Abysmal: immeasurably great or profound; it seems fine to me. That is if you use the word great in a different context like: this pie is great! Abysmal to me can be a good thing per se; it's more of a word that describes depths, but I thing if you bend it ( in the sense of using it in a different context) a tad it'll fit just fine. They do it in Poetry and Literature all the time; that's how words get more range. Oh, and he used it perfectly (despite the spelling).
