Wonderful video, and made even more so by its link to George Carlin. That guy was just unstoppable. And frankly, I would have loved to have seen any dedicated theist meet Carlin in open debate. It would have been an unfair contest of wit, I think.
the idea that just because some people who claim to be pro life are uncharitable does not make the pro life idea false, that seems to be what you are saying. if i said that because some muslims are violent haters of westeners makes all Islam an evil plot i would be called a racist, but when the targets of the same idea are Christian teachings apparently that is ok.
Without involving religion in the pro-life/pro-choice argument.. There is much debate as to when exactly a 'clump of cells' becomes 'human'. If the foetus is regarded as human, abortion technically becomes murder. Simple as that. So why do you think, if there is no black and white answer as to when these cells become 'human', the benefit of the doubt is given to the pro-choice argument and the potential human is allowed to be murdered?
I appreciate that you encourage people to think hard about issues, even if you have no "original" ideas. Far too many people get their first thoughts handed to them and go no further. Even without new ideas, there is a great deal of people for whom the old ideas appear new.
The important thing is to continually test and challenge even our basic premises.
Here in Poland all the tv stations are now talking about how about ten thousand polish women go to UK to have abortions and how it should be stopped. And I am really f-ing sick of this country. Not long ago our parliament passed a bill according to which forcing people to pay respect to religious symbols in governmental buildings (be placing them there) is protecting the freedom of religion. And then there are the blasphemy laws, religion grades on school certificates, and...
@karablak1 i voted thumbs up because that makes Poland even more awesome. Poland was formed with catholicism at its center the country owes its survival to the Church of the Middle Ages and has traditionally been almost 100% Catholic. when religion is so important to the entire community like that all of those measures make sense. its community trying to preserve itself and its culture and heritage.
There are a lot of superstitious, pro-life nuttos here in the states, most of which don't really care about the prerservation of human life. They like to inject large amounts of sensationalism into the issue, and use it to score political points. They have little to say about the wars in which we are always tangled. As long as our troops are killing large amounts of brown-colored non-christians, the thousands of Americans that die as well are perfectly acceptable to them.
'Women are human beings and deserve every right to do as they please with their bodies.' Is a flawed argument. It's not their body that they are destroying! It's their baby's body, which has a human-right to be born. Why is this so hard for people to grasp?
Actually we had (still have?) groups here in America that will set a pregnant girl up in a barracks like room with other pregnant girls, feed them, clothe them, pray for them...
and then after the birth kick both mother and child out onto the street.
I still marvel at how clever it was of England to ship all of their religious nuts over to the states back when.
The priest deserves some respect; I could really empathize with his exasperation! Perhaps if more of his brethren shared his outlook then the catholic church might be a force for good in the world...
George Carlin was just ... er George Carlin! Fantastic.
I recently came under the category of Pro-choice, but I have to say that it was under the idea that adoration is a healthy or truly moral thing. It's not the greatest concept since slice bread. It's necessary, definitely, I wouldn't support it on a personal level, but on national level.
That being said, I got out of pro-life by going to a pro-life rally in Washington DC. Those people are fucking crazy and emo. So massive emotional that reason is total ignored. They scared me...
There is no limit on Religious Advertisement in the UK, at least, I can see no good reason that there would be. The lack of religious advertising is mainly a lack of funding, television ad's are expensive, and the contraception ones are from the government ones. There is plenty of religious advertising in cheaper media (Radio, Billboard, Bus side)
Here in Washington, DC, we are visited every Jan. 22 by fleets of busloads of protesters demanding that the Supreme Court overturn the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that recognized a woman's right to terminate her pregnancy. They carry professionally printed signs (some picturing dismembered fetuses) and hang out on the plaza in front of the court building all day. I'll bet the money they spend on these "cheap thrill" abortion protests could do a lot of genuine good, if spent on relief for Haiti.
The is an abortion clinic near me that seems to have a permanent encampment of "concerned citizens" outside. I have often thought that their time might be better spent raising money for the unfortunate girls who need the facility rather than shaming them or making them feel guilty. I suspect that the hour or two on the picket line is sufficient to affirm their own virtuousness rather than actually donating their time or money to help those less fortunate that happen to reside outside a uterus.
Here in the US we have many religious advertisements on TV. Recently a new one has been put out by needhim (dot) org. It's a rather disgusting ad, at least to me. They have an endless barrage of idiots that tell you that we can't live this life "alone" and we all "need" Jesus in our lives and at the end is the web address. I've been to it... It's laughable.
Great video on a difficult topic. I always enjoy your opinions :)
An excellent video indeed. I agree with you on advertising safe sex in various forms. But let´s not forget the value of dedicated teachers who inform their students about sex in a practical and honest way. Where no one leaves the classroom until they can properly handle a condom and where the school- nurse has a close contact with the local gynecologists and makes sure the information gets through. Also, we had clear blue skies and sunshine for the past two days here in the southwest of Sweden.
Safe, legal, accessible abortion is the hallmark of a society that cares about the realities of peoples lives rather than the unreality of some notion of *sanctity*. Which, as George so brilliantly says, is a concept of inconsistent application:)
since prehistory, in the event of an inauspicious conception, perhaps by rape or during times of drought, famine or siege, women knew and chose ways to trigger miscarriage or perform abortions. in the middle ages the decision to bear a child could not be mothers' alone. the decision would be taken collectively, by the woman and her elders,& the outcome of any conception had to be based on how prepared the woman & her whole group could be to support another child through hard, uncertain times.
But you'd be making the same old arguments in a chipper and friendly, upper class accent. It goes a long way I assure you; you're the sort of kindly, older gentleman that you love to run in to.
In fairness to the Christians who wouldn't act, in my experience, it takes a lot for human beings to put their money where their mouths are in any context. Sad but I think true.
I suspect that the chief reason that the abortion laws will not see limited limiting change in this country is that, however they are dressed, the arguments are ultimately based upon faith and to its credit, our government does a better job than most of keeping that out of legislation.
You're right, of course, but they are a useful shorthand for points of view that can be refined by further discussion. So, although I am 'pro-choice', I still think that contraception is the better preliminary! Prevention better than cure in this case.
Me and my fiance have discussed what would happen if we learned she was pregnant and we agreed we would ideally like to be a bit older but if we could support the kid and it wasn't risking her life we probably wouldn't get an abortion because we do want a kid and both have stable jobs.
You had to give your opinions when you were at school?
Weird, when I was a school we had to write about both points of view on a subject and why it's a valid point and then sum up and say which you thought was correct, which would always be some kind of comprise if you wanted good marks.
This was the case at my school also but I was either too stupid or lazy to dredge up abstract arguments from my torpid brain, let alone contrasting notions from both sides!
Towards the end of my school life I started watch youtube and get introduced to atheism and scepticism and got rather opinionated and when it came to writing about creationism, and so the "for" sections for things I disagreed with got pretty sarcastic.
My personal take on abortion is that women who are facing an unwanted pregnancy, either through rape, complications or other considerations, should have the choice. Religion needs to be left out of the equation however. This is not to say that young women should be allowed to have one after another to avoid pregnancy through carelessness. In these cases sterilization should be suggested.
