I saw Joe performing live 14 times starting with the Night and day tour at the Hammersmith London in 1982, he never disappointed me, and every tour was a treat. I'm sorry I missed the Jumpin Jive tour, though!
This song came out the same year my parents got divorced and I was 8. 19 sounded really old to me, haha! My mom played this album over and over during this time, it really brings me back. Unfortunately it wasn't a happy time.
I really love this song by Joe Jackson. I feel like I'm 19 in spirt. Nineteen was a very good year for me. Congratulations to Joe Jackson and Vinnie Zummo for their performances on this song "Nineteen Forever" on The David Letterman Show!! Great lyrics, song and video. Thank you for posting this video!! 5 stars!!
Ah man, I was watching this night. This song was so awesome, it was just this big huge production that happened to be very catchy and likeable. I still love it.
The very best artists always seem to bring their very best when they play with Paul Shaffer's band on Letterman. If they ever put out a DVD collection of the best musical performances on that show it will be something special indeed.
There is also another amazing song in 'Blaze of glory':Sentimental thing. My father says it's based on Byzantine psalmody,I just wonder how Joe can use so much kinds of music.
Is that Grahm doing backing vocals, not playing bass? I saw this band at the Lonestar Roadhouse in NYC with about 200 other people, playing this live for the first time. Probably the greatest show I've ever seen. Full horn section, Joe wearing an Elvis costume with a steelwool wig during this song. Memories are fading.
Agree 100%! Saw Joe and the full 13-piece band in 1989 at the Chicago Theater where they played the full "Blaze of Glory" album from start to finish. Amazing and possibly best show I've ever seen.
Saw the same show at Theatre Saint-Denis in Montreal part of the Montreal Jazz Festival (Blaze Glory Tour). This time with a full orchestra. Excellent! It showed is interest in musical arrangement. This musician is one of the good one. I also love his strange sense of humour. He always says what he thinks.
Joe Jackson is perfectly capable of singing a falsetto. The only reason this sounds odd is because the engineer has mixed him too loud on the bridge, probably because they didn't know in advance that he is merely part of the harmony there.
I think I'm being mis-understood, I know he's perfectly capable, I just love hearing him do it. I felt the same when I saw him in '94 and he got someone else to sing the 'woohoo's' in Real Men. :) Great talking about Joe though
Great tune, great musician. Wonder if Dave caught that dig behind his back at 5:04?

Love this song. The older I get, the more true and ironically poignant.

I was not expecting such a faithful performance from a late-night show. Soaring melody, huge harmony, great instrumentation... Just, wow.

@dwsabianguy the herculean efforts of this ensemble truly do this song justice....

Sentimental Thing is a fantastic song. As I recall Vinny Zumo and Tom Teeley both played guitar on the album and the '89 tour.

I remember seeing this show back then and wondering who's the guy playing the guitar that sounds like a sitar. Haven't seen him since.

Love all the clothes on the band and singers. What a horrible era for fashion the 80's were.

He's singing lower through most of this but does a nice job on the bridge.
Blaze of Glory is an OUTSTANDING album. "Me and You," "Evil Empire," etc....just brilliant. Thanks for posting!

RE RE: mano
I don't think he's singing the falsetto on this part on the album either...
Awesome album, BTW. A real shame such inspiration has to be so obscure. Blaze of Glory lives up to it's name.

Ha! I turned 19 on the day this song entered the charts. I hope, just like hymie8, that the actual video will soon be available on YouTube!
