People have to separate the innovation from Research & Development that comes from Taxpayer money (grants from the National Institutes of Health), also State tax money. Besides this, drug & pharama and biomedical companies do foot the bill. The portion that hospitals put comes mostly from non-profit money from the tax exceptions.

Ask any insurance expert how insurance companies make money. We pay premiums which the companies then invest for a return. They typically invest in treasuries, munies, and other low yield low risk securities. Another part of their business is the adverse selection factor which pays them money by denying the claims of "uninsurable" risks. This isn't fair and is a dark side of the business. The heads of insurance companies are paid bonuses when they exceed a certain amount of claims denials.

The rankings referred to here, 38th I think, were done in a study at the University of Michigan, the World Health Organization gave up rankings in 2001(2000 was the last one), because of the complexity of the task.

By the way europe has high speed trains, provides care for it's people, and is moving away from middle eastern oil. these are just a few things that the europeans have surpassed us in.
Nonetheless, most people in the US aren't interested in turning to this model for various reasons. For much the same reason as high-speed trains don't make sense in the USA; populations density, distance between population centers, people just plain prefer the freedom cars afford, for instance, the nordic model isn't very desirable there.
Our current system is in ruins... The insurance companies are literally making billions from human sickness and pain. You stay sick and they get rich.

I'm for public health care but I'd be a lot more confident if I wasn't sure people would abuse it and clog up hospitals with stubbed toes. The fact is it is a hard switch and it'll probably be 10 years before people accept it and stop trying to milk it to try and get at least their tax dollars worth of care each year. The best would be to just raise the minimum for medicaid to like 50,000/year and improve it a bit which would cover anyone who needs it and rich can have their precious insurance

When you have an inherently limited supply, and virtually unlimited demand. Prices will go through the roof. What someone is wiling to pay for healthcare is limited only by their ability to pay, now throw health insurance into the mix, and that "limit" is gone.

Another reason why it's so expensive is because those companies focus on treatment rather than cures. Cures aren't as profitable because you only need to take it for a limited time, whereas treatments you have to keep taking, sometimes for the entire life of the patient. So we have to keep paying and paying.

People have to separate the innovation from Research & Development that comes from Taxpayer money (grants from the National Institutes of Health), also State tax money. Besides this, drug & pharama and biomedical companies do foot the bill. The portion that hospitals put comes mostly from non-profit money from the tax exceptions.
BUT private Health insurance does NOT pay for experimental procedures, and hospitals in general just suck in as much as they can.

I honestly just pay attention to the earnings reports, forecasts, etc etc. Plus some of the interviews are kind of entertaining.. but other than that it really is incredible how they attack anyone who goes against the corporations. Health insurance companies survive on something called adverse selection. It means that they basically profit from insuring people who aren't "insurable" and then denying them coverage when they file a claim.

Ask any insurance expert how insurance companies make money. We pay premiums which the companies then invest for a return. They typically invest in treasuries, munies, and other low yield low risk securities. Another part of their business is the adverse selection factor which pays them money by denying the claims of "uninsurable" risks. This isn't fair and is a dark side of the business. The heads of insurance companies are paid bonuses when they exceed a certain amount of claims denials.

I'm for public health care but I'd be a lot more confident if I wasn't sure people would abuse it and clog up hospitals with stubbed toes. The fact is it is a hard switch and it'll probably be 10 years before people accept it and stop trying to milk it to try and get at least their tax dollars worth of care each year. The best would be to just raise the minimum for medicaid to like 50,000/year and improve it a bit which would cover anyone who needs it and rich can have their precious insurance

When you have an inherently limited supply, and virtually unlimited demand. Prices will go through the roof. What someone is wiling to pay for healthcare is limited only by their ability to pay, now throw health insurance into the mix, and that "limit" is gone.
Because now the patient isn't paying for their healthcare directly.
The result, there is NO inherent mechanism in the system to stop price increases

Another reason why it's so expensive is because those companies focus on treatment rather than cures. Cures aren't as profitable because you only need to take it for a limited time, whereas treatments you have to keep taking, sometimes for the entire life of the patient. I've also seen CNN doing their ad $ masters bidding on health care insurance and other things too. I find I can't take watching CNN for more than a 10 mins cause it's gotten so obvious that they are being motivated by corporate agendas.

CNBC is the worst financial news show in the world because of her and Cramer. What gets me is when there is a business report NBC Nightly News tries to make them and her appear legitimate by bringing them on the show for their two cents of babble. I cringe when Brian Williams ask Maria for her opinion on what is going on in Wall St. They need to fire her and Cramer fast.

How anyone can defend the current health insurance industry in America while they gouge the American people, increase premiums at a rate 3 times faster than the average increase in salary, and deny coverage (even to those who have paid into the system for years) is besides me?
Outside of Major League Baseball, the health insurance industry is the only other anti-trust industry in America. So if you're cool w/ the health care fat cats making A-Rod type money w/ less incentive, that's on you!

Dr Dean has many good points, but it's all falling on deaf ears. The mainstream media is happy to be the willing lackeys of the Health Care industry, so they're no help, either. Its illegal for someone to be denied emergency care in the US.
Do away with gov reg on physicians, hospitals, and pharma and the costs will drop like a rock.
People that cant afford to go to the expensive hospitals will have an alternative to go to a lower priced hospital.
Now people have no choice because gov regulations have made it impossible for middle or lower end competition to exist. Not everyone can afford to stay at the Ritz Carlton, thats why there are motel 6's I

the private sector worked perfectly in health care before government got involved. Elective surgeries, such as lasik, where there are no insurance companies or government involvement has seen quality rise and costs go down. Why? Competition between physicians and clinics or hospitals , exactly what is lacking in HC today.With insurance dictating what dr;s are reimbursed, the worst doctors make as much as the best doctors.Why aren't patients responsible for getting the doctors paid?it'd help cut$
