When i bought it, it was version 3.0 :$

Now its got a Tetherd Jailbroken 5.0.1 version

And i've downloaded "Speedintensifier" to make my device even faster then iPhone 4/4s (one of them) xD

Now i'm happy with it :)

the 4s is much better than 3gs !

4s : better camera , better processor , siri , more GB , better screen , 2 cameras ,etc... you can also play games without lagg (you cant play some games on the 3gs !!)

..so dont get the 3gs ..trust me ! 3gs isnt bad .. but its ''outdated'' :)

I also saw a benchmark test on gaming 3D performance and the 3gs beat the iphone 4 in that test too. Whatever way you want to spin it, the 3Gs is faster. This was with a benchmarking program. put this in google and you will get the page with benchmarks of different handsets

Yeah, iPhone 4 has cydia here which means jailbreak. But still these tests are very easy to predict, 4s is of course fastest. And it is twice as fast as the 4, it's just that it doesn't show when you open simple and light apps such as safari.

the 4s is deffintally faster. but the 3gs is still one hell of a phone. my dad was using a 32 gig 3gs for a year and upgraded to the 32 gig 4s and said that he cant really notice any speed improvement. BUT the camera is not the best on the 3gs sadly. thats mainly its biggest fallback. and battery life.
