It's a ripoff of Hanukkah and it was invented in the 50's and is based on racial and cultural superiority and most celebrators are downright black nationalist. It's the equivalent of a Neo Nazi going to NordicFest in the midwest.
A group of friends went to Ghana for a cultural exchange. When addressing a small crowd, one friend referred to himself as an 'African American'. He was immediately interrupted by a woman who refuted the term, saying that he was American/ he knew nothing about the problems of Africa/ he had no connection to the continent despite the color of his skin or his centuries-old lineage.
We who live in the USA are Americans. We aren't treated equally, but new titles won't make it more equal,... duh.
Kwanzaa is a remarkable hoilday to bring African people in faith and divinity.
We don't care what others think of Kwanzaa.
Should I care about the Jews and their Hanukkah, the Chinese and their Dragon festival, the Sikhs and the Hindus and their Dwali and the Muslims and their Ramadam? Because not only it is their traditionality, but it is their honourage as well.
Christmas isn't a so-called season of will, it is more about explotation and deceit.
I do find it odd that the term African American is used. Why am I not called an Irish-English-German American? My English roots are one generation back and my German roots are 2 generations back...I have a much closer connection to those cultures than the majority black people have to Africa. Being African is not the same as being black...hello South African whites, Egyptians etc. country and continent of origin is not the same thing as race or ethnicity. Kwanzaa is a made up holiday...
@a566626 Your so ignorant it's not funny, for one white americans are the ones who gave us the term African American not Blacks, and I have been wondering why whites are universally called European Americans, and if you really want to get technical Blacks should really be called African-European Americans since so many of your ancestors were rapists. South African whites are only there because of colonization by the way.Go learn some history and Kwanzaa is made up like every other holiday duh.
@sexyseven7 First of all "your" in this context would be "you're" as in "you are," for someone that is supposedly not ignorant I find that comment interesting. I'm not sure who coined the term, I'm simply saying it is ridiculous. Most whites in the USA are from Europe or have those origins which is why they are termed that "universally." I am aware of the sour past of slavery but thanks for the education, also regarding South African whites. Kwanzaa was invented because some people felt left out
@a566626 Your, you're or you are,you got the point. Maybe you should be an English teacher since you sure as hell don't know history. If you don't know who coined it or anything for that matter than look it up before you make uneducated responses that anyone can read.I also agree it is ridiculous, and would never refer to myself in that way, just like the majority of Blacks don't either.Maybe you should take that up with your race and hey maybe if you start calling yourself E-A it will catch on.
@sexyseven7 What is it exactly that I missed on history? I'm curious, you did not provide any new information that I was unaware of yet unless you can answer who pushed the term "AA" to refer to black people. I'm happy calling myself white or Caucasian, thanks. Where do I say that whites did not rape blacks or that South Africa was not colonized? You seem to think you are educating me but I already knew that, my point is simply the term AA is silly, I'm glad you agree.
@sexyseven7 Ps- since you are a historical genius and wish to clarify history for everyone I have a question for you. I was always told Jesse Jackson urged Americans to use this term, "African American," is this incorrect information? I don't care what people want to be called, I simply think the term is referring to something other than race.
@a566626 I Am no where near a history genius, I just don't like ignorant comments toward my race. But anywho, Jesse Jackson was on board with the term and did TRY to encourage Blacks to do so. But what does that mean? He's one Black American. Are you and whoever you heard this from trying to make him the spokesperson for us now? If that's what you simply thought maybe you should have wrote that instead of insulting. even though i don't understand what that had to do with Kwanzaa anyway
@sexyseven7 I did not intend to insult your race, but I think the term is lame. I made the comment a year ago so I do not remember why I said that. I get frustrated with the term because it is difficult to know what to say to avoid insulting people actually, as you mentioned, one person wants to be called that and someone else does not. I am not insulted by people referring to me by my skin, race or origin unless they are intentionally attempting to be rude or condescending.
@a566626 well know we have gotten somewhere and I can respect that. Maybe Americans should just call each other Americans, than all the weird stuff can be avoided. But you should watch A Black American by Smokey Robinson - Def Poetry Jam on here(youtube), this is one opinion, and some stuff is a little out of whack but majorly he got it right.
@xxdonaldqxx not so it is a direct rite from their ancestors the hebrew israelite who came to this country as slaves its a replica of something their ancestors did with an african twist
@xxdonaldqxx You obviously don't know what Hannukkah even is because if you did than you would know that is about a war in 165 B.C and the victory of it over the Antiochus Epiphanes, and even if you ask a Jew about it, it really doesn't hold much signifcance with them. So listen to Dr.Mayes and than number 1 say how they are alike and than how would Kwanzaa be a ripoff??? Lets hope you and these other ignorant bastards don't die that way.
Leave it up to a bunch of insecure black people to invent such a holiday. Get a grip its not even in the same league as Christmas or Hanuka. To stop the racism first the blacks must stop hating on white holidays. Thus the same ridiculous reason black people want to start afrocentric schools, get a grip black people of the world. In short quanza is as made up as festivus is on Seinfeld. Stop hating on white and euro people because its you people being the discusting racists now.
@2guysdesign Oh my just when I thought the comments couldn't get anymore ignorant. #1Hanukkah and christmas are not "white" holidays,Jewish people started out Black as well as Christians,If you actually read the bible or Torah you would know that. Having Kwanzaa has nothing to do with hating on another race or a holiday seeing as though most all Blacks celebrate the holidays, obviously you just wrote a ridiculous comment for attention, because you sure didn't listen to what the prof. was saying.
A black secular tradition. The real question: Culture comes before Spirituality. Again, It's always about being Black. Reconnect to the continent of Africa? What a line.
@CSteven59 So how does saint Patrick's day or mother's day or father's day or the fourth of July, or thanksgiving have anything to do with spirituality for that matter?

This guy has no clue about the history of Kwanzaa. It is COMPLETELY anti-christian, anti-white. Check out the numbskull who made it up in 1966...
