maya is a node based program. you work right into the gut of the program, they dont make it so pretty for, you pretty much have to do everything yourself. which brings great flexibility if you know your stuff, but a terrible pain if you're new. i heard it's harder to learn than max since it's all nodes. i use maya btw
Theres one thing I like in Maya is the quick and easy workflow, do things quick and fast. I have learnt both Maya and max. From my viewpoint is that Maya has one hotkey which is g, that's why I can do fast. While max has no shotcut key for previous tools.
You guys 3ds max is modeling more for character creation, maps and etc. in video games and. Maya is a program for animations like cloudy with a chance of meatballs, astroboy, monsters inc. any pixar, dreamworks , animation movie. Hopefully this helped guys out. ;)
reason why Max is better at modeling is because it doesn't go by the rules of modeling. You can model using tris, quads even fucking n-gons.. while in Maya you have to go by the rules. Which is more professional. Build it in quads unless it's for a game engine. I like both but some things really piss me off in Max, lets say you have a project which two studios have to work on. Each plugin that you use in Max the other studio has to have. Not like in maya
i prefer 3ds max because its the first one i learned but maya u can do the same things just a little different controls, every artist and animator has their own preference. the plugins make maya, 3ds max, and udk or any other game engine compatible so its no big deal
Maya has tools which you can do for 5 minutes later than Max, and Max has some tools which can be done in Maya later than 5 minutes. Maya has some tools which requires plug-in to do in max. But Maya doesn't need it so much. By the way i am using both softwares. Max is one step behind than Maya.
@MTTTrainer It's hard to explain difference between Maya and Max ( watch differences on YouTube :D). If you already using Autodesk Max , i think it's better for you to upgrade Max to 2011 or 2012 version. Because, If you take Maya you will have to learn use Maya, because Maya is litle different then Max. (Sorry on poor english :D )
@MTTTrainer there's no difference between them only interface and the better look .. you can animate in maya .. but 3ds max easier in Biped that's it .
3ds MAX , together with all the best plugins, eg, FumeFX + Realflow + Vray + Rayfire + Krakatoa VS Maya Unlimited. That will be a real comparison, even though MAX will be more expensive, it will be a true comparison.
I don't know anything about either of the two products. Did you list all those plug-ins for Max becasue Maya out of the box has the functionality of all those plug-ins? Basically you are saying you would need to buy all those plug-ins for MAX in order to end up with what you would if you buy Maya without plug-ins? All that is already built into Maya?
most of those plugins are available only for 3ds max. only Vray is available for both max and maya. and yes, to get a proper comparison of both products you will need those plugins. Maya has everything built into itself, unlike 3ds where you need the extra plugins for extra stuff, but they are still great, easy and very effective.
Both programs are more than capable to get brilliant results. It doesn't matter what the process is, you get the same results eventually. Sure there are more plugins for Max like Rayfire and others, but Maya is still a brilliant program which I use every day.
I have been using Autodesk Maya for 7 years and learned only the basics in Max but speaking from Maya's viewpoint there hasn't been a project i haven't been able to do.Most likely it depends on the user and not the program seeing as both are great programs and u can do anything with both. Most ppl say that Maya is better at animation and Max is better at games however i have seen great movies made in Max and i played great games made in Maya so they both win.
What i really wan't to know is, what can you do in Maya that you can't do in max and vise versa? As previously said they are tools to do a job, so i'd like to know what these tools can do. I'm currently using max. Is there anyone out there that can say what the benefits, drawbacks of each are? Then i can figure which one to use, for what ever project or maybe both!
?? Matter of preference? Just a tool? Im a 3d Max User but know im learning Maya, There is one a big big BIIIGGGG reason why! If you wanna make Fluids in 3d max you need a Plugin. If you want to make a convincent Fire You need a Plugin, If you want easy animation in Dinamics You need a plugin. Maya Already have it, and with each version they improve those Features. 3d max keeps with the shit "new MODELING TOOLS" "New improvent when you pull or push a vertexx Yeeeeehhh"
This video is a sample, a proof that shows that it doesn't matter what tool you use, if you don't feel the animation, the whole production will collapse!
i was forced to migrate to from 3ds to maya because of an error in my registry and the only way to keep animating was to get a new program or reinstall windows.
Neither will win. Max, Maya, and Softimage are a commercial scheme thought up by Autodesk in which they each have different strong points and weak points so that production houses have to buy all of them and then buy every one of their stupid updates. Autodesk can get away with this because they have a monopoly on the 3d marked and in the end Autodesk is the winner.
The fact that maya is more advanced is becoming less and less relevant. Seeing as that the company who owns maya ALSO owns 3D max. The interface with maya is at times just completely senseless and frustrating, while 3D max interface is very easy. Students who have learned some maya have gone to 3d max and get 3d max within hours saying why isnt maya like this? If maya was smart it would change its interface to that of 3D max, it really is more user friendly.
If Autodesk was smart both would be rolled into a single product, 3ds Maya or maybe MayaMax. A simpler easier to use interface like max, but with the more powerful tools for organic modelling of Maya.
dude. I tried 3ds max in the first place. and it was too hard. then i tried maya. and i felt comfortable from the first second...
Its always different how people see something... and if your an advanced modeler/animator. then its good to have the tools right there to select. and what you said about (maya should chance its interface into 3ds max one) then you dont know what your talking about
I have to be honest with this one. maya is best for Graphical pasting in an OBJ format as in the 3d format placing UV's. 3d max is best for easy animation and bending object and mathematical ways of forming an object.
@007s00s Why would it, only 15-20% of the world uses Mac, the rest use PC it is a waste of time developing or porting software to Mac. They should just make PCs and save the duplication of effort and resources of making a second computer type.
Maya is autodesk most poweful full fledged app for visaul art and media. Inventor Is autodesk most powerful CAD. The rest are just smaller cheaper packaages to sell to clients with smaller needs, in a more economical way.

I've seen people use lightwave and get just as good results so i can't definitively say that any are the best. I can only say the artist behind the desk is talented.
well i use 3ds max and i just got maya .. coz so many people told me that maya is better .. but uh i can't find anything in maya .. lol everything is so diffrent :S .. and im using 3ds max for like 3 years ..
I learned 3d with studio max. I tried to learn maya after that and got so confused I felt I was wasting time and went back to 3ds. All my game dev m8s say move to maya. I think im quicker with 3ds so I stick to that as workflow speed is important. Especially in the industry. I dont like the .3ds format tho. I prefer .obj. the real question is what is faster for you.
Haha, I don't understand why there is so much competition between the two programs. They are just tools, its like arguing over whether a wrench is better than a screwdriver. Use each for their respective strengths. I use both all the time.
@SkinnyMan3000 In my experience (I'm an animator so I'm kind of biased) Max has better tools for modeling, and Maya has the better animation tools. I've never formally used Max, so I'm really only going off of what my buddies who are learning Max in college say. But according to them, the graph editor is awful (though I've also heard it's much better now) but the modeling tools are great. I still do all my modeling in Maya because I usually only do it for quick and dirty props and sets.
@xxbluejay21 As a lot of people have said, Max is better (though that is a such a relative word) for modeling, but Maya has some better animation tools. I also like to use Max for quickly creating text since Maya's text creation system, while not terrible, isn't amazing. Honestly, I use Maya a lot, as I started off using it, and have grown accustomed to it. But there are many tasks that Max just does a lot faster. There are so many modeling shortcuts in Max that you have to do by hand in Maya.
I know the answer who will win.. its not the program its the user.. maya or max are just tools.. but maya is better becuase maya is faster and u can write u'r own scripts and have's more plugins also for the game indusry first I taught that max was the software for game but also now maya is taking over so let me put it like this if u really want to do movie effects then I will say maya is the software.. is maya to hard then u have to take the little brother that's max ;)
@DickKnowsBest AutoCAD is good for drafting (Revit is a more powerful tool now thought for that) and can do 3D renderings since it has mental ray in it, but if you are only doing visualizations then 3ds Max or 3ds Max design would be better.
its not the software its the person if you cant adapt then to bad they all have some kick ass stuff i use softimage but something happend now i have to use maya since its close to it
they are both good. for a fast fast modeler 3DS max is good to model something easily and quickly. Maya will most likely create more professional works.
Im not sure why people think that Maya is more professional. They both produce the same results in the end. Both are used on Movies (3ds Max was used on Avatar all fo the X-Men, 2012 etc and the list goes on for movies), Games, TV etc. with 3ds Max being used in a slightly wider variety of industries due to its use in the architectural and engineering fields. Its all what you like and prefer as a tool.
@3dtraining Well said 3dtraining. I actually started out in Maya and I came to really like it (and still do) although a while back I decided to learn max. Initially I didn't like it, just because I wasn't use to it. Now, I'm a bit better in max then I am in maya. They are so similar though, it is really easier to merge from one to the other. In the end, it's a just a tool, choose the one that you prefer to work in and stick with it. If you ever need to switch, it won't be difficult.
If you are going professional go Maya otherwise Max. Professionaly Maya is used more, well particularly in film. 3D Max has more of a following in the gaming industry. Max will be easier to learn but Maya can be pushed more hence its use with studios. I believe Maya's script is better for creating tools and pipeline integration aswell, adding to its usiblity in the higher-end markets of film! In a non-professional capacity Max seems to be the more popular though!
I hear Max is easier to learn, but when I looked at Industrial Light and Magic, Weta, it's primarily Maya. Pixar says to learn maya as well. So, all of the LOTR, Spider-Man, Pirates, King Kong, Avatar, X-Men, Transformers, all use mainly Maya. Max can certainly produce professional results, but the film industry seems to have demonstrated to me that if you are really serious about high end 3D Maya is best. Blender is cool, I mean it's free, but Maya really does have a lot more capabilities.
I am thrilled with Blender (the latest version is nicer too) AND, I just dumped Windows for Ubuntu/Linux and found that ALL my open source GUI programs are working somewhat better!! ALL FOR FREE,AND LEGAL. I'm certain Autodesk will gladly sue you out of existence for stealing their product.
The Blender interface is a bitch to learn, but it does all the things the other$ do. You're going to have to learn the principles, and there is NO substitute for creativity.
yeah im using blender too and i TOTALLY agree with you
its not so easy to understand in the early, but once you are in you will nearly find the tools and functions, all the big programs (c4d or whatever) claim to be the only program including this ^^
And one day, you'll go for an interview at a large studio, and be rejected for the position because you only use Blender, don't use Windows or Mac, and spell the letter S with a dollar sign, thus solidifying your position as an open-source toolbag.
@nhavas Firstly, blender runs on every operating system you listed and more. Secondly plenty of large corporations feel it is worth their time to be involved in open source including IBM, Microsoft and Apple.
They are both really good and with every version they become even more similar in features. Personally I like Maya becuase thats what I first learned but Max is awesome too.
Which program is easiest/best for beginners (like myself). I of course wouldn't be buying the full version (like $10000 for Maya) but maybe a 1 or 2 year student copy. Which is easier to learn? If I were to get Blender, how does it compare and would the skills I learn from that help me in Max or Maya? Thanks everyone!
I have used Maya, Lightwave, and Blender. From my experience I will tell you that in my opinion the best thing you could do is use blender, there are tons of resources out there to reference, and everything is free! you will learn key skills that are the base of every 3d program. the shortcuts will be different, and things like that. But, you will learn the most important things, thinking in 3d, building in 3d, etc. Blender is free, and there is no restrictions on it.
So it's created on Maya or 3Ds Max :D :S

@SkinnyMan3000 This is probably the best comparison I've ever head from this argument! It really is just a matter of preference!

I use maya and started with it also. i dont say 3ds xsi or cinema are bad ..
i just dont want to use them because i would have to relearn it all again for no reason.
so I keep maya.
predatortheme 1 year ago
@SkinnyMan3000 In my experience (I'm an animator so I'm kind of biased) Max has better tools for modeling, and Maya has the better animation tools. I've never formally used Max, so I'm really only going off of what my buddies who are learning Max in college say. But according to them, the graph editor is awful (though I've also heard it's much better now) but the modeling tools are great. I still do all my modeling in Maya because I usually only do it for quick and dirty props and sets.
Ibeechu 1 year ago
@SkinnyMan3000 so... which one's better for what? They both seem the same to me.
xxbluejay21 8 months ago
@xxbluejay21 As a lot of people have said, Max is better (though that is a such a relative word) for modeling, but Maya has some better animation tools. I also like to use Max for quickly creating text since Maya's text creation system, while not terrible, isn't amazing. Honestly, I use Maya a lot, as I started off using it, and have grown accustomed to it. But there are many tasks that Max just does a lot faster. There are so many modeling shortcuts in Max that you have to do by hand in Maya.

The winner is Autodesk Inventor

3dtraining 1 year ago
@DickKnowsBest You would want to look at either 3ds Max or Revit, with 3ds Max being the first choice if you only want to do realistic environments.

3ds Max is used a little more in the gaming industry over Maya. It always boils down to the studios preference and pipeline though.

they are both good. for a fast fast modeler 3DS max is good to model something easily and quickly. Maya will most likely create more professional works.
fuckcomments 2 years ago
Im not sure why people think that Maya is more professional. They both produce the same results in the end. Both are used on Movies (3ds Max was used on Avatar all fo the X-Men, 2012 etc and the list goes on for movies), Games, TV etc. with 3ds Max being used in a slightly wider variety of industries due to its use in the architectural and engineering fields. Its all what you like and prefer as a tool.
3dtraining 2 years ago 3
@3dtraining Well said 3dtraining. I actually started out in Maya and I came to really like it (and still do) although a while back I decided to learn max. Initially I didn't like it, just because I wasn't use to it. Now, I'm a bit better in max then I am in maya. They are so similar though, it is really easier to merge from one to the other. In the end, it's a just a tool, choose the one that you prefer to work in and stick with it. If you ever need to switch, it won't be difficult.

actually, maya was used for avatar.

rulix36 2 years ago 2
If you are going professional go Maya otherwise Max. Professionaly Maya is used more, well particularly in film. 3D Max has more of a following in the gaming industry. Max will be easier to learn but Maya can be pushed more hence its use with studios. I believe Maya's script is better for creating tools and pipeline integration aswell, adding to its usiblity in the higher-end markets of film! In a non-professional capacity Max seems to be the more popular though!

And then Blender comes out of nowhere and kills them both!!!!
But then it crashed... And because there is no auto-save they popped back to life.
spiralgear 2 years ago
i know max, but I'm gonna learn maya anyway.
why choose be greedy ;)
jagz888 2 years ago

You're going to have to learn the principles, and there is NO substitute for creativity.
victordemise 2 years ago
yeah im using blender too and i TOTALLY agree with you
its not so easy to understand in the early, but once you are in you will nearly find the tools and functions, all the big programs (c4d or whatever) claim to be the only program including this ^^
JimmyonGER 2 years ago
And one day, you'll go for an interview at a large studio, and be rejected for the position because you only use Blender, don't use Windows or Mac, and spell the letter S with a dollar sign, thus solidifying your position as an open-source toolbag.
nhavas 1 year ago
@nhavas Firstly, blender runs on every operating system you listed and more. Secondly plenty of large corporations feel it is worth their time to be involved in open source including IBM, Microsoft and Apple.

Max + plugins = Maya suck
joke.. ;))))))
Both nice 3ds programs!
TalehTAT 2 years ago
Maya is the best 3D software. It`s been used by the professionals mostly.
3ds Max is more popular but not better than Maya - not even close.
It`s been used by some professionals but also by amateurs and people without solid understanding of 3D workflow.
I work on both, and i`m telling you this from my personal experience. My coworkers share the same opinion too.

who will win based on what'?

Some of the things I prefer over the other:
3ds max: great poly modelling-tools, easy and good rendering, material editor is much better than hypershade, comfy dark UI colors :).
maya: user interface is great (especially mouse+keyboard actions), great dynamics engine and general animation tools, great nurbs modelling.

Nobody SHould Have 3ds MAx and Maya Right ?

Which program is easiest/best for beginners (like myself). I of course wouldn't be buying the full version (like $10000 for Maya) but maybe a 1 or 2 year student copy. Which is easier to learn? If I were to get Blender, how does it compare and would the skills I learn from that help me in Max or Maya? Thanks everyone!
ownage65 2 years ago
I have used Maya, Lightwave, and Blender. From my experience I will tell you that in my opinion the best thing you could do is use blender, there are tons of resources out there to reference, and everything is free! you will learn key skills that are the base of every 3d program. the shortcuts will be different, and things like that. But, you will learn the most important things, thinking in 3d, building in 3d, etc. Blender is free, and there is no restrictions on it.

3 XSI
4 3ds Max (hmmm maybe is too much)
