  • Yeah I've dyed it black in the past but I hadn't dyed my hair in six months before tonight. it just looks like I have a shit load of copper redish highlights

  • So......before the semi permanent dye the only parts that are red is like 3 inches of roots and the sides by my face....the rest is still black....

  • @Grrmylaurenx3 The sides by your face? Thats random. THe roots thing sometimes happens if you've dyed your hair black in the past, or if you use a lot of leave-in products that havent been washed out. I had a girl who uses ethnic treatments on her hair make a similar comment.

  • Comment removed

  • Do you have any advice for a girl with fine hair? I want to go red and have natural dark almost black virgin hair. I think if I were to leave the dye in my hair longer then 30 mins it would really fry it. Help! lol.

  • @Zepgirl6 Hm, I don't really know for sure, sorry :( I'd say use caution, don't leave it in too long, and try using 30 vol developer rather than 40 vol. And treat your hair to a good deep conditioning after :)

  • Ur never said what it is u put on 20 min before coloring!? Ur talking low and a whole lot about what u dont use! I do love ur hair color but tutorials is not ur thing! Im soo confused!!

  • @Anneful505 lol that's why the steps are in the description box :P

  • i have natrual red hair and its pretty tight

  • @zach1212333 cool :)

  • Ok just some tips for anyone who wants to keep their color longer (not just red). First use sulfate free shampoo. I'm telling you this will keep your color from fading . Second is, and yes I know she said this but put about 2 or3 tablespoons of your dye in your conditioner. Sometimes if you buy the box dyes they will come with a conditioner to use about 2 weeks after your coloring that will add the color pigments back to your hair. There basically the same thing. One other thing to keep your ha

  • @bailee1215 awesome tips, thanks! Except the conditioner in box dyes doesn't have dye in them. They're just deep conditioners. They're usually very good though! Also, I think your last tip truncated. Silly word limit :(

  • I dyed my hair last nite with ion light intense red and 40 vol developer and it came out way too dark red.could I try the color you use now and achieve the same results? Should I wait or not necessarily?

  • @4evaunme definitely wait. It can be really bad if you double process.

  • I think maybe you made need to re-watch your own video !

  • @dmdm52 I said there isn't peroxide and ammonia, not that there are no chemicals :P Don't get so upset, it's just a youtube video

  • Are you for real ? Hydrogen peroxide is bleach . The only way to get hair lighter is to use bleach. You seriously have just given such false information you could have effected someone's hair and especially if they have allergies.

And also semi permanent dyes also contain chemicals ! And you can get a semi permanent red that lightens the hair. I know cause I'm wearing one .

You really don't have any understanding of the hair dying process actually works.

  • @dmdm52 hair bleaching is a specific process that involves more than just the peroxide in any developer. All developer used with permanent hair dye contains peroxide. I never said that semi-permanent dye doesn't have chemicals in it...it just doesn't have high levels of peroxide and ammonia. If you have one that does, it's not truly semi-permanent.

  • I just ordered two of everything from sallys xD

50 bucks spent and hopefully i'll have red hair soon

  • @Grrmylaurenx3 good luck!

  • Wait im confused. When do you use the peroxide? it's not in the step by step thingy D:

  • @Grrmylaurenx3 the developer has peroxide in it.

  • @Thedon91671 peroxide isn't bleach. Bleach has peroxide in it, but lightening hair sirens't always mean bleaching it. :)

  • @kissmmysass123 exactly :)

  • I thuagt u said without bleach? Ure lighteng ure hair therfore bleaching it?

  • @Thedon91671 bleaching is a very specific process specifically intended for lightening hair, and is WAY more damaging than the lightening that happens during the process of permanent hair dyeing. The lightening that happens during dyeing is sometimes called "lift".

  • I LOVE THAT HEAT PROTECTANT! i'm so surprised you didn't rave about it! i've tried the ever so famous tresemme heat protectant and it dried my hair out so much! the one you mentioned is more oil based but makes my hair amazing and soft and ahh! only on the ends though! all other sprays i've used have alcohol in them which dries out my hair! i would recommend that to anyone, and it's cheap! i have read hair but a tad brighter and this video helped a bit! thanks! x

  • @tynicole12 yeah, it's a really good one. I got it because of the excellent reviews online, and the masses haven't let me down!

  • What if I dye my hair black? >,< Getting it red, maybe just bleach a little then do red over top?

  • @MrKanojo I'm confused. You mean if your hair was dyed black before?

  • @scubascissors It was dyed black, I just got it red. :3

  • Showed*

  • Can you get the every first bottle that you found us in Sally's? And do you put it all over your head?

  • @seutaworld yep to both!

  • My hair used to look like yours when I first had it done in November. I've had to dye it twice since then. It's been a month and the color has already faded and I need a touch up. Instead of going to the salon again I wanted to do it myself. Your video is honestly the best one I've seen so far as to how to dye my hair red. I just had a question..it might seem stupid but here it goes. After applying the permanent dye, do I wash that out then apply the semi permanent dye for another 30 mins?

  • @JAN3Y93 the semi is optional. If you like the color of the perm, I'd say just skip it entirely. But if you do use it, definitely wash out the permanent dye first :)

  • The Giovanni Direct Leave-in absorbs fully and doesn't cause any build up. I wash my hair once a month just because it looks fuzzy.

  • Also, DEVA Care is a great product for color treated hair. Wonderful information. Thanks so much. Try not to use a sulfate shampoo b/c they strip color and natural moisture. I use the Avalon Organic Lemon Clarifying Conditioner to cleanse my hair and it keeps my color wonderfully. My bf loves it even though his hair is straight and not color treated.

  • @artchick07 Hm, I've never heard of these products. I'll have to look them up! Thanks!

  • @artchick07 Oh cool, i've never heard of that!

  • lol your funny, "this one smells like butt!! ughh"

  • @bambimoore1 lol well it does!

  • is your hair color the color on the video?or is it redder? like clown red or Rhianna red?sry i know the video might make it lighter or darker

  • @tehvolcomgurl22 What's the difference between clown red and Rihanna red?

  • @scubascissors i meant or sry

  • @scubascissors like i know they are both the same i was meant as same example

  • @tehvolcomgurl22 OH. I see. Sorry, I parsed that incorrectly. It was a wee bit brighter in real life, but not terribly so.

  • @scubascissors ok thank you for your help:)

  • I really want red hair. I love your hair! I'm just curious as to how often I would be having to dye my hair. I exercise 4-6 times a week. I couldn't see not washing my hair every day that I work out. What do you suggest?

  • @DulceLafarga Depends. How tolerant are you of faded hair? The color changes with every wash. But unless you need to lift virgin roots, you can just use temp dye as often as you want. Which might be pretty often if you wash it 4 to 6 times a week.

  • do you know any products that wash out after like 30 washes? i have hair like yours (black) and i would like it your type of red, please answer! :) thank you!!!

  • @TheNewChica 30 washes? You're lucky if you get 10 :P

  • Could i used the Dark intense red blonde colour instead or the light intense red blonde? i've checked sallys website and they don't have the medium. Which one would make it go lighter the dark intense or light intense? i dont want it to go ginger though:)?

  • @JasonDeruloCantSing could i use*

  • @JasonDeruloCantSing I'm not quite sure I understood that, but i haven't tried the dark intense red blonde so i can't really say anything about it. Sallys does have the medium intesnse red blonde - I think I misspoke in the video, sorry.

  • If you wash your hair with conditioner, how does your hair not become insanely greasy?

  • @FutureWisdom You have to let it sit for a while, so the emulsifiers in the conditioner also work in the oil in your hair - that way it'll rinse out, and your hair won't get greasy. Be sure to really rinse though!

  • hey this was so helpful:)! what shop did you buy the ion red hair colour permanent dye from? and can i just go straight from black to this medium red blonde?

  • @JasonDeruloCantSing it's from sally's. You can go straight from virgin black hair to medium intense red blonde. If it's dyed black, you might have trouble.

  • Oh and you can wash your hair as much as you want. Just wash it in ice cold water with a color safe shampoo

  • @678blowpop It still fades out in cold water with colorsafe shampoo. That's just how reds are. It'll fade in cold water without shampoo.

  • @678blowpop Yeah I agree with @scubasciccors and one a side note, "color safe" shampoos aren't that great. Even sulfate free still will strip, but they are seemingly better imo. I love conditioner washing, but I have a trick. I have a mixture of Ion conditioner, red semi permanent dye, (proclaim) argan oil hair masque, and 3 pumps of sulfate free shampoo all mixed into one bottle. It may sound crazy, but it's done a pretty good job of maintaining color, softness, and cleansing.

  • ooh! your hair is the exact color I want. I have virgin dark brown hair atm

  • @Saroarr I think it should work fine - that was about the color mine was too when i started

  • I've had red hair before, and I love it. It brings out my greenish yellow eyes. (: Just wondering, my hair is currently a dyed dark brownish colour. Will this routine work on hair that is THAT dark? I know all of the Ion products are found at Sally's, is this where you purchase everything? And also, is the color of your hair in person the same as in the video when you made it? I know some cameras effect the lighting on a lot of reds, and I really love this colour.

  • @haleyyanakotta I think depending on how dark it is, it might work. I know that's not much of an answer, but it really depends. I did get everything at Sally's, and in person I think my hair was a bit brighter than it was in the video, but not by all THAT much.

  • I was really curious about this, but how do you not get dandruff from not washing your hair a lot and using so much product on your hair? I have sooo much dandruff and I wash my hair every third day!

  • @Myobokuuzan Huh, I wish I could be more help here, but I've never had a dandruff problem no matter how much or little I wash my hair :\

  • @scubascissors Awe, you're so lucky! I used the riveting red's shampoo and it didn't really make my hair flake up as much, but my red hair colour seemed to be fading o_o probably because I didn't use the matching conditioner xD

Do you think any shampoos that have ginger extract in them will be okay for dandruff and colour treated hair?

  • @Myobokuuzan Actually, the color is probably fading from being washed every day. Red does that. I have no idea bout the ginger though - I tend not to use shampoo anymore

  • @scubascissors :O you don't use shampoo anymore? Or just not AS much? xD I'm guessing your hair is so used to not producing as much oil now right?

  • @Myobokuuzan Nope, I don't use it at all anymore :)

  • Lighting tip- shine the light on a white wall next to you instead of directly at your face and it will imitate natural light. Oh and your hair color is awesome :D

  • @JermzzzyFTW If only there were white walls :(

  • @TheRockingpitbull so true. so very, very true.

  • my hair is naturally dark brown, i bleach my whole hair blonde, later after a few months i dyed it black permanent (yes stupid of me) so i wanted to know if you have any advice for me i want to go red not a bright red, something like yours, without damaging my hair a lot, my hair is damaged from the ends. ;P

  • @GabyAdorkable Meep. How long ago was it dyed black? I don't really have a whole lot of experience getting black dye out to be honest. You could just strand test the process in the video and see how it works out. My ends were actually black too, but it had been about 6 months, probably more, since I had last dyed it.

  • @scubascissors the last time i dyed it was about 5 months ago. ill try this out then see if it works, thanks.

  • I hadn't thought of doing my hair red until I saw this video. Thanks :)

  • @xxxxxxshakixxxxxxxx Good luck!

  • Thank you so much for all these helpful tips, I'm a guy whose slowly getting into dying my hair and I've wanted deep red hair for a few years now. I honestly didn't know how much it was gonna take to keep it an awesome shade, so thanks again for the honesty and helpful tips! It definitely got me to subscribe!

  • @dmanlax1 yeah, red hair is not a color for people on the fence. Keeping up with it is a bit of a commitment. Thanks for stopping by!

  • crap load of crap....lmao

  • @scubascissors advice for mane n tail shampoo and conditioner

  • @teehee2147 I don't like them, but they're cheap.

  • advice for hicolor red? im super scared to do red hair but i want it without bleach so i've been looking into loreal hicolor what do u think?

  • @teehee2147 Heh, I talked about that specific dye in the video :P

  • OMG! I love your video! so helpful! That's a beautiful color and you look gorgeous! I have a question though, I have short black hair like it's short on the sides and long(ish) on top and the top has blonde highlights after bleaching it. I was wondering if I decided to follow suit and dye my hair red, would the blonde streaks turn out pink? People keep talking about blonde hair turning out pink and I was wondering if you had any pointers. Thanks!

  • @supjus2hot Hmm, I'm not sure about that one - i've never had blonde streaks. Sorry, but I might not be much help here :(

  • What would happen if I dyed my medium brown hair a turquoise blue withought bleach? I don't want to bleach my hair but I don't want to permnently dye my hair either. Would the colour turn out okay or would it be extremely dark?

  • @catsaretimtams It would be tinted. I've done stuff like that before, but the color isnt true to what the bottle looks like. It'll probably give your hair a bluish tint for a while though.

  • SO I DNT GET IT WEN U PT THAT BOTTLE U DNT MIX IT WIT ANY THING LET IT SIT 20MINS THEN U DYE UR HAIR LIKE REGULAR WIT OUT WASHING THE BOTTLE U PT FRIST???

  • @LADYSPOOKY2009 Woah, I don't think I understood that. I think you have it right though. You mean the protein filler? I put it in for 20 minutes, and don't wash that out - then I use the permanent dye on top of it.

  • After you put in the ion dye, do you rinse it out, let it dry and then put on the beyond the zone dye?

  • @Myobokuuzan Sometimes. Usually I just rinse it out, towel-dry, and then put in the BTZ. But definitely rinse out the permanent dye

  • @scubascissors Oh, I see so I can't put on that beyond the zone dye in about 1-2 weeks after dying my hair? It's a semi-permanent dye right? And can you apply it onto dry hair?

  • @Myobokuuzan you can put it in whenever you want. Lots of people DO use it 1-2 weeks after as a color refresher. And yes, it's a semi-permanent dye. You can apply it to dry hair, sure. I usually like my hair damp though, but it might be personal preference.

  • @scubascissors Ohh I see. Thanks!

  • If I want a really dark red hair color, should I use a 20 or 10 vol developer? My hair is naturally black but I've dyed it many times from shades of brown to black again and ive got brown roots due to a mishap...

  • @Alisaaaish Hm, I'd actually say probably just go with a different dye entirely - one that's closer to the shade you really want.

  • HEY so yea i kinda want to dye my hair with Ion color Brillance my HAIR IF LIKE REALLY JET BLACK will it work ?

  • @Skinstea naturally that dark? Dyed is tricky - sometimes the color doesn't lift

  • Did it take a couple times of repeating this dying process for your hair to get this bright? I tried doing it, but it isn't really like yours -__- I don't know if it's because I already have a permanent red dye in my hair but it's a dark red but I hadn't dyed it since August so I don't know...lol sorry so many questions.

  • @xiirosary I dyed a few times before, but with other brands.

  • -what was the name of the product u said u lave in 4 20 min b4 u dye it?

  • @nanaa214dqaf the protein filler? All the steps are in the description box :)

  • my permanent colour says ammonia free, so :3

  • @j0mie Yep, sometimes instead of ammonia there are other things added in order to raise the cuticle. The effect is the same though.

  • @scubascissors your hair looks amazing btw. im now redoing my own, because the first dye didnt work so well. it just highlighted parts. so im going ginger for reals, like right now :D

  • you can also put the filler to your shampoo keeps the red hair

  • @lilflippyta2062 That's a pretty good tip, but I've found that using filler in shampoo isn't as good as either avoiding shampoo entirely or using filler in the conditioner.

  • as far as dry shampoo goes, Klorane is the best. ever. and it DOESN'T leave white residue. it's the only one i've tried that doesn't. even the "invisible dry shampoos" don't work as well as Klorane.

  • @thenQUYNHsaid Oh hey, thanks for the tip! I've never tried that one before, but I'll look it up :)

  • I have a question. Do you mix the Ion color with another color and use them both for the 30 min together? This part of the video confused me. Can you use that Ion stuff with like Affinage B-Red?

  • @Never2late4beauty I've never used affinage b-red, so I can't really say, sorry :( . Sometimes I do mix dyes though, but always the same kind of dye - permanent dyes which have to be mixed with developer. Sometimes math is involved in determining how much developer to use though depending on the ratios specified on the packaging.

  • @Never2late4beauty kk tyvm.

  • thank you so much i just dyed my hair red yesterday and i was wondering how to keep its color, now do i mix some of the dye with shampoo? or mix dye with conditionar?

  • @ChrisxMidnightxBlue conditioner. I wouldn't really bother with shampoo - it's not really necessary. Just leave the conditioner in for a while and rinse thoroughly.

  • @scubascissors ok thank you! if i didnt watch this today i probably wouldnt have known! :) i just mixed some of the semi dye with conditionar and ill do what you say thank you!!!!!!

  • @ChrisxMidnightxBlue Cool, good luck!

  • yeah, this hairstylist dude tried to tell me i had to bleach my hair after dying my hair my natural brown color. I was so pissed i cant stand how they try to bullshit you just to get more money out of you. i had my hair red for over a year until i deployed and couldnt maintain it, and no one ever had to bleach my hair for it to be red.

  • @redchicka407 yeah, salons are sometimes mostly salespeople. which sucks, because sometimes they can actually give great advice.

  • You should try to put a semi permanent in your conditioner so you could help keep the color.

  • @lovelesslover4u Yep, I mentioned that both in the video and in the description box :P

  • @scubascissors Oh lol sorry I did not see or hear it

  • @lovelesslover4u at like 12:15. I wanted to find it for you, sorry for the double response.

  • If you use cold water it helps the cuticle stay closed :3

  • @Pelicanmcgee YES, THANKS! I totally forgot to mention that. Thumbs uped so hopefully other people can see :)

  • Anime Boston FTW!

  • if you bleach your hair is it okaii to put a permenant dye ontop of it the day after?

  • @xXxRedBambixXx I wouldn't. It's totally fine to put semi-perm or temp on top of bleached hair right after though :)

  • what is the product you used first? I'm confused haha

  • @TheHorsefreakforever Haha, that's why I put the process in the comments section ;P. But I use the protein color filler first, since my hair is already dyed. If it's not, you can skip it.

  • @scubascissors oh okay, but for the future, is there a certain like bottle you like to use of it?

  • @TheHorsefreakforever Bottle of what? Color filler?

  • @scubascissors haha yea

  • im soo happy i found this video :) ive been wanting to dye my hair red but now im thinking abt it.. jst bcuz i kno ill be lazy to maintain it lol.. i loved ur video :) great job hehe

  • @dreyna24 Yeah, it's definitely work to maintain. If you dye it bright red and don't take care of it, it'll get kindof dingy looking within a few days.

  • so...if i dyed my hair black..then this wont work?

  • @prttygyrl7 Maybe, maybe not. It's harder with black dye because it doesn't always come out. There are tons of videos on YT though from girls with more experience with removing black dye :)

  • I bought 30 volume developer but the sales lady at sally said 20 is recommended.. now I'm afraid to dye my hair. I have naturally dark brown hair.. should I go back and get 20 volume or stick with 30?

  • @soshethinks You're fine with 30. If your hair is SUPER fine then maybe go get 20, but I've never really heard of anyone having a problem with 30 unless your hair has other issues (like maybe it's super super super super damaged or something)

  • this is not a boring video its informative!

  • @MrsBluidgrl Thanks! I'm glad you think so :) I know it's a lot of details though...more than some people want to know XD

  • @scubascissors oh ok I'll wait. Thank you so much for your advice! Oh and this video was sooooo helpful :)

  • @Kayleigh087 If it's boring, why keep watching?

  • @Kayleigh087 umm you can't wash your hair that much when you have red hair, just an FYI..

  • Okay so I wanna try this whole process on my hair and I'm hoping I get the same color. But I have a concern, I JUST dyed my naturally black hair with a box color the nutrisse ultra creme thing. I wanted it to be red but that didn't happen. So I was wondering will this process work on my hair, I read somewhere you can't dye your hair a perm. color if u JUST dyed it with a perm. color. Do I have to wait cuz I really don't wanna wait cuz I'm stubborn and want my hair red now lol

  • @dearBrielle112 Sorry, but I'd recommend waiting - you could do some SERIOUS damage to your hair by chemically treating twice, and then you're stuck with it until you cut it off. Overly processed hair gets all rubbery and stretchy and snaps off REALLY easily - it becomes impossible to blow dry or straighten, and even brushing it becomes difficult because every time you try, it stretches and snaps. And it can't be repaired. There's stuff that helps, but it'll never be back to normal.

  • do you think the Ion dye will work on my hair that is dyed black right now? (:

  • @wonkerz266 It might, but you'll probably have a bit of trouble going over the black, especially if it was somewhat recently dyed. I used ion over black dye, but it had been several months (and it STILL didn't totally come out...)

  • @scubascissors I have naturally dark hair so I had been looking for a video like yours! I loved how much you explained, the best red hair how to on youtube! I just did it last night but it didn't turn out as light as I wanted, I was nervous about how long I was leaving it on for so I may have rinsed too quickly, I didn't want to dye it again too soon. How long should I wait until I try again to get a better red? And do I switch to the 30 VOL next time?

  • @bugshine0507 I leave it in for 30 minutes, sometimes more, sometimes less depending on how damaged it is, and when I tried last. I'd say wait at LEAST two weeks, but optimally four. What vol did you use this time?

  • @scubascissors I used the 40VOL this time, my hair is stubborn!

  • @bugshine0507 If there wasn't too much damage you could probably use 40 again, just be conscious of it and don't leave it in for TOO long. Ive used 40 more than once, until my hair was light enough.

  • the one you use is only a medium red-blonde? Not the medium intense red-blonde? I use the intense one! :D and it's SO AWESOME! I love the liquid one :P

  • @Myobokuuzan Yeah, i use the medium intense one - I misspoke in the video, but I THINK i corrected it in the description box XD. It IS awesome!

  • You are so adorable!! And thanks, this helped me a lot :)

  • @Klutella Yay, thanks! I'm glad you got some use of it!

  • your awesome

  • @cheesymate thanks!

  • in the process of dying it now! using your video step by step, I just put the protein filler on... haha I'm so excited!

  • @xoxot22 fingers crossed!

  • @scubascissors how many guys do you see with blood red hair

  • @ghost9431 Hmm, actually, not a whole lot. But don't let that stop you!

  • @scubascissors i know i was just wondering

  • @ghost9431 I know a few guys in the punk scene that dye their hair red. And one photographer.

  • @scubascissors i am in the punk scene how long does it take to die your hair
