  • this sounds like your version of the stone roses song tears. Very clever

  • This reminds me of the Stone Roses song Tears

  • Maybe u should use a chord progression called BAGDAD.

  • Maybe, but before getting into that, I need to make sure I have a plan for how to get out of it again...

  • @danielearwicker I was just kidding man, BAGDAD as in Baghdad the city xD besides im sure u get ur recommendations from better places than youtube.

  • @Eltroim... yes, I got it... sigh. I was trying to continue the joke with a reference to the continuing insurgency problems after the invasion. But I guess it was just a BADGAG...

  • nice one. and how could one have not see that coming?

  • @danielearwicker no it wasn't! xD

  • @danielearwicker nice wit

  • like it mate, love the sound of your guitar what effect you using

  • Toasters rule on a Rick12...great lowend tuning with touch of flange.

  • so so nice daniel! what effect are you using here?

  • what is the song called on iTunes?

  • Search for 'primrose league' to find the podcast. This became the song 'Hammer'.

  • pretty good. very johnny marr!

  • DANIEL

this song is amazing. EVERYONE purchase it

    off your digital site thing..

    its called hammer..

I've been listening to it the car a lot here in sunny san diego haha

    a quick question-

do you record your bass direct? how did you get that magnificant punchy sound?

  • Sounds a bit like Until The Day Is Done by R.E.M. except electric.

  • you think?

    I got Daytripper personally

  • Sounds very Beatlish. And thats a high compliment.

  • ahhh! cant stop listening to it! so much potential!

  • !! such a sick riff! so i was obliged to visit your myspace to hear your song "hammer." ...man. you underused the riff! gah! i wish we could jam my friend. i imagine so much more for itt! you're still the man -- sick guitar :]

  • like it

  • You should cover the main rhythm part that johnny plays in ''Missed the boat'' by Modest Mouse

  • Upload hammer man!!

  • This riff keeps getting stuck in my head. You need to use it in a song!

  • Already have - the song is called Hammer but has no video. It's on my indiestore though.

  • Are Ricks good guitars for practicing on? Like working on finger techniques and riffs? Does the varnish cause a problem?

  • The point is you made it sound good, without dipping into the stock celtic music grab-bag.

  • Thank you. Yep, it is DADGAD. I think people must regularly discover it for themselves when they're planning to tune a guitar to open D and they notice that it sounds good if you leave the 3rd string alone, which is a very economical idea for a 12-string player because that top G is the one that always breaks when you tune it back up. That's how I first found it anyway.

  • Same here. btw Very Nice riff, i really like the Rick. At first i thought it was a 6-string.

  • Yeah, DADGAD is a great tuning.... used a bit by one of favourites Chris Whitley. He also used DADADE quite a bit. Have you ever tried that one ? Wouldn't recommend it for the 12-string since it means tuing up the G.

  • Oh ... I thought Open G was DGDGBD

  • well you could tune to C-G-C-G-C-D and capo the 2nd fret

  • very cool, open Dsus4 tuning. good original idea!!

  • (Or, dadgad)

  • have you got a band?

  • GREATTTT!

  • it reminds me of bagpipes

  • That's a very good observation. As it's an open tuning, I'm letting the bottom notes ring out continuously like a "drone", like in music made with pipes or the hurdy gurdy.

  • it's almost like you took bert jansch and gave him a ric haha

  • DADGAD?

  • excellent

  • very cool riff! I think that's how Johnny Marr should have sounded after the Smiths.

  • I just downloaded and installed iTunes... just to get your songs! --- Thanks.

  • Would sound fantastic with some dense harmonies.

  • Check out the Primrose League podcast on iTunes for the full song built around this riff.

  • hi, curios to listen to the entire song, what's the name?

  • It's called 'Hammer', if you go to the primroseleague homepage there's a link to where you can stream it for free or buy the download for the bargain price of 79p.

  • great riff

has a sound of black diamond by the groundhogs about it

  • Also wanted to add, I kinda liked that you put this out before the complete song, was neat to see what you did with it.

  • Ahh! Just noticed that over the weekend you put out the full track (Hammer) to this riff on the podcast, GREAT stuff! I like the accompanying guitar with the riff. I've given it a few spins and I think it's maybe the best you've done yet. I REALLY like the third guitar that pops in and out at :55 and 2:01, awesome.

  • I like it, mate.

  • good stuff, i like your original works, and i'm looking forward to a finished product.

  • Very kind comments, if only I'd earned them. I was planning to spend today turning it into a finished song but I just sat around on my arse instead! Maybe tomorrow evening I'll get something done.

  • great! i like the sound a lot on this one. is there a chorus on it, and a compressor?!

  • It's one of the guitar patches on the Roland built-in effects, which I tweak by switching off the delay and turning down the chorus. I think it basically has extremely heavy compression, but there's still some slight (very slow) chorus in there.

  • reminds me of john fahey, just a little

  • nice, much different than anything else i've ever heard from you!

  • it's a privellege to watch you grow as a guitarist.
