When i make some machinery with redstone i dont hide the insides. I cover the whole wireing with glass, so that you can see the insides. Makes a nice lightshow when its dark. I was also a fan of the old transparent gameboy, if you remember it.

Captain, Ithink your drop is too far. Allow me to suggest: 1) make the water flow to the edge of the drop, not one short. 2) use single piston to block the top of the tube creating a 2-deep well. This should increase survival rate, but may have to adjust the tube bottom upwards. I have stored over 700 and drop them 19 with nearly 100% survival. 3) remove block under wall at tube bottom so items can be gathered; this will increase the rate of XP intake (decrease lag).

What I do is grab a diamond sword enchanted with Bane of Anthropods, and then use SPC and spawn about 200 silverfish. After killing all of them, your level goes up exponentially. Try it!
