I suppose if your hungry enough, and on the run (being hunted in the woods by the Chinese army), it would go down pretty good...(and hopefully stay put). LOL! I like grits, and I do chow on Spam...but "boiled Spam"? Eeek. If there was a little fat to fry it in first, to get it browned a bit, it would taste a heck of a lot better IMO.
Agreed, I can only see boiling spam if it's part of a stew, beans, or pouring the broth into the grits to retain the fat and calories otherwise it should be fried.
There is no way to reconcile that fire with Leave No Trace. You could have done the same meal with a Pocket Rocket of Jetboil and avoided the environmental disaster of your fire. Good vid otherwise.
@osscouter What about the environmental impact of the petroleum fuel used for the jetboil? There is a town in Texas with high rates of cancer due to all the refineries in the area.
Wood is a renewable resource. A small camp fire doesn't do much damage to the environment.
I try to stay away from petroleum products. That's why I got a trangia alcohol stove. It will last practically forever and it uses a renewable fuel.
On the whole a camp fire does less damage than a backpacking stove.
hey I got an idea, next time you should just pile the leaves all around your campfire in the middle of the forest, you friggin moron. how the fuck you gonna put out that fire you started in a pile of leaves, surrounded by leaves.,.... MORON
Great video man, and nice recipe. I like grits just not a fan of spam, so what would you suggest I substitute the spam with? Have you tried anything else with the grits?
hey packrat thnx for the video just made this last night and i have to say wow it tastes pretty good! be safe friend keep making more camp cooking videos they really help.
That looks great! Thanks for sharing this video. May I ask how the grits taste like? For me judging the color of it looks like it has cheese inside? Sorry if my grammer is bad I just got back from school.
I love the little package of spam you had. I usually carry a can of the stuff on trips (I love it) but having a few of those individual bags would be easier. Where did you get them?
Only a dork would pay $4 for a plastic spork and use it. HaHa. You can get a real spoon and fork for like 50 cents at a yard sale and eat like a real man. What is this Toy R Us cooking gear...HaHa,
@dodoinurpants I guess that's just personal opinion. A real spoon and fork weights much more and takes up more space. This works well for me and many others. I never knew that the utensils you ate with had anything to do with the caliber of your manhood lol! To each his own.
What I like is how you use boiling water to cook. That was not said but done and it is so much easier to clean than frying that spam or "cooking" oatmeal.
Using wood for a fire break is a new one for me. I suppose it was green wood as I missed the previous video with camp setup. If I were doing the camp I probably would have cleared the area around the fire of the dry leaves and sticks.
Man I miss grits have yet to find up here in Canada a lot of foods we eat down in southern US they don't eat or have here in Canada like grits but I guess I could just use cornmeal kinda the same
hey man super cool video!!...i have a U.S.M.C. canteen cup but i dont have squishy bowls but i will be getting some soon thanks for the info....and god bless right back at ya!...romans 1.16
I see you pouring boiling water into the bowl while you hold the bowl in your hand. Is the bowl as insulated as it seems? Could I pour hot coffee in the cup while I hold it? I have hesitated buying a set because there are no handles for times when hot stuff is in the cup or the bowl. Am I wrong?
I found the bowls and cups to be a little hot on your hands. I was disapointed that they weren't as insulated as I had though they would be. I have only used mine one time but after having washed them after receiving them, they had a funky rubbery tast that I could taste in my coffee. Hopefully after use that taste will go away.
great vid. you can hear it in your voice that you truly love what you are doing. i feel the same way about the vids i make and hobbies i do. it is so fun to do it and document it for our own training like a journal but then to share it with others on here that enjoy it truly is very enjoying and rewarding. keep up the kick butt vids.
i'm a city boy but i fell in love with grits when i went to North Carolina... but i never try this grit and spam comb. i think i will enjoy this very much. thanks~
I'm from the UK and we don't have Grits here. We have Hummus which I guess is kinda similar to what you describe, other then Hummus being chickpea and Grits being corn. Thanks for answering my question.
I would say that Grits and Hummus are not comparable. Hummus is pasty, grits are just like their name gritty. Its more a cereal than Hummus. Something closer to Oatmeal but savory.
@SOFSEC1 Thank you! I appreciate that very much. I got mine through REI. They are available in the store and online as well. I think they were around $14 for the pair. They are made of silicone so they handle hot food with no problem. They clean extremely easy as well. Locke6206 has a vid demonstrating this if you are interested. Take Care.

Hey Packrat whats do you think is better for you tuna or spam??? I never tried spam but wouldnt those single serving tuna be heather??
clubtc05 2 years ago
Spam is just chopped Ham with spices. I would go for the Tuna option because of the Fish oils it contains, but fish is smelly.
Unless, of course, you subscribe to the theory of the threat of mercury poisoning from the Tuna, then I would say the Spam :)
Both are a good source of ready availability high-proteins.
LoL... SPAM was credited with saving the Soviet army during World War II and not Tuna, so I guess Spam must be better.

Forgive my stupidity but, What are Grits? Is it like instant mash potato?
Cliv3D 2 years ago 2
@Cliv3D kinda its coarsely ground corn
clubtc05 2 years ago
cliv3d: "Grits" are a type of "Gruel" made using coarse ground "Hominy"
"Hominy" is dried flint corn that has had the outer part of the kernel removed by soaking in a solution of lye and water
