  • wonderful

  • Two points, 1:-Some of Bach's compositions become immediatley clear to a Gifted player, for Instance,Contemplative ?-They don't all have to go like a machine gun !!.

2 :-In The late 50's & 60's, as a budding Bach fan..I also got asked, because of my fine handwriting,as an apprentice draughtsman,to do copywork and quickly became utterly swamped with requests-My writing rapidly descended to an almost identical style to this,-because when you have to write 30 sheets OVERNIGHT ! this is only way.

  • Although Robert Hill is one of my favourite keyboard players of all time, this particular recording I found disappointing. The bass is too quiet, and the structure of the work is not made clear enough, perhaps as a result of the rubato.

  • @FûrCe77

    Idiot.

  • bravo!!

  • Exceptionally fine interpretation and exquisite ornamentation! Rubato is used wisely at critical points! Very flowing and natural playing!

  • This is such a moving interpretation of a sublime piece of music.

Your rubato is so compelling as it truly comes from your heart.

In the context of 'early music' performance at the moment, this really stands out for me.

    All the best, Yair

  • Robert Hill's phrasing of this subtle piece is truly outstanding ...

  • Sublime playing. god!

  • @bubblykings, I agree his notation is lovely, and gives the impression of having been written with great speed, yet with great clarity and beauty. He of course had plenty of practice. I'm assuming, btw, that this is actually Bach's hand and not, say, one of his copyists, e.g. Anna Magdalena. But it certainly looks like his authentic hand.

  • Bach's handwriting is interesting, and I like the instrument.

  • @F0rCe77 I think you may well be in the distinguished position of being the first person in the last 250 years to have expressed this opinion on Bach's Reinschrift handwriting.

  • @F0rCe77 you realy have to see beethoven's handwritting if you think that this is ugly... :P

  • @F0rCe77 You never saw Lizst lolll

  • @F0rCe77 Have you seen Beethoven's?

  • Omg... no words to describe this interpretation,

I really appreciate this double master piece (one for JS, one for Robert Hill)!!

  • i usu do not like early piano sounds.this was recorded well and beaut sounding instrument.I loved ths!

  • I wonder that mr. Robert Hill isn't famous, I hardly discovered his blog... Is he known well among musicians? I find his harpsichord and fortepiano transcriptions amazingly soulful

  • He is quite well known actually.

Unfortunately not as well as Koopman is, but still, one of the best known interpreters of baroque music.

  • Although I like his play much more than Koopman's...

  • first time i listen Bach on a fortepiano.

it is more suitable for Bachs music than conventional modern pianos !!

    thanx for posting!

  • amazing, expressive interpretation! Great to see the beautifully written manuscript as well!

  • I love Bach's handwriting! It looks like a work of art itself not mentioning the music!!!!!

  • ever seen the kunst der fugue manuscript? its full of drawings

  • @bubblykings

Bach's handwriting is beautiful but very unclear. It's a fact, my teacher says the same. And, f.e. in invention 7 in many places we don't know exactly if there should be a sharp or not.

  • nice acoustic for the instrument

  • fortepianos were the ORIGINAL pianos. They looked like a small harpsichord, and were lighter and more delicate than today's pianos. Bach played it once at least.

Mozart's pianos were essentially the same type (Austrian) which was based off the old fortepianos. Very delicate and melodious. Beethoven HATED them though - he ordered English pianos which were bulkier and could take more pounding, for his louder and more dynamic pieces.

Most pianos today are based on the English type.

  • Bravo. Thanks for uploading this very interesting vid. The fortepiano sounds great. Can you please give more info. about the specific instrument you use here?

  • I don't know why is it fortepiano and not on harpsichord, but anyway, it is wonderful!!

  • The fortepiano is the first well-known keyboard instrument that could play in varying degrees of loudness and softness. But the clavichord preceded the fortepiano by a century+ and was in fact Bach's favorite keyboard instrument. I have played a clavichord. It is a most interesting instrument. By pressing down on the key while it is touched down on the string, one can pull up the tone slightly as tension is applied.

  • I don't know why I so often see it said that the clavichord was in fact Bach's favorite instrument. Almost everything about the clavichord in its limitations--though a valuable compositional tool--suggests the precise opposite and everything about the organ, pedaled-harpsichord, and Bach's compositions suggests the two aforementioned instruments the favored. It seems that Forkel's supposition in the 1800s has somehow survived unchallenged to this day through the phenomenon of viral trivia.

  • well of course. but what i wanted to know if the fortepiano was different to the general pianoforte which falls under your description.

  • whats a forte piano??

  • Google it , and you will find its` picture.

  • relle loud at first, like a accent, then rite to piano.

  • The clefs which bach used for keyboard music are crazy!

  • Very ornate, sometimes we lose the original lines of the voices because the big amount of ornaments. The result got very interesting.

  • What is it with the written music of Bach? Typically you'll sheet music from other composers in a standard printed format but with Bach the music is played along with his own hand written music. I have to admit it does have a uniqueness about it.

  • very good ! that is music

Bach is the God of music..

  • i like it, its nice.

  • screw you

  • This is the best exchange I have ever seen regarding Bach.
