In the late 50's the CIA had a secret brainwash project called MKUltra. They paid a Dr Cameron in Montreal to carry it out. I am reading the book presently. I am curious about the source Mr. Streatfield uses on page 111, in regard to the possibility to inculcate beliefs in the paranormal discovered by Dr. Hebb. The endnotes don't give a very good direction to go and I am looking to examine the source material.

Immediately, when I had read the paragraphs, I immediately thought of the radio show Coast to Coast AM and the isolated audience.

While I can't positively identify the source Streatfield referenced, Donald Hebb did make a presentation on the topic of mind control at Harvard in June 1958:

Interesting topic you raise Proudfootz,i believe that there is compelling evidence to support the theory that R.F.K 's alleged assassin -Sirhan Sirhan was under this kind of mind control experiment.Theories abound also about the great John Lennon's assassin-Mark Chapman;the first cop on scene remarking that he looked like "he was programmed" the catcher in the rye being the catalyst for the programmed instructions to kill.Would like to hear your opinion.

I got the sarcasm but I am inclined to doubt they could come up with a reliable technique. It might be that some technique might work on susceptible people and they would also have to figure out which people are be vulnerable.

I think the brain/mind isn't as simple as they would like it to be.

I agree on both points - if it were possible to 'program' someone into becoming an unwitting assassin you'd need the right candidate and some luck.

That being said I would say it's not impossible IMO.

The fact that our clandestine services were trying to achieve this says a lot about how far they're willing to go.

sounds interesting. have you ever checked out some of these reviewers on the website Amazon. There are people with 4000 book reviews. It worked out that 1 reviewer was reading 4 books a week. Its possible i guess.

I don't usually plan which books I'll read. It often comes down to what's on the library shelf that seems appealing in some way.

Hitchens's book sounds interesting - I'd probably pick it up if I happened to see it.
