The Persuaders theme is a brilliant music peace, however, even when I was listening when the show was aired I was feeling a deep blue tone in it, and I still do. It is almost like a sour sadness.
Rest In Peace Tony Curtis, such a great actor. "The Persuaders", known as "Dos Tipos Audaces" in Latin America was just an awesome TV serie which will stay engraved on my memory. That takes me back to unforgettable moments!!
R.I.P Tony .. The Persuaders aka "Amicalement Votre" in French is my all time favorite TV show ... and best TV theme as well ... Curtis & Moore .. a fantastic duo ..
Tony Curtis born Bernard Schwartz (June 3, 1925 – September 29, 2010) Rest In Peace. A totally irreplaceable American actor... I always will think of him when I hear this theme music. It's very fitting. His parents were Hungarian Jewish immigrants. His father was a tailor and the family all lived in the back of the shop. From the school of hard knocks and humble beginnings.
RIP Tony Curtis. For me as a kid growing up in the 70's, i remember Tony best in this CLASSIC series. And what a theme tune! One of the best of all time, no doubt about it
The opening credits of this programme, with John Barry's superb score, is I think the best ever title sequence in the history of TV. Brilliant the way the early pics of Curtis & Moore in their childhood and doing military service are worked in.
You're right, humbleradio! The whole back story revealed in a simple but brilliant title sequence plus one of the great TV themetunes ever.
Last night on TV I watched an episode of 'Flashpoint' - all unnatural (but optically addictive) lighting and cut, cut, cut, cut, cut multi-camera angles propping up a threadbare script. After that I saw a 'Movie Tip' trailer for 'Inception' - ahem ......
' ,,,no matter how hard they try.' ? I don't think they ARE trying. Too wrapped up in the hi-tech!
@heru1966 At first I'd say, probably not, since it's a very common phrase, but then again, one never knows. Things have to start somewhere, and it may be, like you suggest, that he watched it, and decided to take it from there.
Allthough the basic idea is different, there are similarities to Miami Vice 15 years or so later in this opening scene, fast cars and boats and women :)
when I was in HK this was the highlight of the week . No filth or obscene language ..the best ever.. How I wish I could turn the clock back...Great post
Yup. As for turning the clock back, we hear ya! Just looking at comments on Youtube I am convinced there are millions out there who feel the same way, who long for good productions like Persuaders, etc.. I think if we insist on quality, and not watch/spend our money on crap, we will send a powerful message and once again be proud of the stuff dreams are made of.
@cinematedman It's so easy for younger people to get completely the wrong idea about shows like this. They were sending themselves up at the very time they were being made. Entertainment was the name of the game. However, the production values were usually very high, and the technical crews on these shows were brilliant.
Without doubt the best tv theme ever written from one of the masters, John P Barry.........unforgettable tv series starring my childhood hero, Roger Moore
these excellent itc classics are timeless . shot on film meaning the picture quality on the dvd releases are outstanding . i have all the dvd sets incl . the baron . man in a suitcase.the champions. department s . all with great them tunes & incidental music . pure 1970's nostalga . what a contrast to the garbage of today .
do we still get this technique in contemporary crime drama where the drama is in with the bad guys? it all seems to be from the perspective of the goodguys & bloody rubbish Bill syle. It's good to get down with the criminal minds & characters of these 60's 70's shows. All focus on fancy camera work now without the characters, intrigue or storylines. How standards have deteriated.
I think it was the 1st episode & the 1st generic. According to me, it's the best serie cult TV history!... followed by the Champions, the Avengers & Department S.
i don't understand why the show was called the persuaders. whom did the guys persuade? they caught, foiled, exposed, and bludgeoned people, but i don't recall their persuading anyone of anything, per se.
maybe the guys themselves were persuaded by the persuaders, whom we never saw, except as represented by the judge; an organization that recruits at-loose-ends types to do good in the world. maybe we'd have seen them if the show had lasted longer.
I am having a wonderful day.The Persuaders,Belle and Sebastian,The High Chapparal,The White Horses etc etc.Even The Flashing Blade. All great programmes at a great time in my life.FANTASTIC
Never really saw the show but always that the brilliant theme tune. Your opening clip just helped me decide on whether or not I should buy the DVD box set! Buy! Buy! Buy!
Is it true that they aimed at the US market (that would explain Curtis) but it flopped and was beaten by e.g. Mission Impossible? Find it hard to believe, the MI tv-sequel can't compete with the Persuaders in any aspect.
I loved this show as a kid, especially the intro part with the gourgous music where the characters are presented, and did many futile efforts to record it with a casette-recorder in front of the TV. The introduction shows with the car race etc was very nice and the humorous and teasing relation between the two. But when watching it today there isnt much suspense left, music holds up better than the show.
I have to disagree. I think the suspense is there for sure. Certainly it's not going to be as hair raising as something you'd see designed for that. But remember, this was a lighthearted buddy drama.
And I think there are still enough twists to make the endings a bit different that you'd expect them to turn out.
For me it has an emotional attachment. Due to circumstances I was living in Norway in 1971 at the age of 11 and at the time not only was television in Norway in Norwegian but television was only on for approx. 5 hours per day. Oh the Horror!
But on Thursday nights; salvation!
They ran:
1. Gunsmoke
2. Alias Smith & Jones
3. The Persuaders
I loved the show and the theme music gave me chills; and still does!
Oh sure. It's often the case that restrictions create deep appreciation. I've been lucky to have those times. It's like the characters on MASH. They became so close to each other and so appreciative of anything cultural, even 6 month old newspapers, that during normal times, they wouldn't even notice. In our lives, we have so much to choose from we often miss the good, subtle stuff. It's ironic that the countless choices we have now on TV, give us mostly crap.
I used to love watching The persuaders when I was very young. I think the theme tune was really catchy and I liked the way it introduced the background of the characters at the syart. I also developed a huge crush on Danny Wilde too. Your'e right, they don't make them like this any more!
I think the "echo" they refer to is in the audio dialogue, it sound a bit weird when they talk, maybe it happened when youtube compress the file. But the picture quality is very, very good!!
Thanks for sharing, humbleradio, The Persuaders is a great tv-series!!
Yeah, I hear what you're talking about. It's audio compression going from Quicktime codec to Flash (which is what Youtube uses). Hard to remove it w/out huge file size increase. Once the music starts, it's not as noticable. And the main part of the clip is the title sequence. I only left in the pre title since it introduced the series.
If you click a 'related' Persuaders opening clip on the right, you'll quickly see and hear how much fuller the sound is here. I tried hard to keep as much quality in the clip as I could, since the sound was a very important aspect of it.
Hello there...I actually owe the three box set of the Persuaders which contains all of the episodes...you can go to any bookstores where they sell videos and cds like Barnes& Noble or Borders Books & Music if you reside in the US....If you're thinking of getting them go for it it's worth the money...Good Luck and let me know if you get them
Good comparison. The locales play an important part. Also the tone of both - danger with a spice of humour or vice versa makes it a joy to watch. With lovely, smart, dangerous women, the vivid colors, the fashion style, and the politeness of strangers, and you've got a world that most long for. Keep supporting these kinds of prods and Hollywood may stop serving up garbage. Let the sick folks have the torture flicks where audiences laugh at dismemberment. I'll take the positive road anyday.
not sure if you have ever uploaded clips to youtube, but if not you've gotta realize these are compressed files. you can't fit full quality (or even 1/4 quality) onto youtube's 100mb limit. The original clip was over 1gig!
Not sure, but I can't hear the echoiness you describe. Where? In the music? or the dialogue? Or all? I reviewed the DVD source, sounds very close, with of course the expected quality loss. But in terms of fidelitiy, I don't hear any 'echo' that isn't there on the DVD. BTW, the music is intended to have a certain echo tonal quality. Perhaps you are referring to that?
Absolutely great music! Check also other John Barry film music: the James Bond theme as you know it, music for more than half of the Bond movies, music for Dances with wolves (with an Oscar), etc.
My favorites of his are of course the great Jame Bond themes, Out of Africa, Somewhere in Time, Body Heat, Follow Me (The Public Eye), Walkabout, Midnight Cowboy, Born Free, Ipcress File, The Knack, Seance on a Wet Afternoon.
This is the best tune i ever heard. It's been in my head for years and i didn't know the composer. Just last year i found out and bought the cd (this one the first track) with some other excellent john Barry compositions.
John Barry is one of the most underestimated little known, never talked about musicians in our modern age. One of my favorites of his is the theme to the film, The Public Eye (also known as Follow Me). An excellent film with a hauntingly beautiful score.
Superb series! Available on DVD but a bit expensive. There is a new edition with commentaries from Roger Moore, Tony Curtis and the producers etc. Also interviews and extras.
It wasn't unusual for ABC to bail on a TV show when the ratings go down, which I think it did during the middle of the second season. Also, wasn't Moore getting ready to do Bond at the time? His limited availability might have also been a factor. Shame.
Utter Fantastic. I'm a avid fan of film / television titles and this rates the best tv by miles. As you said sums up the whole characters even if you don't know the program. John Barry music suits it so well.

I love the Persuaders, It really captures that groovy late 60's/ early 70's kinda period. Very similar to the Italian Job from 1969.

Great catch! Was that a new product, or used?

Good comparison. The locales play an important part. Also the tone of both - danger with a spice of humour or vice versa makes it a joy to watch. With lovely, smart, dangerous women, the vivid colors, the fashion style, and the politeness of strangers, and you've got a world that most long for. Keep supporting these kinds of prods and Hollywood may stop serving up garbage. Let the sick folks have the torture flicks where audiences laugh at dismemberment. I'll take the positive road anyday.

Perfect picture quality, but why's the sound a bit echo-y? Could it be polished?
nikteacher 4 years ago
not sure if you have ever uploaded clips to youtube, but if not you've gotta realize these are compressed files. you can't fit full quality (or even 1/4 quality) onto youtube's 100mb limit. The original clip was over 1gig!
humbleradio 4 years ago
Point taken. I never said "YOU MUST POLISH IT", I just asked if you COULD. It's still an excellent clip.

lol! MUST!!

Perhaps you are referring to that?
humbleradio 4 years ago
No, I thought the music was exactly as I remember it.

So, I'm not sure where the echo is you are describing.

I'm curious! When it's that good, it's really a pity this film/music is not available on dvd/cd, couldn't trace it anyway...

Superb series! Available on DVD but a bit expensive. There is a new edition with commentaries from Roger Moore, Tony Curtis and the producers etc. Also interviews and extras.

I bought a boxed DVD collection of the Persuaders and it was dirt cheap, like 3 dvds for $20

This show was brilliant. Has this series been made available in DVD? If so, how do I get my hands on it?
Thanks,
Andy

Some episodes are available on DVD in Japan. That would be region 2 Asia. I'm not sure if it's available in other regions. But I think it must be.

Thank you.

Agree 100% John Barry's Opening Theme is one of the best tunes ever, not only on TV but on music in general.

This show was broadcast on Wednesday or Thursday night, followed by Rod Serling's Night Gallery ... don't think I missed an episode of either.
Night Gallery was a bit dodgy at times, but The Persuaders was hilariously funny. Why did it last only two seasons?

It wasn't unusual for ABC to bail on a TV show when the ratings go down, which I think it did during the middle of the second season. Also, wasn't Moore getting ready to do Bond at the time? His limited availability might have also been a factor. Shame.

Absolutely bloody brilliant! Thanks a lot for this.

Utter Fantastic. I'm a avid fan of film / television titles and this rates the best tv by miles. As you said sums up the whole characters even if you don't know the program. John Barry music suits it so well.
Cheers for this
