@supergouken1 Her grave was removed by the Jackson County Historical Society some years ago and up until recently kept in the basement of the Jackson Police Department because it kept getting vandalized. But I was told not too long ago that they actually put it in the museum and you can see it there. As for where shes actually buried, I'm not entirely sure, I found both her father and mother's markers but I have no clue where her's is at.
I love this legend! Something you might be interested to know is that Jan Evertsen Terwilliger immigrated to America from Holland in 1663. He was THE Terwilliger and progenitor of all the Terwilligers throughout North America. In fact, the spelling "Twilegar" is the most mutated spelling of the name that exists today. The pronunciation is, Ter - will - e- ger.
When I was little I used to talk to a little girl named Mary Jane. She was my best friend and I didn't realize she was a ghost until my parents asked me who I was talking to.
My great great uncle was Walter Neitzel and he had a shop in loon lake and he would take kids down to the grave and scare tourists and teens and he would make sound effects and try to scare the people that he took down there.
@Itsyogurljazzy I think it's just the top of the fence. And actually its not big at all, just the tall grass and trees make it seem a bit disorientating
i used to live at loon lake on the other side by the golf course when i was younger! i actually never heard of mary jane until i was about 11 and was camping at Robertson (campground by the gravesight). went out during the night (which doesn't aparantly doesn't happen anymore bc they close it at night.) ive lived in jackson county my entire life, only been out to the graveyard that once and i actually never set foot on it. eerie feeling about it. (and the stories creeped me out XD)
Ahh that's a cool video.. I want to go but I'd be so nervous xD. Had to of been cool to walk around that place though :) it's kind of sad though.. it's all abandoned and would be forgotten if not for the ghosts :(
Thankfully I was tick free, I wish they would mow that place :P Heres a link to a map, I'm not sure at how good it will do you :P I suck at directions, if only I could remember the name of the campground the cemetery breaks off from that would help alot :P
It's been about 20 years since I have been up to the cemetery. Too many ticks! There were still many headstones at that time and I have lots of pictures. I am sure I have the one with the poem on it. Some people claim it is a curse, but if you read the words without thinking about all of the witchcraft mumbo jumbo (and witch hunts were not going on in the 1800's in Minnesota!) you will realize the true meaning of it. We all die, and as those at Loon Lake lie in their graves, so will we one day.
Oh the "Come my friends as you pass by as you are now so once was I" poem? Yea, I didnt necessarily think that was a curse, in fact, that saying was used on many gravestones during that time period. Its also on the Stoneking marker in Stoneking Cemetery, I forgot what town in Iowa its in at. But very true nontheless, from birth we are dying, still kind of an eerie saying though. And I agree, LOTS of ticks, I made the mistake of wearing shorts They really need to take care of that place better
I found John Twilegars grave on my second visit, it took a while and I made the mistake of wearing shorts...i had to avoid some spots to avoid ticks but I found it, overshadowed by bushes and a large tree branch. Your probably right about her not being a witch, but it makes you wonder how the "legend" got started. That and what of Clarinda Allen and the supposed "third witch" out there.
Nice video. To bad it was so windy when you went out. But that is how it goes. I have gone up to this cemetery a few times over the years and have always found it interesting to check out. It is sad to see all the vandalism that has happened over the years. I was reading your info you posted and was curious why the jackson county historic society won't let people see the grave of Mary-Jane. Maybe I read it wrong. Also, any idea where the other two witches are buried?
Im not really sure why they dont let people see it, I've just read that the historicle society holds it for safe keeping to prevent vandalism, Ive also heard that its kept in the basement of the Jackson police station, so either way its hard to tell. I was unable to find the graves of the other two suspected witches...people claim theres still about 18 stones left in the cemetery out of an original 100, but i swear theres only about 10 left. Theres more missing every time i visit.
Ive been going to loon lake cemetery since i was a kid, I even went July 29, when I went to visit family in Okoboji. My dad went to Spirit Lake High and he told me kids used to go there and get drunk and party, and one time they wanted to steal a grave stone, so they put it in there car, long story short, the car would not start until they put it back in the spot they got it from. I dont think its a very scary cemetery, just in the middle of BFE, also, its in Minnesota, not Iowa.
I've been there about 4 or 5 times or so, the story of the place has always intrigued me. I havent really had any paranormal experiences there. but its just an eerie place to be when your alone, day or night, especially as you get deeper into the brush. Every time I've shown up theres been an extra grave knocked over, its sad really. As for there being witches buried there, I dont know, but paranormal occurences? heck yes.
that's because that's all in your mind...fucking bullshit we have the same stuff here where i live supposedly this house is haunted just a few blocks from me because it was once used as a nazi police HQ station in ww2 and a whole bunch of people got murdered in the basement, superstitious bullshit that's all there is to it,you know voices in the air as you walk outside of it at night and all that kind of crap
Lovely, your opinions are respected but you could atleast try to put a little effort in respecting the opinions of those who actually believe in these things.

@PSPOD Yup, bassist Dave Ellefson grew up in Jackson, Minnesota and wrote the song "Mary Jane" after hearing of this legend.

We visited the cemetery at night. We found it to be rather peaceful and serene. Nothing evil.
