I saw a gul doing just that in Newquay. This video almost looks like the very spot! They do get a bad press unfortunately because they make the most of our wastefulness. I agree that they are intelligent and charming. It is upsetting how people can be so cold and treat them as if they are scum.
omg same thing happened 2 me except it was a squirrel who knocks on my glass door of my backyard. wen it sees me coming with food, it politely backs up and waits for me to open the door to feed him. LOL so polite.
I love Gulls, Love to watch them fly and soar on the wind. Our local Herring Gulls are quite intelligent. And I know that's due to their opportunistic nature, and the fact that they don't migrate. Apparently they can live more than forty years! Most of the time they scavenge, so if everything we threw away was edible, there'd be no mess left.
@birdman2ns Hear hear!! I have reared 2 lots of abandoned babies and they are beautiful, comical, intelligent birds. Even steal my dog toys to play with!!
A few times each week, I take my bread scraps down to the beach and feed the seagulls. I've been doing this for months & have come to recognize a couple of them. They are so interesting and funny that I've actually started enjoying their company during my lunch hour. They've caught the bread when I throw it, they take turns waiting for the next piece. They are much more intelligent than we give them credit for.
Gulls are extremely intelligent, with a 35+ year lifespan, PLENTY of time for them to observe human behavior and present to us behavior that favors being feed. Also, the gull species has evolved for survival much longer than that of a mammal, such as a human. These gulls can consume both salt and fresh water. Gulls are extcellent scavangers, and are happy to leve near humans.
I have a family of Herring Gulls (two adults and two youngsters) living with me. The adults nested on the balcony outside my bedroom window. I feed them when they beg for food, and one of the youngsters pecks the window if I don't take any notice of his begging calls.
It's really nice to see there are others out there who see gulls in a better light than most. I feed the seagulls as often as I can, despite signs being up telling us not to. I just think they are gorgeous, misunderstood, intelligent birds.
.....I hope you will take a squiz at my video(its a bit crude, and over long as have no idea about video editing and it is the first I have uploaded)as it shows how clever these birds are and how good their eyesight is(snatching bread in mid air)
,.............I have mysef become quite fond of a Herring Gull, I have even named him Twitchy, Herring Gulls have a lot of character and I agree theydo get a bad press, lets face it, WE are the interlopers in their world, fact that we built in thier nesting grounds, gives us little rights to complain when they use their adaptability by using our buildings to roost ,.....
Ive found that holds true for most wild animals. They are far more intelligent than most people want to admit because if they did, people as a whole would have to feel guilty about the way humans treat them. Love your video.
these gulls are extremely intelligent and are interested in people who present to them food regularly. Though they allow humans near them, they would not let you lay hand on them. Thank you for posting!
I love seagulls...wish I lived by the beach
