Hmm as long as the Osborne effect doesn't take effect.

The Osborne effect being where a product is announced too early, and therefore nobody buys the older one in anticipation of the new model. This means the company runs out of money so cannot make the new model and just goes bankrupt.

Here is a thought..Maybe it was a prototype of a sort and it was released to gage some of the design..not the actual current design..I think it looks a lot like an ipad. That being said the ipad is great but some were disappointed by a few things some of us techies wanted and maybe this was some sort of test to see if their vision is on the right track. Maybe a false clue and it will be totally different. Just thoughts..

How is the Keynote going to look now that we already seen the device already? In Apple's eyes the first person to show their products is Steve Jobs... NOT some ugly Gizmodo blogger with is face next to the iPhone. This leaked in some ways tainted the iPhone. Apple did NOT planned this and this is troublesome to apple.

Tech promotion is COMPLETELY different. Apple is an egotistical company. they would never want to associate themselves with irresponsibility like misplacing a phone. The Apple's brand represents attention to detail. Apple does not want to associate their products in a bad light. They always had enough publicity.

its not a controlled leak, why would apple give out ANY info on purpose, as soon as ANYTHING is leaked from apple every other phone company plays catch up.

EVERY phone company will have a copy of these iPhone specs pinned to there wall now, going, "right its guna have a 5mp camera, we'll put an 8mp camera in.....its got a front facing camera, we'll put three on every side!"

I partially agree with you on the controlled leak thing. I think it isn't a controlled leak because there probably isn't enough time to make any such alterations to the design at this stage when it's only a couple of months from release however, we shouldn't make claims that apple "wouldn't" do a controlled leak in this manner. None of us work there or know exactly what goes on through steve's head. You would be surprised how far some companies go with the way they conduct their operations.

I think this prototype must be the very near finished model, why else would you stamp the iPhone/iPod stuff on the back? That's completely unnecessary, unless its as good as finished. Also why would you real world test something that is the wrong design? The real world test i surely the last thing you do, just to make sure before it goes on sale. The thing I'm surprised at is that Apple haven't rushed a pre-release of the 4g, they are effectively letting the public release their phone!

You can't rule out leak based on the fact it hasn't been done before or that they have an unstable relationship with Gizmodo. Perhaps, a leak was intended but due to the relationship between the two; they fell out and Gizmodo acted to get back at Apple/Jobs. The engineer should not have taken the "device" out to a non work related event and he ought to be punished severely.
