Apps that rely on new Feature Pack abilities don't get written for older phones; Plenty of experiments, like Nokia's threaded SMS, were called out as doable only in FP1, for example.
It's a tad duplicitous to answer this question as a standard software compatibility issue. Too many baseline upgrades get lumped into FPs (vCal in email, anyone?), and apps that require hooks into those upgrades aren't out. In light of iPhone 2.0, Nokia must do better.
Feature Pack question = totally not answered.

That is "apps that require hooks into those upgrades aren't for the left-out."

People forget that the unsubsidized/no-contract price of the iPhone 3G is $599/$699.
The way you get these high-end phones down in price is simple: Get a carrier to pay for it (and pass on the cost to you as a contract).
