I am having an issue with this on my captivate. At about 8min 30sec on your video during the download your phone boots back up mine just bricks. Stays on the charging screen and I have to use a jig to get it to download mode and flash a custom rom to boot back up. The same rom that I'm trying to get away from cause no applications seem to work with it (Force Close Errors). Any other suggestions for what I can do?

I did the same method and I unplugged my phone. Now whenever I try to turn it on the ATT logo keeps flashing and the phone doesn't boot. If I try to plug it into the computer the battery meter shows up but doesn't show the charge and the loading circle is on it. Is there a way to fix this?

The video steps are flawless. Software was a big download, but it worked. I came here to reset my phone so that I could take advantage of my two year warranty with Radio Shack and get the battery replaced. After only 11 months the battery does not hold a charge over night. I had all the stuff downloaded from xda and had been working on it feverishly last night to get everything working again (a failed kies attempt screwed me over and bricked the phone telling me i should have just stayed with eclair). NOTE: Odin has problems running under Win7 64-bit. you will need to set the compatibility to Windows SP SP3 or SP2, then run as admin for it to download the files.

@followlee the few times i have had that problem was because i had skipped a simple step but that may not always be the case , even though the captivates in theory should all be the same that just isnt the case , there like real computers and as many people know they can have a mind of there own , what works on one computer may not work on another. there are a lot of people that this works for and some that just cant get it to work and probably 6 out of 10 of them is because of the phone itself

Does one need to restore one's Samsung Captivate to factory firmware before flashing a new ROM?

Also, if one has say Serendipity ROM and wants to flash to a different ROM, say Cognition, has one got to revert to factory firmware before flashing?

Lastly, if one wishes to upgrade to a lates ROM in the sam family (eg. fro Cognition 3 to Cognition 4), does one need to revert to factory firmware?

@EazyTouches u dont have to but i always do just because i like clean installs and there has been a few times that flashing from 1 rom to another has caused problems like when a rom has a new kernel and u flash to a diff rom and leaves that custom kernel but the new rom isnt setup for that kernel so i would say yes flash stock then flash ur new rom

I just want to say...thank you so much. I was just trying to get a custom ROM, and i needed to get it back to factory 2.1. I went to the Odin site, the exact site you are on, but it wasn't working. The instructions aren't 100% clear on the site. I had no idea that recovery mode and download mode were different...i just assumed they were different words. Thanks so much for clarifying this.

The times I've had that happen to fix it all I do is exit out of Odin pull the battery out so u leave download mode the once that is good open Odin with right click and select run as admin the do the steps for getting in dl mode

@projectpaki that clears everything i believe and u have to just have ur phone plugged in and have usb-debugging mode on but not mounted and then press master clear but i havnt done it myself because it wipes ur internal sd card i think but u can just use odin to get back without doing master clear

yes i have a captivate i run as admin. i have the drivers install. i have phone in download mode everything. it even saids added in odin but when i hit start or master clear it stops for start it stops in file analysis and for master clear it stops in master clear started. many people on the xda link have had the same problem in the first page they talk about this same issue. You seem to be able to make it go threw some how. im not a noob just a bit lost . hope you can help

@BlinkPhaseVideos im in the uk and the i9000 im using came from vodafone, phone is unlocked as im using a different sim now but when i updated it last time on kies for 2.1 update 1 i got bloatwares from vodafone i.e. voda360 etc which i think prevents me from updating to froyo that is why i want to get back to factory firmware. haven't tried any flashing or any of the sort but im sure i could follow instructions, do you reckon i should try? and would doing so let me update to froyo?

@skateforeverb what do you mean? After installing the drivers and before trying this procedure, connect your phone to your computer. If your computer is able to recognize your phone, your good. If you do not know if you have the drivers installed, then you probably should not be doing this.
