Great clear coat....I'm having a real issue with mine....I'm using a spray minwax lacquer....Getting good results on the sides and neck, but getting orange peal and rough outcomes on the back and front of the body......no matter what I do....can't get a better finish...I tried on low humidy days and adjusting the spay distance....Any ideas?....Guitar looks great!!
Probably overspray from spraying the sides. I wouldn't worry about it. It should still polish out. Try wetsanding between coats a few times. Are you spraying the sides first or last?
Wetsand down to 1500 or 2000 grt. from 800 on a small spot and rub it out with some polishing compound. I bet it gets nice and shiny. As long as there is enough laquer on it.
How long did the Deft clear take to dry (between coats as well as after the final coat)? I ask because I'm only going to be able to do one side at a time and I don't want to get any marks indented when I flip it over.
Use srews to prop it up. Even when it is dry it is vulnerable to blemishes while lying down, more so if your spraying fresh lacquer around it. I used long 2-3" drywall screws, hand threaded them into parts of the non exposed body. Just enough so they won't move but aren't going to damage anything. ie neck screw holes, pickup cavity, control cavity...
Works great. Plus there is a level surface for you to spray on, less run potential.
well i made the mis tack of sanding too eary so i put another coat thinking it would hide the black spots instaed it makes it stick out so i decided to semi gloss then gloss how would that look and would it be afective
I'm not sure how you would get black spots. I don't think semi gloss would will change anything. As long as your final coats are gloss it will be glossy. You may have to fix the blemishes...
You should be able to spray lacquer over poly. I've done it several times. People often use it as a base to spray lacquer on. Try in a small spot first...
The finish is dry to touch but still not fully hard. If you start sanding and rubing polish on it, it may soften and leave streaks or maybe rub off...
Im following your guide and so far It's looking pretty good!
I'm at the step where I just waited 24 hours for the paint to dry. How often should I spray the clear coat? (I mean.. in between clear coats. Should I wait 20 minutes? or 1 day?) And when I go from the Light to Heavy coat, should I wait a few days?
Thanks for your videos, they've been extremely helpful!
If your using a high quality lacquer you should only have to wait a couple hours or even less between coats. If you going over a tinted lacquer be sure to use light coats the first three. Should be able to go to a heavier coat within 2 hours. If your using Stewmac products they should have sent a guidline with your paint also.
After finishing my last coat of lacquer (around 8 coats). I waited 1 week for the lacquer to harden and I went for the 320 wet sand to get rid of the imperfections, then my paint suddenly started to peel off??
Now I have to redo my guitar again, How come this happened? I followed your guide exactly.
Same brands of paint ? Or same brand of paint + clear?
I used the same can for paint and same can for clear. I dindt' change them, but the paint and clear is different brand though. Should I just stick with the coloured lacquer? so I don't have to buy paint can + clear lacquer?
Thanks for your reply! I hope it turns out well as well lol!
Very nice. Couple of question, when did you put your logo on the back of the headstock?
Did you apply lacquer on the back as well? I just noticed that you were leaving it on your table, so I am assuming that you didn't hang it, then spray it. How long did you let the Deft cure for, before being comfortable playing it? Thank you....
Thanks. I was goofing around with a stensil I had. I put it on before I clear coated. I cleared everything but the fretboard. I liked spraying it flat because I could get away with putting heavier coats on. I let it cure 2 or3 weeks before I polished it and assembled...
You can use any finished that are compatable with your color coats. The popular theory is that nitro lacquer is the preferred choice for instruments because of it's long lasting, non shrinking properties. Also is thought to be better for "tone" (overused guitar buzzword), because it goes on thin and is thought to "breath". I just think it looks darn good when you polish it up...
Bolt on bodies I hand screw in a few drywall screws and stand it up on them while I spray. I bolt a handel on sometimes so I can spray the whole thing, then I put the screws on so I can set it down to dry. Set necks I hold the neck while I spray it then carefully set it down dry side to dry, I only spray one side at a time. I spray the neck after I spray the back side and set it down.
its a hard thing to get a good sunburst finish, i found doing as you did getting the base colour on then sealed it before applying the darker outer, i curved up the mask to allow the darker stain to bleed under. For a even deeper colour i used 3 masks this is useful if doing a fender strat type sunburst. Great vid
Love the vids, both the cherry burst and the tiger stripe. Looking forward to future projects.
One Question, I have a similar kit from Tenayo and I keep having a problem when wetsanding the top because the water seeps in and causes the veneer to bubble. Other than being vigilent about drying the top after every small section, do you have any suggestions to avoid the bubbling?
I do regret not taking progressive photos of my project so that I can make a vid to share...
Hi, you need to make sure you are getting your clear coat on the edges of your laminant too. Any place moisture will be able to get at the cut portions as well, like pickup cutouts and control pot holes...
Get a pretty good amount of clear on before you begin wet sanding.
The answer is don't wet sand, there is ultra fine paper that you use dry. The only reason for wet sanding is to unclog the paper. After that use a rubbing compound to take out any swirll marks then final lacquer and buff.
nice work dude

Probably, follow thedirections on the can. Sounds a little cool.
jwhambone79 2 years ago
As many as it takes to level the surface, may take 15-20 passes...
Will look nice though.
jwhambone79 2 years ago
Might be able to go less between coats if your not sanding, 30 min or so. Be sure to follow the directions on the can to be sure.

320 seems a little course for final sandind. Sounds like it didn't bond for some reason. Did you use the all the same paint brands on the project?
That's a shame. Sorry that happened. Good luck finishing it.

Same all around. Should be okay as long as it's all nitro-lacquer but if your having trouble stay same same.

Hey man, did you sand in between clear coat passes?
DoranOwns92 2 years ago
Between every two or three coats I hit it with a little 800 grt wet sand. Just to knock off the orange peel...(or bugs)

Does it have to be guitar gloss or does regular wood gloss works
