 4 sp . 4.11 detroit locker all factory . blowed up , put 390 , 300 horse . built that later had 430 horspower on the ground . run 12.4 , 115 mph . mine was the same color ! wish i had that motor in my 80 crown vic . 2 door !
No, the short block is a stock 390 block. Not sure if the Edelbrock heads make a difference for valve clearance though, so you should check just in case. I mocked it up with clay and found I had plenty of clearance. Good luck!
I'm running a Crane HMV-278 which I think is now called a PowerMax 278, 114 lsa, 109 intake c'line, 222/234 duration @ 0.050, 278/290 adv dur, .548/.580 lift at the valve. The mufflers are 3" Edelbrock Stainless center in-out, heavy duty (just has a thicker metal case). Exhaust is Hooker Super Comps 1 7/8" primarys with 3.5" collectors reduced to dual 3" exhaust with an X-pipe, and turn downs at the rear bumper. Thanks for all the positive comments!
LORD have mercy its great to see the Merc, there is nothing like the sound of those FORD V8 390 motors keep that sucker runnin, out there on thunder road. FORDROAD AUSTRALIA
Love yer Merc, nothin' like 'em is there? Not even like a Galaxie. Seen Unger's '64 Pikes Peak edition? 427 SO w/toploader? Understand there are exactly zero left. Would LUV to clone. Shit a 427" Ford would cost $20k alone.
Thanks for the video. I love the less-common late '50s-early '60s cars. I've got a couple vids of a '61 caddy and lots of vids of rusting relics if you wanna check them out.
